Last night Dudley did the biggest turd I've ever seen. It was about half the size of him and perfectly straight.
I was so proud I looked past the fact he'd done it in the kitchen.

We went for an hour-long walk with the dog at the animal shelter. He's a shy, calm, gentle and rather slender dog. And also the most bestest and cutest doggy ever ofc.

Not anytime soon. It is a big commitment, and one that will last for a long time. Too many people decide to get a dog on a whim, and either don't give the dog what it needs or return it to an animal shelter after a few months.
We want to do right by the dog we're adopting. We want to be sure we want a dog in our life. And we'll take the time we need. Even if that means that Rocco (what a great name 😂) has already found a new home by the time we're ready.

Sorry if I've put pressure on btw. Absolutely solid reasoning (same boat as us at the moment)
It's a huge committment that we've debated about and backed away from for the past few years.

Honestly though, if you spent an hour with him and liked it that's pretty much enough to love him for life. We had our first dog for four weeks before a serious liver defect that cost us 6 grand showed up. We had no insurance, we paid every penny and 10 years later we've never once regretted it.

Deffo the right move being sure and getting ready. Regularly taking me neighbour's dog for walks and dogsitting her regularly has confirmed to me that as much as I love her to bits and think dogs are great, I definitely don't want to have one full time. It's a commitmen, time investment and sacrifice that I'm not prepared to make.

Definitely the right move. We wanted a dog for years and even when we finally bought our house with a garden next door to a dog friendly nature reserve we waited over 2 years before finally getting Dudley. And even then it feels like we weren't fully ready!

After sleeping on it, we discussed it again this morning. One thing is the size of the dog. We fear that Rocco might be a bit too big, because we live in a flat, and because she has doubts she'd be able to control the dog in every situation. Also, the dogs from that animal shelter are rescued from Spain, Bulgaria and Morocco, 1-4 years old and not house-trained (or otherwise trained). Perhaps this is a non-issue, but the idea of house-training an adult dog sounds quite intimidating to us first-time dog owners. The GF then turned into a human dog whistle searching the web for pictures of Labradoodle puppies, awwing in increasingly higher and higher octaves (I'm a very manly man of course, so I melted only on the inside). They seem beginner-friendly, and she's OK with the size. Let's see what we'll be thinking about the whole thing tomorrow

I got Dexter from a rescue center in Cyprus. He was 2 days away from going into the kill center.
While not an adult he was 7 months old with no training whatsoever. He picked up house training in a week and with some proper training is really great on the lead with recall. He's 60 odd kilos and very big so don't let size put you off. With any dog no matter the size they just need the proper attention and training.

I have to say, if you can do it, it’s one of the finest experiences there is. It is a big commitment…but ultimately, it’s so worth it. Dogs are great. Out with my sidekick this morning.

A tiny shi-tzu, not my favourite or a breed I would own, but she's adorable

They're a bit bonkers when they're young too. Lovely natures though.

Doesn't it depend on the size of the poodle used? I'm so new to this that I don't know how to properly describe the size of a dog. About 50cm height including the head, so the head would be at knee height? I don't know how heavy a dog that size would be. I sound like an idiot to all you experts don't I 🙃

If it's an actual Labradoodle (there are all sorts of other poodle crosses that are small) that's a miniature poodle cross. It'll still be a bit bonkers but we haven't regretted getting ours for a minute. Even though she cost us 6 grand in vets fees within three months of getting her (get insurance!)
