There's revisionism among younger punk kids that Lavigne, Busted and McFly were actually gateway pop punk.
This, somehow, has led to McFly and Busted appearing at proper festivals.
The Avril thing is a fucking weird offshoot of this nonsense.

Honestly it's fucking mad. Nobody liked any of those, who wasn't a tween girl. It's why Fightstar got so much shit when they tried to go big.
I caught the Avril thing on a video from an old punk dude looking at revisionism. A lot of it seems to be people Bill Eilish's age who didn't really get to be around back then.
But anyway - Avril Lavigne very much not dead but did marry the singer of Sum 41 for a bit before dumping him for the Nickleback singer.

I just saw an article about it and they said the rumour started in 2011 but I’m sure I remember some version of it right back when Avril was popular the first time around in the early 00s.
I’d also buy that she was a gateway to stuff like Good Charlotte and then Blink and Green Day for plenty of people. Less so McFly and Busted though.
When I had a shitty job flyering and stuff for venues around town I also had to help chaperone meet & greets. No one was better with the venue staff or fans than Fightstar. They had all the time in the world for everyone there. I think the only person I’ve seen come close is Frank Turner, even in his cokehead days. Yellowcard were the worst. They made no attempt to hide that they’d rather be doing anything else other than meeting their fans.

An old school friend of mine was in a terrible band of the Busted / McFly ilk called Freefaller in the early 00s, their single got to #8 in the charts and they were on TOTP. I really, really hated that whole scene so much.
