Abandoned: A Robot Named Fight (Steam)
The name didn't exactly raise my hopes, but I decided to give it a try knowing that I can refund it if it's bad. It's Super Metroid meets Isaac, as in it's a Super Metroid inspired metroidvania, but a roguelite like Isaac with procedurally generated maps and unlockable items and such.
Sadly it's even clunkier to control than Super Metroid, as if the developer had thought Super Metroid's jump physics were too snappy. Enemies are super simplistic, I'm constantly running/falling into enemies because of messy scrolling, for some reason your path always leads through quickly respawning "secret" shootable blocks, gunplay is very slow and unsatisfying, it doesn't look good, doesn't sound good, doesn't have any atmosphere to speak of, etc etc and God the jump physics are so needlessly clunky.
I don't know, maybe the developer has found a good way of creating procedurally generated metroidvania maps. Unfortunately it's simply not fun to play to begin with. Refund.

Abandoned: Haiku the Robot (Steam)
It's a Hollow Knight fan game. Don't know if there's much else to say. There's nothing wrong with that in itself, but if someone copy&pastes a single game so relentlessly, the question comes up why you'd play it instead of the original.
And I don't really see a reason to. It's just like Hollow Knight, except everything's not quite as good. Less challenging, less engaging, less interesting. Adds nothing to set itself apart. From what I hear it's also much shorter at some 6-7 hours playthrough time.
It's basically Hollow Knight Lite and seems to be perfectly content with that, without even trying to step out of its shadow. But even that would be ok at a reasonable price. Sadly, this games costs €19--while Hollow Knight costs €15 and is frequently on sale for €5. Imho, you can't make a clone of another game that's lesser in every single way and then ask a higher price. Got a refund because I found the price is really not justified.

So I've just got Rite for the Switch and loving it but a bit stuck now and thinking it is not that easy playing on a Lite due to teh controls.
Do people agree or do I need to accept I'm old and crap and stop blaming the tools?

I think it just takes some getting used to. That analog stick is much smaller than the other controllers and wouldn't seem suitable for 2D games generally, but its how I play most 2D games now. I completed Spelunky and Dead Cells multiple times over with that thing, no issues. Even late-game Hollow Knight, with all the extra abilities unlocked, was fine on Switch.
Definitely better than Xbox at least.

Did we have a Rogue-like thread here? Kinda wanted to ask a Spelunky related question.

I think we can let a Spelunky related question slide, just this once

How the hell do you get to hell? I used to know, back when I played it on PS4, but I've long forgotten. I still have a few characters to unlock, and I need to get to the city of gold (which I have done before), but I can't remember how to unlock that other door on the last regular level.

I’m playing Celeste currently - it’s very good.
Don’t know why I’d waited so long.

Not an hour after that post, I get the damn book, make it to Olmec and then die almost immediately trying to dig my way to the door.
I think thats the first time Olmec has killed me in years.

I booted up Dead Cells for the first time in years and was reminded of just how satisfying it is to play. More than the 'rogue-like' nature of the game, it just feels so satisfyingly punchy to play. The weapons have a nice weighty feel to them. Movement is so slick. The ground stomp, dodge roll and all that goes with it is just a pleasure to wield.
And then I get to a dead end with a door that is locked off due to a DLC pack I don't own. I get that you want to promote additional content that I have no doubt is worth every penny, but that is a dick move. On a harder difficultly I could literally risk an entire run on getting to a dead end. Just cut out that content entirely.

Only one I've played recently that's anything close is the Yoku's Island Express.

The Messenger is pretty good. I felt it lost something in the second half, but still a really enjoyable game. I played it on Game Pass, although not sure if it is still there.

It really is good. Found it frustrating in the beginning because I had difficulties adapting to its mechanics, but once it clicked I had a blast. I think it's not perfect, notably backtracking can be a little tedious, but overall definitely worth it. 8/10 from me

Is The Messenger as super tough as it seems based on the Ninja Gaiden influence? It was actually on sale until yesterday, I was tempted but decided to leave it for now.

I wouldn't say super tough, from what I recall. The back half makes you start exploring a bit and there is quite a bit of backtracking, which was frustrating and could often leave me feeling a bit lost. A couple of the boss I probably needed to repeat a few times as well. Probably on par with similar games of its ilk. Nothing as hard as the hard levels in Celeste for the platforming and no fights as hard as the hardest in Hollow Knight.
