So here's the latest addition to our menagerie, meet Mildred:
I have to say she's kinda cute and quite entertaining when she's actually awake and running about the place & going crazy on her wheel but not my first choice of an additional mouth to feed round here. That said I'd not be too disappointed if the youngest said he'd had enough of her noise at night and she was relocated to my office!

Since we're down to one cat now, Velma, after her sister's demise she seems to have gradually lost a bit of interest in her food, I really don't think she's unwell at all I just think she's had it with processed crap. So I've been thinking about changing her diet from Whiskas cans (which she's had since a kitten) to a combination of cooked fish/chicken etc. Frozen fish/chicken and canned fish etc can seemingly be bought for less (overall) than what we're on spending on Whiskas (we probably throw away about 50% every can and it's £8/6 cans). Any thoughts or ideas for any additional cheapy food ideas?

Absolute top hamster content. Four legs good.
Re cheaper pet food, fuck I'm a complete failure there. Try to keep it under a tenner per kilo, but 7.5kg monster cat currently cycling through gourmet, applaws, and smilla wet food with applaws dry on the side.
Cycling through multiple brands seems to be key, fickle fuckers

If and when you do switch, do it gradually or face some unpleasant consequences, if she's been eating the same stuff all her life you'll more than likely upset her innards.

Our cat is a fussy motherfucker too. Gourmet stuff is fine for a while, then magically not fine any more. Somehow we are supposed to know when. Warm winged or murine food is always good though.
So i guess, the fresher, the better is true. If not for the local wildlife...

We only use dry food for our pets, better for their teeth, and health in general. James Wellbeloved is the brand.
Having said that, every time I open ANY sort of can our rescue cat gets very excited. I disappoint him every time. ✌️

Need to work out some kinda switchover menu as all seems a bit more hassle than just opening a tin.

Dry only for the cats (wellness core) and a mix of wet (Butchers) and dry (James Wellbeloved) for the dog.

incidentally - and i say this only for interest - there are corners of the internet (petforums.co.uk) where folks get quite ansty about purely dry diets for cats. the "it's healthier" line seems to have come from royal canin marketing yonks ago and modern advice seems to be six of one / half dozen the other, dry tends to be better for teeth but has been tentatively linked with kidney issues as they typically get a lot of moisture from food and are sometimes too dumb to drink enough water to compensate if they're eating kibble
other half is it mangler for a veterinary association and she can't get a straight answer out of any vets there one way or another. basically if they don't turn their nose up at whatever you're feeding them after you just bought a cupboard full of the stuff then you're winning

Our last two dogs were Dogue De Bordeaux and a Dogue De Bordeaux Cross English Mastiff, they weighed more than me on a good day.
A wet food diet was a surefire way to bankruptcy. I always had a good chuckle at the recommended amount of cans to give a dog that size on the label of something like Pedigree Chum, think it was 4-6 cans per meal or something insane, fuck that!
Dry food for us, Skinner's was pretty decent as far as quality/price was concerned. Occasionally chucked some wet food Chappie in there as a treat, but that was it.

minimatt, ours are dry only purely because they turned their nose up at everything else. At least they eat this shit! Damned if you do etc.

absolutely, and to stress - whatever works is good
(i really want to stress that, this is one of those topics that on some forums you might as well be discussing peace in the middle east. to the extent that i know a few vets, the correct answer seems to be - feed them and water them with whatever the fuck works)

All good. We went through so many brands etc and they just weren't interested. They ate this, it's reasonably affordable so that's what they get. The dog gets a bit of both. Cheap shit and slightly better - tbh, can't afford to switch up his wet food. We barely feed him but he's still a bit overweight. 3kg down in 26 months though.

We've hit on a formula recently that dudley will now eat, after trying royal canin, lily's kitchen, tails, wet foods of all kinds finally we tried wainwright's duck and it's a hit. Just a sprinkling of broken up coya on top and he's golden now, just as long as my partner doesn't decide to give him cheese or toast moments before I serve it.......!

Aye. Mine would eat anything. Proper gannet.
I also don't understand the whole "switching foods can upset their tummies", especially with cats. They hunt and eat all sorts ffs!
