Been hit with the dreaded drift and it's getting worse...
What's the best solution to this currently?
Assume Nintendo aren't fixing them for free or anything?
If not can I fix it myself or should I just buy a new one... And can you even buy them individually?
Sorry if there's a thread already, I searched but couldn't find anything here and the old forum Search is beyond shite.
Obviously I googled it too but trust the opinion of people here way more than the general interwebs. And I think it's just kind of a useful thing to have on the forum anyway.

They used to repair them for free, I sent one back a year or two ago and it was quick. The joycon sticks are pretty shit tbf, my minds have dropped the joycons a few times and fucked 3 sticks in total, they’re very fragile

I've managed to fix mine a few times with a simple method I saw on YouTube 1 squirt some isopropyl (I sued my non aloe very hand sanitizer) on a cotton swab 2 get it in underneath the gasket on the joystick 3 rub it all the way around the joystick(still under the gasket) 4 remove swab and roster the stock a few times 5 wait five minutes for everything to dry
Worked every time. Obviously you might have some hardware defect and not just some grime, and in that case it won't work. But I was in a position of either buying new ones, or try this thing.

I’ve had 4-5 drifts and each time I’ve sent it back to Nintendo and they repaired it for free. Last time was mid last year iirc.

The best method is to not use them. We only bust them out if we need waggle otherwise its a split pad pro or a pro-pad if docked.
Because even without the drift, they are absolutely shite controllers in and of themselves.

I've only held mine during first boot up when it made me
Does drift affect the pro controller?

No, its not a software fault, its a design fault so no other controllers are affected.

Ah I thought they might have used the same dodgy parts

Pro Controller has its own design flaws though - dpad accuracy I'm looking at you!
I've booked mine in for a repair from Nintendo. Thanks for the advice chaps.
Annoyingly I found their online form wouldn't let me include spaces in the "problem description" field or even the address!
So I used underscores. Apparently a space is a "special character". Guessing it's a recent and temporary website problem as it was an issue across several devices and browsers I tried, imagine it will stop most people being able to use the forms.

I've been meaning to send mine for a repair for ages - we already have a pro controller so we won't miss it. In the meantime, it's really annoying that you can't get the Switch to ignore the joycon inputs in favour of the pro controller (can you??). Sometimes I'll be using the controller and suddenly it switches (ha) to the joycon because of the drift.

The Pro Controller is actually also known to get drifty too. It's a hardware issue though, modern controllers tend to be made of cheaper components for sticks iirc.
The JoyCon drift is caused by the design of the stick being that as you move the stick it drags a contact over a graphene pad to work out where the stick is, which causes the pad to wear down and eventually make it so that the contact doesn't touch any more.

If there's a way of doing it, I don't know it. You can disconnect them from the Switch, obviously, but they're still connected. I haven't been into the settings to try to unpair them or whatever, but that seems like a hassle anyway since we sometimes still use them for 3 player Mariokart. I want to just switch them on and off.

Yeah my Pro Controller drifts.

I think there's a button to switch them off on the inside of each one (the button you press to pair them - press it once and they should switch off)

Yeah my Pro Controller drifts. I've fixed a drifting pro controller using the method I described above. Cotton swab, and some cleaning alcohol (like that bottle of hand sanitizer everyone has nowadays) is all it takes.

And it's a real shame as they are absolutely lovely otherwise. But I'd expect better quality for £60!
Whatever you do don't try and play Tetris with it!

My green joy con starts to drift every 3 months or so, regardless of how often it gets used. My pink, purple and orange ones are all good and have never had issues. I get the feeling its more a widespread manufacturing defect these days, rather than a design flaw. Still, it's inexcusable that its so widespread.
I've also owned both a grey set and a red and blue set and neither of those drifted within the year I had them. I've been very lucky so far.

My switch lite doesn't. Because my Pro does, I got it in my head that the problem is something to do with bluetooth.

Do the replacement sticks in that kit not suffer from drift then? It’s pretty tempting for the price, and who doesn’t love tiny screwdrivers with unusual heads?

Maybe they do, tbh none of my 6 joycons have drifted anyway but two of the went weirdly notchy after the kids dropped them. They’re cheap enough for me not to care if they start drifting in a year

Seriously, if you're about to pry your jycon open and replace electronics I recommend just swabbing it down with some hand sanitiser first. www.youtube.com/watch?v=GURa16H_QvM&t=14s

At least use isopropyl rather than hand sanitizer, I’m not sure you want thickening agents and aloe Vera gumming up your controller
