I tried it, but only played about an hour's worth so didn't think I was in a position to really speak on it. But what I played was good. It has a Metroid-ish layout but the story sort of tells you when to backtrack and explore, so I guess it's more Fusion or Other M than Super or Prime.

I can highly recommend The Eternal Castle Remastered. Which it isn't. Remastered that is, though it almost fooled me. It's great. Another person who played this! I loved it, if you like flashback etc it's a must! Very old quote but I have always been curious about this game and had it on wishlist but never taken the plunge (bit has it had a physical release to tempt me more). I may have to get around to getting it some time. Looking back through the whole thread and seeing all the Mega Man talk reminds me that despite owning them on various formats I don't think I have completed a Mega Man game (played some of the Zero and ZX games the most IIRC), might have to dig out my Switch Legacy collections to play some time (I kept meaning to try and go through the different series). Ironically I did play to the final level of Mighty Number Nine and despite its flaws thought it was okay (if not up to the standards of the likes of the Zero games). Should probably finish that off too. I did play through and enjoy the Ori games on Switch and have Blasphemous to play which seemed quite cool from what I played. I unfortunately got Bloodstained on Switch so haven't played it much, tempted to grab a cheap PC key for Steam Deck to be honest where I imagine performance will be a lot better. Monster Boy is another I own but need to get around to playing...

Hope I helped, Uly. Love the art design too, with the city feeling like a blend of Beijing and Midgar.
Maybe I'll go back to it once I finish Blacksad to stay in that anthropomorphic animals vibe.

While we're on the subject, how do you make it twinkle like that? I'm guessing either battery-powered Xmas lights or a special shampoo.

Valfaris has always looked seriously ugly to me Quite the contrary for me. I think it's very beautiful, in an unkempt way.
Unfortunatley, the new one coming next year (Mecha Therion) won't look the same anymore. It also seems it's gonna be more of a sidescrolling shooter than a platformer, which is a bummer.

Almost all the games we've been talking about are in the current Steam sale, many with pretty steep discounts, so it's worth looking up any game you have any interest in. I grabbed:
Blasphemous Salt and Sanctuary Bloodstained Curse of the Moon 2 Chasm Guacamelee Alwa's Awakening & Alwa's Legacy Dogworld Castlevania Anniversary Collection (a collection of the 8- and 16-bit classics)
Hollow Knight, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Bloodstained Ritual of the Night, and all Mega Man games are on sale too.
Earlier today, the first game I finished was Chasm - 6/10. There's so much I could say about it but it'd probably be a waste of time as I simply wouldn't recommend it to anyone. In short, it's metroidvania with a procedurally generated world, gameplay wise it sticks extremely close to SotN although in a more cutesy pixel art style typical for modern indie platformers. While the core mechanics are alright, it's pretty basic, world design feels random and uninspired (as expected), it's very repetitive and samey, and perhaps worst of all for a SotN clone, the soundtrack is dull and there's no atmosphere. You can make a game that's a near copy of a classic, but it better have some things going for it that the original didn't, or you end up with something that's simply a lesser game in every regard and thus has no reason to exist.
It was ok for kind of playing it in the background while listening to music, don't get me wrong it's not terrible, but it just seems to be only halfway there in everything it does. I think this video sums it up greatly, I found it worth watching simply for its discussion of what makes good metroidvania design and how Chasm fails it:
Earlier I tried Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams which is currently free on Prime Gaming. It seems well made but I hate the character switching gameplay, which is unfortunate because that's the core mechanic the game is built around, so I abandoned it after 5 levels or so. Would have stuck around if it had been the punk sister part only.

And of course, so are the Castlevanias.

Horace (switch)
I'm not entirely sure where to begin with this. I am trying to work out if it is/was utterly brilliant or a flawed masterpiece.
First of all negatives....it is too long and became a bit of a slog towards the end.
Some gameplay elements are frustrating however this is rare.
On the positive side, anyone that grew up with games in the 80s 90s will find it hard to not get a nostalgia overload. All handled a lot better than "ready player one" ever did. Its kind of amazing that with pretty much every gaming genre getting a go, that the mechanics are as good as they're. Horace is great fun to control and personally felt he went where I was wanted him to go.
The flipping of the world can be disorientating but I got used to it.
I absolutly plea for everyone to at least give this a go. Its not perfect but it might be the most bonkers game you've ever played.

I never finished Horace but it's really stuck with me since, particularly the story, narration and characters.
Maybe I need to go back to it.

If you want a short, Metroidvania-lite game, Gato Roboto is pretty nifty.

Has anybody played the Record of Lodoss war game that looks like Symphony of the Night? It's as shameless as a Symphony clone as can be, but it's really well made. The Ikaruga-style polarity shifts are cool too. Definitely recommend. Pretty sure it's on GamePass if you wanna try before you buy.

Thanks for the mention, I'm playing that too now. It's really well made, extremely easy though, like SotN with cheats. Still having fun, not everything has to be hard.
In other news, I abandoned Guacamelee. I was never that interested in the game because I don't like brawlers, but I heard many good things and it was super cheap in the current Steam sale so I gave it a try anyway, who knows maybe I'd like it after all. But the brawling doesn't grow on me, and in a short time it already added several more game mechanics I hate, like the switching between two layers of geometry and enemies, and then impenetrable shields that you have to shatter with one specific attack to be able to damage that enemy, and that shield comes back after a while and... eurgh. In less than two hours, instead of growing on me it just got a lot worse, so I quit. I believe this was genuinely the least fun I've had in any metroidvania.

Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth - 7.5/10
Kind of SotN light, shorter and for the most part much easier. It looks good, the soundtrack is great, it's probably the best attempt I've seen at capturing the atmosphere/feel of SotN. It even improves on it in a few regards, bows are a nice addition and movement is a little more agile and intuitive.
Sadly it's just too damn easy, the first half of the game feels almost like a tutorial. The element mechanic is vastly overpowered, if you take "damage" from your current element, you gain mana instead of losing HP. So e.g. there's a boss fight against a dragon, and if you just stick to fire element, almost every attack it has gives you mana instead of hurting you and so you can just stand there spamming your homing projectile spell. You can even walk through the lava which does the same.
Generally I think its combat is designed too much around that mechanic, a lot is about switching elements in time more than anything else--but even then, you have an invulnerable slide which you can also use to dodge wind attacks without switching element if you want.
Only towards the end it gets even a little challenging, which is a welcome change but it should have happened much sooner. The final boss is a sudden difficulty spike and then the game is over (after 5-6 hours in my case). Overall the game has many things going for it but is just a little too lightweight. Feels more like a fun diversion than a fully fleshed out main game.

All this talk and no mention of Rain World. For shame.
If you want a deep, fluid moveset and combat system, look no further. Throw in one of the most beguiling stories you'll ever experience, set within a vast, beautifully detailed hostile world and you've got one of the best games ever made imo.
And soon they are about to triple the size of it and throw in a whole load of new Slugcats with Rain World Downpour.
It's so good.

I've looked at Rain World a few times but always end up deciding it looks too aimless and unforgiving. As far as I can tell, sometimes you're just going to get unlucky and die. It's the kind of game I'd like to like but know will probably just hate playing

It requires patience at the start and it's definitely easy to write off, but the same applies to the Souls games etc. Like those, a few Google searches to give you a nudge when you're stuck doesn't hurt. Follow the little hologram sprites and go north east is my advice to new players!
Again like Souls, at some point you realise the game has been subconsciously training you as you go and you reach some zen-like level where you're bounding around wondering how you found it _so_ difficult at the start. It remains hard, but at least you have newfound skills and options.

Rain World is vastly more unforgiving than any Souls game. I've tried to get into it multiple times because I love the idea of it, but because it's so hard to get anywhere without getting caught in the rain or by some monster you didn't know existed, it's extremely demotivating to actually try to make progress. I'm sure it's possible to get good at it but the road to get there is just too painful for me.
