Another refugee checking in. This place looks very retro. I see some people are taking the opportunity to reinvent themselves avatar-wise, but I'm just going to stick to the same old Hunter. See you around!

Pleasure to have you here. The old EG forum was pretty retro, believe it or not this place as a quantum leap in some ways, like a working search function and links to first unread post. I only saw the RPS forum for the first time this week and we were definitely the poor relation in terms of Reedpop communities

Also they lack of moderation at the old place caused a lot of the trouble. Racists and homophobes were left for quite a while without being banned which meant the forum users got dragged into fighting with them. They will be banned pretty much instantly here so there should be a lot fewer issues.

Hello everyone, another RPS castaway checking in.
I don't remember the make of my first PC but it somehow found it's way to my young self after being thrown out of the Volvo invoice department in the late 80s. It had two 5¼-inch floppy drives, an orange monocrome screen and a cool 20MB hard drive. I felt like a true cyber hacker as I learned DOS and played way too much of some packman knockoff in its orange glow. I think the case must have been made of cast iron because it was so heavy I ended up just leaving it behind at some point when moving flats.
Afraid you can count me out on that front. Stage 4 pancreatic cancer, got less than a year. I'll upload my usual avatar when my chemo wears off enough to let me get up and use my pc. I had no idea. I don't have anything eloquent to say other than that's terrible and I'm so sorry it happened to you.

Hi there. I'm an institutionalised RPS guy popping in to say hi, nice to meet you all, and thanks for the invite to join you here.
My videogame hardware lineage goes BBC micro, Atari XE, Amiga 500, 286 and onwards, with the odd jump into the console pool here and there. I'm not sure whether I can look back at the auto exec.bat and config.sys REM/IRQ-dance with much fond nostalgia, but it was certainly a rite of passage for the time. You really earned those chiptunes.
Anyway, thanks again for having us.

Check in from another RPS-er.
My hardware history went from the 48k ZX Spectrum to the 128k, then to a horrid beige box that could barely run anything more advanced than a screensaver, then through a series of HP and Acer towers until now, where I am on the first machine that I built myself, this year, after participating in "The Great Nine Month Wait For A 3000 Series GPU Even Though I Bought It On Launch Day".

Might have to start a Speccy thread, we had some quality retro game reminiscing in the dying days of the EG forum

Might have to start a Speccy thread, we had some quality retro game reminiscing in the dying days of the EG forum For a long time, I would have said that the theme from Magicland Dizzy was the best music that was ever produced on the Spectrum, but I have had to seriously reconsider that opinion in light of Cannon Bubble.

Fair light blew my mind when i was young. The music was amazing.

Also they lack of moderation at the old place caused a lot of the trouble. Racists and homophobes were left for quite a while without being banned which meant the forum users got dragged into fighting with them. They will be banned pretty much instantly here so there should be a lot fewer issues. One of the most dissapointing statistics of the ol' RPS Forum was that 80% of its userbase left in 2013, and although no reason is provided with that statistic I have a strong inclination that the lack of moderation at the time didn't really help.
Having later on moderated the place myself I can... see why a lot of people don't bother. Aside from perpetually worrying if I was doing the right thing or not (and I often wasn't, and I wish I had some of the resources that I had later), a lot of people who you need to interact with are definitely the people you don't want to interact with. Part of the reason why I think many people like the discord's athmosphere is that we were on the ball from the get-go. That, and being strongly invested in getting people together to play games (which discord is perfect for), which in my experience actually helps a whole lot.
If you're on the ball now too, I can see this place lasting a very long time.
Also, hi other RPS forum migrants. If you're settling on Font Geek as your new home, I could make an announcement on the #wotishappening channel in discord to try and point some more people your way.

Suppose I should say hi as another RPS-ite.
I don't even remember when I joined the RPS forums, but over the years I've been a moderator (for a bit) on there, but also the absolute sucker who ends up organising pretty much anything. I hosted and ran the Mumble server, famous for our PlanetSide 2 outings as the Giraffes, and when I finally got fed up of paying through the nose for it I initiated the jump to Discord and have worked hard with the others to make the friendliest place we can. I've also been responsible for the annual RPS meetups around Europe for, well, too long, although COVID has ruined the last two years.
Gaming wise I cut my teeth on a BBC Micro with a tape drive. After that it was PC gaming, with the likes of Sim City and Commander Keen, before my first actual purchase of X-Wing (on floppy disks) and a snazzy black and purple joystick from the local Dixons. After that it was a rapid descent, though I've always played on all platforms since acquiring a PlayStation and FF7 of my very own one Christmas time.

We really should get another PS2 revival going (assuming it's not already happening on the discord?)
I have to say the only thing I'm going to find it distressing to lose from the old forum is Sophias* thread. I know there was a front page article that has survived but it didn't quite have the depth of feeling.
*Sophia was a huge part of our Planetside community, in particular a demon Harasser (think dune buggy with a turret,) driver and squad leader witha wicked sense of humour and a fascination with bees. She sadly took her own life in 2015.

It’s a real shame that so much history is getting lost to the ether. We’ve started a few threads here to keep some sort of memorial to key events, it’s impossible to transfer everything but a place to put a few reminders which jog the memory could be worth you RPS folks doing?

You still have time to preserve the threads before you get switched off though. I would definitely recommend doing it as well as there isn't a second chance once it's gone. Stoof beat me to it as I went to make sure your forum was still there

We really should get another PS2 revival going (assuming it's not already happening on the discord?) We've done a few get togethers, the last was when they introduced the carriers, so we hopped on to see what the fuss was about. Didn't lead to any sustained play time though, which is a bit of a shame, but it's clear people have moved on.

Hey folks, another RPS refugee here. I was mostly a lurker over there until the last few years as I was mostly a console gamer but PC gaming has become more dominant lately, while working from home/off work - for some reason it seems wrong to fire up a console at 10am on a Monday morning, whereas with a PC.... well, it's very close to work, innit? For some reason, in my remote corner of Ireland in the 80s, rather than the Speccy or the C64 being big, we were all about the MSX, so it was Konami's Soccer, Metal Gear and Roadfighter. Luckily quite a few western games were ported, so my biggest early gaming influence was probably Knightlore:
After that I didn't play games until the late 2000s, so quite a gap, but coming back to gaming at that point was pretty mind-blowing, so I've stuck with it since. I got into the modding scene a bit with Mount & Blade (was involved with Native Expansion for a few years), and since then I've basically been on the same journey gaming on a whole has been, from triple A to indies and beyond. These days it's mostly sedate stuff like walking simulators (and MS Flight Simulator <3 ) or trying to get into tactics games, so looking forward to adding to the discussion here.
First, I'm away for a couple of weeks, so I'll probably be quiet to start out. Thanks for having us!

Oddly, in England I had a neighbour with an MSX as a kid and after playing the likes of Knightmare (the Konami version, not the TV adaption) and Penguin Adventure I really wanted one to upgrade to from my VIC 20. In hindsight, ending up with a 48K rubber key Spectrum was probably the better option though.

My journey to PC was:
Amstrad CPC 464 – I was like 4 or 5. Main memory was waiting for the cartridge to load. Amiga 500+ – what a console, such an incredible array of games. Packard Bell 486 (50MHz processor, 4MB RAM) – Dad bought it for educational purposes. This was pre-Encarta, but there was some science software bundled in and such. He also made the mistake of buying us Doom II. Supposedly we were terrified playing it, but it kept us shut up, so he thought it couldn't be that bad. Hahaha.
Really though, Quake 2 was where I became absolutely fixated on PC gaming. Played it non-stop on 56k from about 12 years old till I was about 18 or so. Such halcyon days.
Booting up Q2 RTX earlier this year was a real flood of emotion. Amazing how familiar I was with the maps – could still remember the weapon locations and spawn points. Just a shame my skills have fallen through the floor!
