I haven't the space or the cash for either, unfortunately!

We've been on a diet since the beginning of November, until Christmas. We have 1 cheat meal per week. The rest of the week I eat only dinner (on the small-ish side), maybe some nuts or a slice of cheese during the day if I'm really hungry. Alcohol is forbidden, except maybe once a week if we have guests over or are invited ourselves. But no more "isn't it time for drinks?" on Saturday at 4 when we're by ourselves.
But it works. The pounds they are a-droppin'. And weirdly, last Friday I drank two pints and a third bottle of wine before and during dinner and I felt drunk when the guests left.

Yeah alcohol tolerance is scary. I cut right down during the pandemic as I was counting calories and never really started again, which is good, but now I can barely hold two pints without making a fool of myself

Anyway what are people's best tips for a lapsed weightlifter who is really, really struggling with motivation. I've had about two months off and just thinking about doing a session is bleh

I often don't want to go, but once you get going, it's fine. And after the endorphins kick in- it's great! The worst thing is the gym used to be my 'me time' now two of the days I go, our urchin wants to come along too. He does his own thing and doesn't disturb me much during my workout, but still. Soon enough he'll be old enough that even the pub won't be a refuge...

Thanks lads. Also welcome advice on whether this is a decent routine: www.coachmag.co.uk/fitness/workouts/dumbbell-workoutsNeed to figure out the optimal weight for each set - I reckon it'll change. I can bang out a set of curls at 12kg easy, but can barely do any flyes at that weight. Try it. If you like it then it's good. If you're coming from a detrained position then basically any workouts will provide a novel stimulus. Loading will likely be your problem. 12kg might be fine for lateral raises but they won't do shit for squats, especially as progressive overload is needed. Mechanical tension is the primary driver for muscle growth (https://themusclephd.com/time-under-tension-2/), and this is where the lack of loading will hurt depending on what you need for effective reps. There are ways you can adapt for submaximal loads - decreasing tempo or adding volume for increased TUT, but both will increase fatigue and require more recovery. As you said: make sure food is good and you get good sleep, both really help. You can do a lot in 4 months but for big changes you need to push hard and you'll be limited by lack of equipment without gym access. All that said, just do the thing. Figure out any problems as you find them.

Thanks man.
I am absolutely starting from a detrained position. I've basically had no regular, strenuous exercise since the spring of 2019.
My arms, legs, chest, stomach and shoulders are all sore after working out 5 days this week, so I figure I'm doing something right to start with. I think it's a question of routine for the first month and then pushing on from there.
I'm not gonna look like Chris Hemsworth but shifting the flab and getting stronger are key for me. If I start to look any better with my top off, so much the better.
Gonna take the weekend off to recover and go again Monday. If I manage to sell my flat and move into town, I'll sign up to a gym.

And tbh I'm not really fat, more what they call "skinny fat." I've just got some wobbly bits around my waist and chest but I'm otherwise pretty lean and scrawny.

Definitely take rest days. Don't overdo it, as you'll injure yourself, have poor form or both.

Super helpful man, thank you. I'm wondering if I should go for fewer reps at higher weight then? Again, starting from a non-existent base position, would I be better doing the same sets but half the reps at the highest weight I can manage?

Don’t listen to Dougs, just power through. Pain soon becomes numbness, then you can go even harder 💪

Low reps generally have a greater strength stimulus, 8+ are the hypertrophy ranges. Lower weights at higher ranges will also give you more experience to perfect technique with lower risk of injury. Generally just follow the routines as prescribed until you know enough about your capabilities and movement patterns to adapt them.

Any recommendations for a compact exercise bike that's suitable for someone that's 6'2"? Really needs to be one that can fold up when not in use as we've got fuck all space here.

100% what Derbs says.
I'd learn the patterns and the forms - getting the actual exercise correct is really important - before you start worrying about massive heavy weights. Overlifting with bad form is a sure road to muscle injuries and worse.

Thanks gents. In that case, I'll drop the weight a bit so I can do the complete sets. 11kg each bell is too much at the moment.
I feel puny.

Do the Frankoman 3 days a week and you won't soon enough.
I warn you now, you'll be sore on the rest days. But it'll be worth it.
It's worth clicking the links on each exercise, btw - they have videos of how to do the form etc and it's really helpful. When you get it right, you can feel it in the muscle groups targeted.

I'm struggling a lot at the moment too, mainly because my daily routine is being disturbed & it's cold. I find that building your workout into your day really helps though; go on the way to/from work since you're out anyway, make sure your gym is close to home/work etc. Other than that, pretty much what Vortex said! Would be interested to know what works for others.

"The hardest lift is getting your arse out of the chair."
That's the truth. Motivation is overrated. Just go. Get to the gym and just start. Once you're there it will just happen, and if it's a low effort day that's ok. Consistency is everything.

I imagine (hope) I'll outgrow it but I figure to get into the habit of it all, it's the best thing for me.

I have a set of adjustable dumbbells (2kg to 20kg, in 2kg steps), but I have no adjustable bench. How would I need to adapt Frankoman's workout?

You can do almost everything on there with only dumbbells and no other equipment - bench presses on the floor, for example.

You can't get the full range of motion in the floor, the weights are nowhere near your chest. I tried that over lockdown when I couldn't get to the gym- my attempt to order for a gym bench was cancelled by amazon in the great gym equipment sales boom of 2020!
