Starting my last diet of the year tomorrow, in prep for buying a suit at the end of summer. It shouldn’t be too bad but I still don’t really want to do it. Looking forward to hitting my target and then spending 6 months eating around maintenance and just enjoying training.

So after 15 years I've gone and bought some trainers and signed up to a local gym. My intention is to go there, and get back with minimal fuss and no changing rooms. So is it socially acceptable to have a hoodie + bottle of water next to you while exercising? E.g. I just slip my house keys in the hoodie pocket and go no way near the lockers.

Absolutely.
Just remember to wipe the sweat off the machines when you're done with them.

Cool. Thanks!
Oh also basically I just need to lose a bit of weight, be less fucked in general and probably get my neck/shoulders/back a bit stronger so it doesn't hurt sitting at my desk all day.
So I was thinking jogging/cross trainer things and rowing machine?

Do squats, bench presses, overhead presses, pullups, and do 2-3 half-hour cardio workouts if you like, or skip cardio entirely in the beginning.
If you're new to lifting use something simple to start with, like Stronglifts 5x5.

I'm not fucking lifting weights. I just want to be fit, so cardio is probably the more useful thing.

For “ losing a bit of weight, be less fucked in general and probably get my neck/shoulders/back a bit stronger so it doesn't hurt sitting at my desk all day” lifting weights is going to the most bang for your buck.
If you want to be able to run then running will be the thing.

Hmmm maybe the weight machines then. Less fucked is stand in for not dying of a very Scottish heart attack in my 50s. I kinda assumed cardio was the thing for that. Plus having given up smoking and not eating like a twat.
I will absolutely not run or go near the free weights area, or go to a class. Or go anywhere near the changing rooms.
In my head I just want to go back to being a skinny goth I think. This is now impossible of course.

Nothing is impossible. You can become thin again if you want to.
When you hear lifting weight you might think of jacked dudebro muscle shirt inbred twats. When I first set foot in a gym as a teenager, the place smelled like stale sweat and within the first five minutes, I overheard a group talking about the steroids they were taking. That has (thankfully) passed; it's become mainstream now.
Lifting weights is actually the best thing you can do to keep your body healthy when getting older. I gave my old power rack and barbell set to my father when he turned 65 two years ago. Bit late to start, but he deadlifts 100kg now and is fit as a fiddle.
I would do cardio only if you enjoy the activity by itself, or feel like you lack endurance in other activities like football.

This is helpful. Thank you.
I'm 38 in a couple weeks. In my 20s I was like 6'1" and 10.5 stone which was probably badly underweight, then started putting on weight gradually over all this time. Last couple years I went up 2 trouser sizes, especially during lockdown, and to be fair I've just passively lost one again this year as I've been out and about walking everywhere again. I can still walk all day and be fine or walk back up hill with all the shopping then up the stairs to the 5th floor and be fine. So I think I'm good on stamina.
Just need to be fitter, avoid having a heart attack in my 50s (knocking off the smoking a couple years ago is probably the bigger things, though I started at 26). etc. Sweat less.
Anyway I bought trainers, jogging bottoms and a gym membership so I assume the main hurdle is over ¬_¬

Cross trainers are bobbins. Rowing machines are good. Weights will only give you tone unles you’re specifically trying very hard to bulk up, free weights are about 20x more efficient than weight machines. Take an honest look at your diet

If weights aren't your thing, does you gym have all the right cross-fit equipment? I've found that much more enjoyable than just doing weights. But you'd need a decent programme.

zephro I was 100% in your frame of mind when I wanted to get fitter, but the way I was talked into weightlifting was someone explaining to me that having more muscle, and instructing your body to grow muscle, hugely increases the amount of calories your body requires/burns throughout the day. So as long as you're not eating pure sugar and fat, you're increasing your calorie deficit too over the long term. So even if you're strictly only interested in dropping some fat, it is still a huge part of the process, especially when it comes to not putting all the weight back on. In reality it will also quickly become apparent that even a small amount of muscle really improves your look. You can drop loads of weight and still look pretty out of shape if you lack any muscle

I don't care about looking different in that sense, just want rid of the gut. I barely even wear t-shirts in public, nobody is seeing my torso ever.

As els said, the first place to start is diet. 90% of weightloss is diet. Cut out the crap, reduce portion sizes, and reduce carbs.

I find exercise encourages me to want to eat better, partly because when going for another biscuit I think how much effort it is to burn that off. The actual exercise doesn’t burn loads but obviously has the other benefits.

Diet is already fine for the most part, hence already losing a bunch of weight this year. I took over doing the food shop when my wife got a new job so there's no fucking biscuits in the house ever. Just not as active as I used to be.

I know you're not into weights, but try and do a few pushups whenever you can. There are many free guides online on progressing from whatever your current ability is.
You can put on some mass in your upper body that way that won't be too bulky etc.

Yeah there's no room for that, I worked this out with a RingFit thing on the Switch during lockdown, I can't actually do a situp or a push up in this flat without moving furniture. 1 bed flat with 2 grown adults in it and I'm 6'1 so take up a large amount of space.
Also trying on my new trainers, fucking hell they feel weird and uncomfortable.

I think you're writing off resistance training because you just want to go out in your new trainers

I really need to pull my finger out and start exercising. Happyish with my weight, but overall fitness is absolutely rubbish.
Got my missus' poxy little Davina exercise bike out of the shed so that'll do for a start I guess. Might try picking up the one punch routine again too.

Have you a kitchen counter or stairs? I've not a lot of space but enough for incline pushups. Not as good as full ones but I still manage 100 incline pushups (used to take me ages but now I can knock them out in 10 mins) most days, which is better than zero every day. Takes about 3 minutes for a kettle to boil so I do squats (I drink 3-4 cups a day so it adds up). Got a resistance band and have started doing pull aparts morning and night as I have to pass it entering/leaving the bedroom.
I know sod all about exercise so these are just examples but there's always a bit of space for something.

I've encountered a few people in my time who are in great shape and insist the only exercise they do is daily pushups.

After a year of barely doing much exercise, bar pushups and a bit of walking I'll be joining the gym next week.
I transferred back to my hometown for work and the gym is conveniently right across the road, so I'll be able to finish work, exercise and be home to my wife and young sons sooner than I would arrive home at the moment.
My first stop will be the treadmill, as my cardio is shameful. Then free weights and bodyweight exercises. I'll use the machines I'm sure but hopefully minimally.
I genuinely can't wait, it'll be life changing.
