I watched this for the first time last night on 4k, it looks amazing in Dolby Vision & if you have Atmos you're in for a treat.
I thoroughly enjoyed the film and this is coming from someone who has never read the books (I used to read a lot but for some reason I missed this, I think I need to sort that out).
Can't wait for Part 2.

Got a whole bunch of Bafta nominations too, which will probably translate to Oscar nominations. Whether it takes anything beyond technical and cinematography awards remains to be seen. Does look like a particularly weak roster of nominated films doing the rounds this year, so perhaps it's in with a shout. Denis was robbed when BR2049 didn't win big imo, so this would be nice to see. But can also see this doing a LotR and only winning big once the final film is out.

Watched this last night and loved it. Somehow didn't realise it had been split in half though so was sad it ended midway. Looks and sounded amazing and they did a good job on casting. Wish I'd seen it in the cinema!

Finally got to watch this last night. Sat right up in the grill of my CX, cranked up the newly arrived Sonos Beam (Gen 2 mofo), and a bucket of booze on hand, going for maximum cinema effect.
First half hour I could've wept with joy, seeing it all brought to life in that way. Huge fan of the book(s) and an unashamed fanboi for the David Lynch '85 version. But as it went on it became far less engaging (verging on boring) and I spent more time comparing scenes to how Lynch did them, or wondering how the hell someone who wasn't familiar with the story would get anything from the film at all.
Then it starts to pull it back a bit late on, including some fairly pivotal stuff that Lynch skipped, then it ends.
Charlotte Rampling was wasted on, what, three scenes? Jason Momoa shouldn't have been allowed on set. Didn't seem much point in even having Piter de Vries in it.
Part Two better be a fucking cracker.

Yeah, I've definitely cooled on it, having really enjoyed certain elements of the film. A lot of real positives: looked amazing, fantastic cinematography, aesthetic and ambience spot on, music was great, and the casting itself was really, really strong, I felt. (And I'm definitely interested/excited to see the concluding part.) But I felt decisions made on the overall structure ended up really working against the film. As Phattso says, many characters/performances were ultimately disappointing simply due to the fact that we got to spend SO little time with so many of them. Pacing also felt really off, which I guess is where the complaints about the film lacking a proper third act come from. Here's how I would have done it with a view to having a Part 2 (widely lauded and well respected film director that I am): the natural ending point should have been the Harkonnen attack on Arrakis and Paul and Jessica's flight/escape into the desert. Shave off the last 30-40 mins where they meet the Fremen, and use that freed-up time/screen space to expand the section after they've first arrived on the planet. Retain the sub-plot about Jessica being under suspicion of being a Harkonnen spy, give us more time with Leto, Thurfir Hawat, the Guild ambassadors etc., possibly mirrored with a few more scheming scenes with the Baron, Piter, and Feyd-Rautha etc. I feel that would have allowed for much more time with the characters/character development, as well as expanding on the political intrigue elements of the story, and would have lent itself to a fairly standard three act structure: (i) before they arrive, (ii) on Arrakis and the perceived threat of a Harkonnen attack/distrust of the Jessica and the Bene Gesserit, (iii) culminating with the attack and escape into the desert. End. All that being said, I did still really enjoy it.

Yeah, my one astonished takeaway is that it has a longer running time than the cinematic Lynch cut, but somehow I know less about literally all of the characters. But it was just so lush to look at.

Austin Butler is playing him (if I've got his name right), the bloke who's playing Elvis in Baz Luhrmann's biopic.

I hadn't read the book or seen the Lynch one, so didn't have any particular expectations, and I really loved the new Dune.
As somehow with no interest in Marvel or the other one, it was nice to have a big expensive showy blockbuster to watch, containing 'action' scenes that I felt some investment in. Felt very epic, in a way that most recent cinema hasn't (to me at least).

Deffo Irulan, I would think.
Speaking of which, the syfy Dune Mini series is on freevee now. Prime video still has children of dune, too, if you want to make a marathon of it.

In more Dune news a mate of mine just got a job as vfx supervisor on the upcoming HBO mini series. Sisterhood of Dune I think it’s called. Should be good!

I just finished rewatching the old mini-series and it does actually hold up. The effects are a bit ropey and some of the costumes are a bit am-dram but it does really well to convey that Paul is at best morally grey and does some pretty terrible things. I think it really gets what the books are about.
My only real problem with it is that Saskia Reeves is absolutely dreadful. No wonder they recast her for Children of Dune.

I can't watch the original mini-series, mainly because of Baron Hammy and Cockerney Halleck, but Children of Dune was still good when I rewatched last year.

Oh yeah, Gurney is dreadful, too. No pugs carried into battle: 2/10
I thought McNeice was ok, though. Assuming he was asked to play the role as a pantomime dame, that is.

Yeah, the mini-series do a lot of things right, especially children. They're just really hampered by the budget.

I tried but the budget and lack of flair/style were a bit off putting. Will give it a proper go once the family are covid-free and out of the way.
