My first PC was a friend's old 386SX25 gutted base unit so I had to get my own RAM, monitor, soundcard and HDD. I targeted Doom specwise so had a whopping 4MB RAM and a 320MB HDD (nearly wrote GB there...). I think my next leap was a 486DX266. Ultima Underworld and VII were other target games.
I remember the 'fun' of trying to get an autoexec for Ultima VII that would allow both voices/sound effects and a mouse. Then later we had CDROM drives eating our valuable base memory...
I still have the crappy Trust analogue stereo speakers from that 386, I should probably get a new pair as they are a bit flakey these days.

My 286 didn't even have a turbo button.

"Ted Waitt's ancestor was an enterprising individual who would round up these cattle before they could drown and sold them to the meatpacking plants once rescued."
They're using the term "rescued" quite loosely

If you get rid you better erect a shrine to prevent them haunting you I did temporarily use a pair of speakers I got with my PC in Korea after returning back again having abandoned the Trust ones in the UK originally. Within a few months they did mysteriously die this going back to the Trust ones so you could be right...

I had cheapo, mega budget freebie speakers for a while until i was given various sets of Altec Lansing Speakers that were replaced when we gave out new PCs. then i somehow managed to get a set of Creative Inspire 5.1 5300 for dirt cheap, like £15-£25 and they lasted until earlier this year. I checked and that's just over 15 years i had them and i'm sure they'd work again if someone with some knowledge cracked open the amp/sub and fixed whatever went pop.
Now rocking some Logitech Z905s i picked up cheap from a colleague who just wanted them out of the house because his wife hated them and the cables everywhere. Result! So yeah, i now have a really nice set of 5.1 speakers arranged on a shelf in front of me because i have no easy way to put the rear speakers behind me.
Sorry if that's set off anyone's OCD.

My creaking rig on a hot day would put a 386 to shame. I like your avatar Merci! There's a small story to that one: I used to have the avatar taht's just from the cover of The Hermit And The Bear. Then, after moving house, a bunch of my friends send me a lot of cards and one of those friends had comissioned an artist to draw a card based on the image. That became this. Needless to say I'm incredibly proud of it

Welcome RPS people. As someone who is more inclined to PC gaming it's nice to have some more of you around. Put your feet up, mind the squabbles.

Flatmate at uni in the days when Pentium was standard had an old 386. We renamed it JONSCRAP386 so that it mocked him every time he booted up and he never figured out how to change it back

At least he's not shoehorning being gay into it. Doesn't even mention it. So that's progress
Does this whole forum have a problem with people being gay or is it just you?

Nah, it's neither. It was a reference to something else that happened on the forum

Anyone intolerant is ridiculed and then booted in very short order. We'll have no trouble here

Welcome RPS people! I've enjoyed reading some PC nostalgia- I haven't been a PC Gamer since about 2003, and I'm an absolute dunce when it comes to building one, but I have a few fond memories from back then.
I was a Spectrum, Atari and Amiga kid, but my introduction to proper PC gaming would have been Carmageddon, late 90s. I spent so many hours just on the free demo level, knew it like the back of my hand. The powerups were genius- nothing beats getting a Solid Granite Car pickup and turning an opponent into one of those car cubes you see at scrapyards.

It's probably telling that the example I picked now sounds a bit, well, console-y. I never knew people who did LAN stuff back then so I don't have the same fondness for Quake or Unreal or owt like that. C&C was also great though.

well here's me, not even having introduced myself properly! Well, I'm Grizzly. Have been an RPS communinity regular for a while, an RPS forum moderator for a shorter while, and now I am one of the admins of the RPS community discord. I also like forums a whole lot, and it's good to see one that's bustling and rather active. At middle school people ocasionally talked about how I was a bear for various reasons (apperently I'm big and huggable), and I just sorta rolled with it. Only later I found out that bears also referred to something else entirely... and that turned out to be somewhat true in hindsight as well.

Glad you made it over grizzly, I hope everyone that makes it over from RPS gets something out of this place. we're a good crowd generally, there’s a few characters that might take some getting used to, like anywhere else

Welcome Grizzly, great to have some of the RPS crowd here!
As for our "characters" I've noticed we have a block member function which may come in handy! That said the vast majority are a great bunch (maybe a little cynical) so hope you all make yourself at home.

My 286 didn't even have a turbo button. Ah, Turbo buttons Graduated from an Amiga and built my first PC a 286 (no idea what it cost) and from there built all my PC's up to Pentium 4ish Nowadays I could not be arsed to build a system, both my PC's are prebuilt (PC Specialist), but I still have high memory, DOS, boot disk shit ingrained in my DNA

I think my first family pc (that I eventually took over and started tinkering with' was a Tiny Pentium 2 350, with 128mb ram and a 4mb i740 gfx card from Intel. It was only as I was getting upto speed pc wise that I noticed that the Pentium 3 was released 2 weeks later after we bought our pc and obviously we were charged full price for a product that Tiny would have definitely known was at the end of its shelf life. Wankers.

Things do get a bit feisty sometimes but only if someone is being an idiot. Tends to be racists, homophobes and other various twats that feel the collected ire of the forum
