Yeah I've got 6 months of it and it definitely seems like the worst out of the big streaming things. I've tried a few things now and they've all been pretty shit. Nice picture quality though.

It is the best for that. All I would really want out of it is like an Apple Music sub for movies. I would happily chuck a tenner a month at a nowtv-esque Apple Movie sub with older releases.

I was halfway through the final episode of Ted Lasso when my sub expired

You missed the death scene then. Probably for the best, it was a bit emotional. RIP, Ted. :-(

It feels a bit like a subscription service that exists because they felt they had to have one rather than because they actually wanted it. It was definitely a thing they needed to make Apple One make sense. That I'm teetering on the brink suggests they're onto something. They just need critical mass on their content, just as Netflix eventually achieved. Pronbably need to acquire a studio or two for the back catalogues, too, which is surely on the cards.

My 6 months has come to an end too. Will not be resubbing, although my wife got 3 free months with her new phone. Will wait before reactivating.

It feels a bit like a subscription service that exists because they felt they had to have one rather than because they actually wanted it. That describes the vast majority of subscription services (yeah definitely including Apple). The only ones that actually seem to justify their own existence (in the UK) are Netflix, Prime, and Disney+ after they added Stars. Every single other one (ignoring specialist services, but even some of those are questionable) is solely a vanity or desperate and ill-guided profit-grubbing measure. Apple TV falls solidly into the vanity category - it does have a bunch of good (some mediocre), well-made shows on it, but you could probably watch all of them end-to-end in under 3 months, and given they like to give out 3 and 6 month trials... Honestly the best thing about Apple TV is the picture quality/lack of compression artifacts/banding. I dunno what they're doing differently except it definitely uses more data than any other streaming service, so I guess they're just compression less. I fucking wish Prime and Netflix would have an option to do the same. Amazing how many 4K shows can end up looking a bit crap just because of compression even when it's not a bandwidth/WiFi issue.

Still not tried Netflix 4K due to the price premium feeling a bit cheeky when every other provider gives it as part of the standard package. It is already the priciest package for standard quality without the premium.
As for Apple TV I would have ignored it but got the PS5 6 months free so started it up last week. Almost missed it as I unchecked the app on PS5 on I initial setup due to generally avoiding Apple stuff but the wife spotted an ad for it somewhere. Only watched a few nature documentaries on it (and the wife some Snoopy films) but they did stream very nicely.

It is already the priciest package for standard quality without the premium. Not in the UK it isn't. NowTV is 720p for £9.99, and an extra £5.99/month if you want 1080p. 4K isn't even available as an option, probably because Sky/NowTV are just profoundly bad at streaming tech (seriously, NowTV on PC relies on a separate client which uses Silverlight, something Microsoft basically abandoned about a decade ago, and it's other clients just don't work on a lot of machines).

Fair point, I ignored NowTV and it's combination of low-res, split TV and Films and ever increasing prices. Haven't used a subscription with them for a long time ... Netflix are still in a similar category with its 3 tier system though, 4K, 1080P and mystery low res option. Would be tempted to try a month of 4k Netflix to see what it is like in January with a bunch of stuff to binge but wouldn't pay it regularly. Especially as I have heard it has the worst (nonSKY/Now) streaming quality too.

Especially as I have heard it has the worst (nonSKY/Now) streaming quality too. Yeah Netflix's pricing is definitely excessive in terms of what you get at this point. They seem to think they've got a captive audience and can just ratchet up the price (as an aside, I was able to see this in fascinating detail by searching my email for Netflix bill-increase emails a while back, which lead to me cancelling them). And yes, they are, in my experience, noticeably the worst quality because they use some kind of hardcore compression algorithm, which looks kinda okay at 1080p, albeit there's excessive banding, especially in dark scenes (even with HDR), and I thought looked okay at 4K until I got Apple TV, and went from watching an episode of Mythic Quest in 4K to some Netflix show (I forget what, but it was recent and 4K), and it was like "What the fuck is this? Is this even in 4K? Is my TV broken?". Sadly the TV was fine, and it was in 4K. Prime is not much better quality-wise, and has worse shows, but it's £7.99 for a ton of random-ass benefits (obviously Amazon stuff delivered faster and usually free, but also weird shit like Deliveroo delivery being free over £25 if you hook up that to it) and includes 4K and doesn't seem to try to give me shit about "too many screens" (which Netflix has before). Also Prime sometimes has some fantastically random weird shit, like a documentary on the World of Darkness pen and paper RPGs (I will report back if it's any good) which were huge in the 1990s. As noted I cancelled Netflix a couple of months ago because of the price (but someone else in the house has it now - albeit the lowest quality - which seems to be 720p).

We have just got the video only Prime so only £5.99 a month. Didn't know about the WoD documentary, might have to look it up. My wife got annoyed with Netflix's last price increase and instead dropped to the lowest tier but we have. 4K OLED now so it likely looks a lot worse than in my old plasma.

Now TV take the piss with stream quality ( inc sound) and their basic tier now has adverts, but they do have some great series, Succession, Mare of Easton, The Wire is pretty much always on there. I’d cancel it otherwise

I’d cancel it otherwise Their basic 720P tier (I just grabbed a few months on a deal) looks a lot better than Netflix's lowest tier (Basic) on my 4K OLED.

I'm watching this "Long Way Up" thing, and it's just "Range Anxiety — The Series". But the HDR is very nice.

Yeah the newest one isn’t a patch on the first two but it has a charm of its own. The first two are up there as well, if you haven’t watched them already. Bit old now, but still entertaining.

When they outlined the concept of a pure electrified trip up South America in episode 1, I was pretty sure it couldn't be done. Then they casually explained they'd got a company to install a load of dedicated charge points on their route! Even after that they still needed to cheat several times. As a result I don't think it makes the point about electric bikes that they wanted it to make but I'm sure they all had fun. As you say, nice HDR.

I've watched three episodes of Foundation so far. I quite like it, usually I start surfing on the tablet after a few minutes (yeah I know it's a bad habit), but this has managed to captivate me so far.
Looking forward to Severance (employees agree to have their memories separated between work and personal) and Suspicion (four people that don't know each other are accused of a kidnapping, but claim they are innocent).

Possibly because it's not done for the entire episode, but only for the flashback parts (so 50-75% of the episode).

Finished season 2 of The Morning Show, definitely picked up as it got going and with the later plot points it's developing the story in some interesting ways.
Now watched all current episodes of The Afterparty it's not great, but easy viewing and there are some good performances in there.
But, Ted Lasso...what a show, only just started last night and we're four episodes in. Such a great show, it has so much heart and that's what makes it so enjoyable to watch. Ted is firmly in the same kind of camp as Leslie Knope (Parks & Recs) as in that character should be (and often is) annoying, but you still love them and root hard for them. The supporting cast is great, with welcome surprises like Keeley being such an endearing sweetheart, it's really hard to not to watch this show with a big old grin on your face.
