Extraordinarily good game. The "Wintermute" campaign is one of the best examples of engrossing game narrative I've ever come across, and the survival mode is incredibly flexible from "out for a stroll" to "you're going to die right now". Coupled with a unique art style and awesome soundtrack, this is probably my favourite survival game. Even better news is that Episode 4 of the Wintermute campaign is on the way - www.thelongdark.com/news/dev-diary-september-2021/

I’ve had hours of enjoyment in just the straight survival mode and I’ve still only tried the first map.
Edit: playing on Switch

I was playing it when it was first in early access and the survival was very engrossing but I got annoyed by the unrealistic wildlife. I started the campaign maybe six months ago but couldn't be bothered finishing. Maybe I'll try again.

As the weather starts to turn ill get back into my my campaign playthrough. Just can't face playing if from April - October, just feels wrong.
Great game though, and surprisingly chilled given you can pretty much set the pace.

I’ve been dipping in and out of this one for years now. Back into it, juggling a campaign play through and a survival run. Just finished the first part of the challenge mode where you are constantly stalked by the big bear. So tough but when you know where you are going and you have ample flairs, it’s fairly easy.
Started my survival run on the Stalker setting and it dropped me right in a storm about a few hours from daylight! Had no clue where I was. Managed to find a cabin on the river and survive. If that was my first foray into the game I would of been massively intimidated!
My goal in survival mode is to become a hardened grizzly survivor who can survive easily in that little house by the lake in Timberwolf Mountain. Currently using the garage in Coastal Highway as my home. Gonna stock up and train etc. hopefully find a damn rifle soon. It wasn’t in the usual hut between the two cabins this time. Gonna have to read up to find any other places it may be

I need to play this, got it as part of a bundle years ago (I think) but not actually started it. Is the campaign the best starting mode?

In many ways its like a very extended tutorial for survival mode. I played the story mode extensively and loved it, have more recently graduated to survival too. Both are great in their own way. I like the goals and directed progression in story, but the survival is really engrossing.

I had this when it was just a sandbox, my personal opinion would be for you to start in survival - for me it’s best part of the game by far. You can learn as you go

Had a moment in a cave and got extremely lucky. I ventured pretty far out from the mountain hut in Timberwolf mountain when a shitty blizzard came and I was very exhausted and stumbled into a cave system. It was late so I was going to bring out my bedroll and settle in for the night when to my horror there wasn’t one in my inventory! I remembered I left it all the way in pleasant valley. I came very ill prepared - I didn’t think I’d venture out too far but I ended up doing so, so I left a lot of things like a lantern too. Luckily I had half a torch so I thought I’d better take a look around the cave. I made it all the way near the end of it and miraculously stumbled onto a bedroll! It was accompanied by a flare and a dead body. Couldn’t believe it. Saved my life, at this point I’m about 70 days into a stalker play through. I think in this little expedition I accidentally walked around Ash Canyon without knowing (I was checking the Timberwolf map in sheer confusion) it was only when I found the cave I came out of where it said ‘leaving ash canyon’. There’s nothing there is there?! Currently living a life of luxury in the hut, I have an ungodly amount of meat from various animals I leave outside the hut (unfortunately, the ai of wolves isn’t great - they leave it alone when irl, that would of all been hobbled up!) for conservation purposes, copious amounts of water and a great selection of clothing. Recently had another venture out for some containers and guess what? Forgot the ruddy hacksaw! Had to trek all the way back home with nothing. I passed about 4 containers

The cold definitely seems to be affecting your memory
I finished episode 4 of Wintermute the other day, but I'm a Survival player at heart. I considered starting up a survival game but decided to leave it for another while. I tend to make it to Coastal Highway and then hunker down; I should really explore the new maps - I used to play at a time when Desolation Point was the farthest you could go, though I vaguely remember being on Timberwolf Mountain as well. And I've seen the Wintermute locations like Forlorn Muskeg etc.
I was shocked last year when I discovered Fluffy was dead.

Where do you base in Highway, Jackrabbit island?

Yes, exactly.
And I don't intend to hunker down; it's just that with all that wolf meat freezing outside, I lose impetus. I really need to take on the Grizzly or set some other goal.

I tend to end up in the same place for the same reason. I have all I need, why leave?

Every time I settle in coastal highway it’s always the garage. Lots of space, lots to hunt and enough wood to keep you going for months

I think this is why on balance I still prefer Wintermute. Without the forced objectives of the story I just tend to find somewhere safe to hunker down and then lose any sense of purpose. Just bad at choosing my own adventure I guess.

I keep meaning to do one of the survivial challenge modes like the one where the bear follows you but never get brave enough. I've played over 100 hours but my aim is terrible. Never yet successfully shot and killed a deer with the rifle.

I might start a run next week, try for three days on each map, once you enter a map you have to stay for three days, something like that.

I was noodling about a few weeks ago, doing the three days on each map thing referenced above, and I decided to try Interloper difficulty.
It's not that bad! Well, I died a little bit at the start (on Timberwolf Mountain, which I'm not familiar with) but then spawned in Pleasant Valley and it was pretty staightforward to last a few days and make it as far as the dam on Mystery Lake. I was surprised! I still haven't found a bedroll, so I went Farmstead -> Signal Tower -> Prefab huts outside the dam to sleep.
Then I went away for more than a week so I lost impetus. Tried it again yesterday and managed the same (again starting in Pleasant Valley).
I was probably pretty lucky with animals not noticing me, though I find them far more aggressive in Wintermute than in the base game.
But I guess the next thing is whether I want to commit to this playthrough - next step is grab a bunch of stuff from the Ravine, and then off to craft a load of weapons at Forlorn Muskeg. Bit of a big undertaking, really.

Oooo, they just added the Blackrock region to Survival Mode. Accessible from Pleasant Valley and Timberwolf Mountain.
Also some extensive patch notes on introducing modding in the new year, and splitting the Survival and Story modes into two separate entities to make Survival easier to maintain (ie so it doesn't break story mode with every update).
Some paid content coming along after the modding update. I think my modding days are over but it will be interesting to see what people do. Hopefully it's more substantial than just adding items or whatever.

They're asking for nominations in the "Labour of love" category of the Steam awards. I gave them mine at least.

Been away from my run for a couple of weeks now but I think I’ll jump back in to see this new region! Also liking the fact I can repair my crampons
As for interloper, I think I tried to survive just one full day to get the achievement and barely got through!

It's pretty amazing that they haven't had to ask for any money since 2014 or whatever. I guess that is changing now with paid DLC being hinted at; happy to pay more at this point.

I've got 45 hours on Steam on this but I think that was about 4 years ago. I enjoyed my time but the survival elements just took too long so if there are ways of reducing that down to enjoy the story more then I'm in, again, after Skyrim.....

Paid expansion due to arrive on Steam/Epic Store in December (Jan for consoles). Looks like this will be a lifetime game for Hinterland.
