Saw it last night. Great movie, I'll be gutted if the second part doesn't get made.
Just the right balance of mystery and weirdness, vs being clear about what's going on.
Definitely for the biggest best cinema screen you can find. Do not fucking watch this in your lounge or Denis Villeneuve will find you and he will kill you.
Now to read the books (again - since I read them when I was about 12 and can't remember anything).
Also feeling the urge to bust out the old RTS game... Probably my favourite thing on the Megadrive back in the day!

Yeah this was really good. Gave me big Fifth Element vibes with the weird space ship designs, elaborate costumes and over-the-top villains. The visuals and score were both lavish and just a treat to behold. Very wise decision to split it into two movies as even then it felt a little rushed in places. Bring on part 2.

Tried watching it twice so far but fell asleep both times. I was very happy to discover that PS4's can play .srt files though. Fingers crossed I can stay awake in the cinema tonight...

About Part 2. WB took the same approach to It a few years ago; make Part 1 then look at the reception and numbers before greenlighting Part 2. Dune has had a strong first couple of days, despite it releasing simultaneously on HBO Max in the States.
Villeneuve says that "everyone at WB and Legendary are very happy with the film and 100% behind the project". So fingers crossed. Also Denis says he's ready to start filming Part 2 in 2022.
He's also on record as saying that he wants to make a trilogy, with Part 3 being a film of Dune Messiah, the second book in Herbert's original series.

It would be really cool to see a decent attempt at Dune Messiah, as that's where a lot of the fallout of the golden path becomes plain.

Never read the book (though may make the effort next year) and can't recall seeing the original film (it always just looked a bit shit) but saw this a few weeks ago and thought it was great. Didn't really expect any less as I like Villeneuve's style, but it's just good, grand scale sci-fi.
The gf didn't like it so much, and I kind of assumed she wouldn't despite warning her what it was going to be like. She felt it was too long and plodding, and I can understand that perspective - you could easily trim some of the establishing and lingering scenes and shave 30-40 minutes away and it would be an easier, more repeatable watch. I don't mind them, they give everything room to breathe and you get to soak up the detail but it's fair criticism. Mostly she was disappointed that I'm a thick spoiler revealing twat.

Ref Part 2. WarnerMedia CEO said this when asked about it happening:
“Will we have a sequel to ‘Dune?’ If you watch the movie you see how it ends,” Sarnoff said when asked about “Dune Part 2” happening. “I think you pretty much know the answer to that.”
Oh and HBO are making a prequel series about the Bene Gesserit.

Maybe the plan is for a big franchise with lots of spin off series opportunities. Makes sense as it's a very cool sci-fi universe.
They can't not make part 2 at this point.

brokenkey I thought it was a token nod to a flying fatman reveal as he scampered to the furthest corner away from the gas. Seeing as the room was 'empty' as the goons reenter it gives the audience all of 2 seconds to ponder where he went. Oh, and 70% return on budget after a quick look. You just know some WB suits are considering it isn't worth pushing on.

But the 70% is before it’s been released in America, U.K. and lots of other places.
I liked it, the to be continued is a bit irritating but I obviously knew it would happen.

It's the sort of film that will do well on home release as well, long time fans and nerds buying the box set and limited editions, and getting double dipped with directors cuts etc.

DVD/Blu-ray sales are a fraction of what they once were. The days when a film (like Hellboy, for example) could get a sequel based mostly off DVD revenue are long gone.

So, it's a great movie. I didn't love it quite as much as Bladerunner 2049, but it's beautiful and by far the best version of the source material I've ever seen. Villeneuve is great at just sucking you into the movies he makes and I love how you're given time to just soak in the atmosphere and actually think about what you're seeing now and then. I saw some discussion about the soundtrack, but I thought it was pretty good. No grand themes or anything that's going to stick with you, but in the context of how it was used in the film I thought it worked well. Some of the tonality, especially the vocal stuff, reminded me of traditional Eastern European vocal stuff, like this or this, which I thought was cool.
I look forward to seeing it again and hope like hell we'll get a part 2.

Going to see it tonight. Limited spaces at our local cinema, and mask usage here is still really high, so feeling alright about it. Will be my first time in a cinema in about three years, I reckon.

It's very good. I have this overwhelming urge to watch it again. I'm still not sure about the dreams and I must be getting deaf cos I can't make out half of what they are whispering!
They bloody better make part two

Absolute belting film. Watched it in a liemax so gonna go to Bradford next time for the full experience. Still the scope, the sound, the visuals and the storytelling, all were brilliant. I especially liked the way the exposition was well woven in to the plotting. Another director may have dumped it on you from all angles. One nitpick is at Villeneuve himself as I think his films have a bit of a sterile feel to them like Nolan's.

It's one of the best adverts for actually going to the cinema I've seen since I don't know when, maybe one of the Nolan films actually. So, I've only seen the original film, never touched the books (don't really intend to soon either, maybe one day) and my question is such; are the Harkonnen's purely driven by greed / lust for wealth? There was something in there about serving the Emperor. Also, and this is a tiny nit pick, but is it really set across "the universe"? I was kinda hoping they retcon'd that to the galaxy. Even a planetary war is pretty big and we get one of those in 30 minutes. Again, tiny nit pick

Not seen the new film, but in the book the Harkonnens have a long-standing feud with the Atreides. This is made worse when House Atreides is granted control of the spice mining industry of the planet Arrakis - formerly belonging to House Harkonnen. It's all a big set-up between the Emporer and the Harkonnens to put Atreides in their place.

First attempt at a spoiler tag. I'll be honest I've read dune several times but dropped off the sequels every time I tried. I found it hard to get into as the first book is building up the massive Jihad, will he follow the path, won't he etc. and then the next already has it done and dusted. And you are left picking the pieces. Anyway back to the point. Like user Zyrr says. The Harkonens and the Atreidies have a long standing feud. And the emperor uses it to his advantage to crush the Atreidies as he fears they are training an army that could rival his. I think they mention the Universe as it's supposed to show the absolute power and fragility of the long distance space travel employed by the guild. Thus the incredible importance of the spice.

No IMAX anywhere near me, so I've booked seats at the biggest screen available (Showcase Xplus) with extra legroom.
According to the booking plan, there's about three other fuckers in there with me so far, so it'll be empty.
EXTRA STOKED SO MANY ADRENALINES. I WILL KNOW YOUR CINEMA SNACKS AS IF BORN TO THEM.

This is one of the most surprising parts for me, Hans Zimmer managed to not fuck up a soundtrack for once. Must have had one of his zillion underlings do it instead

I do agree that the ending is the biggest problem but I don’t agree with those reasons. I think, if you’re going in blind, as soon as the palace assault is done you’re constantly wondering where they are going to draw the line which does suck a bit of the air out of it. I think they probably did end it in the right place probably because I don’t think there would necessarily have been a better one without dragging the movie out to 3 hours. But, yeah, I thought it was great.

Great film. See it in a cinema with good audio for best effect. Visually reminded me of arrival at times. Also Foundation is similar funnily enough. But yeah epic, sci fi film. Bring on part 2
