Having seen that most releases heavily gimp the frame rate or resolution (or sometimes both) for mediocre to poor Ray Tracing results on the latest gen, what's the point?
I know PC Master Race can get games running at 4k, 120FPS+ with pretty impressive RT going, but it just seems a little pointless at the moment in the current gen of consoles.
Having played games that now lock at 60FPS, I don't know why you'd even consider playing at 30FPS for shadows that fade a little bit. The recent Cyberpunk 2077 patch is a primo example.

Yeah. Unless the game was developed by Insomniac or id software, I'd just skip ray-tracing this gen.

Can someone explain ray tracing and why I should care, in simple terms, please

It's just more natural-feeling lighting created by actually simulating the way rays of light travel from sources, reflect off objects, etc. Why you should care, well... better graphics? But since similar effects can be achieved using more traditional and less computationally expensive means, the difference might not be that noticeable to you.

It's supposed to computationally replicate the way light acts in the real world. Depending on the game, it could be sun rays and shadows, or it could be real time reflections in glass, metals, water etc. It's mean to ease the workload of programmers, but it does take a bigger hit when it comes to performance and framerate.
Looks prettier, but not worth losing 60fps IMO.

Basically it approximates light rays so shadows and reflections look how they should in real life. So with shadows, rather than one solid block of colour they fade out into the light. Also allows for realistic reflections so images can reflect better of various surfaces. Essentially it's replicating beams of light from a light source. It's processor intensive as it had to calculate the rays on the fly based on where your character is in the world and how the light moves around the level. So for instance if you threw a lamp across a metal room, it'd have to figure out where all those reflections and shadows should be in real time. That all make sense? EDIT: Beaten to it! But yeah, we all make the same point.

I'm one of those people who doesn't notice or care that much. I still have a 1080p monitor.

Essentially, yes. But imagine it having to update every single frame for every single object in the scene, accouting for all movement.

Bill is right, we didn't do PC snobbery at RPS. Mainly because we didn't think about consoles because we didn't have them, but there's not much difference these days anyway.
ETA Thinking about it, we were more intellectual snobs than technological snobs.

Danno's trying to whitewash history because he's scared that one day future generations might discover their heritage and revolt. You can't lie to them Danno, they need to know and understand what their forebears did and why

Coming out of a cat a fish, this looks like some future dystopia where some crazy scientists spliced human and animal DNA.

I'm assuming when both console makers decided to go with AMD and try to do all this cool ray tracing shit, that AMD promised them a decent/better alternative to dlss (which is pretty much the only thing that makes ray traced gaming possible for 95% of us pc users)

I do not accept phone calls from delivery companies as good business practice. Just deliver the thing, a missed call does not constitute a failed delivery attempt you lazy fuckers.

Eurgh, can see an argument with the other half looming tonight.
We've not been away as a couple practically during all of COVID (things postponed, pushed back etc) and we were due to go to Swansea this weekend to see her family and let our hair down (driving down Friday, coming back Sunday). Now though this storm has me slightly worried if it's worth the risk, particularly the red warning, when we can go down another weekend in the near future.
Am I being overcautious? Problem is her mum and dad and cousins are going down too and there's about 8-10 of us meant to be going out on the Saturday; I don't want her to feel left out if we're the only ones who don't go but on the flipside it seems a fucking daft idea with the current weather situation.

Compromise and get a train instead? I wouldn't fancy motorway driving in this, anyway.
Then again I probably wouldn't feel too safe on a train either!

I mean, yeah, red warning... Chance of death by flying object... Think I'd be bracing myself for an imminent argument in your position.
