I think this was fairly well expected, wasn’t it? It was pretty much written for him.

Does it have huge slow moving space ships?
As long as he gets to do Dune part 2 first...

Well one ship and it’s not staying around for long!
Great story and available in the SF Masterworks range if you’re a book wanker.

Yeah, Villeneuve was made for Rama. Not much happens and it's all epic empty SF scapes.

Oh boy, I was just thinking about Rama this morning in the context of Dune being impossible to make into a film, but now been done very well. Did we have a specific thread about it on the old place? Cos I seem to remember admitting that I've read all the abysmal sequels; which tried to give it a story. Rama is fine just as a book.

I gave up midway through book 3; probably best to ignore the sequels IMO.

I couldn't finish the second one. And when I tried to give it back to the person from whom I borrowed it they refused and told me it was my problem now.

I'd avoid anything where Clarke scribbled some notes on the back of a serviette to Gentry Lee.

I never realised they made four! Well done on getting through it! The scifi section of our school library was, basically, Asimov and Clarke. I've read all the 2001 books, too.

They don't get better either, but good writing was never really Clarkes strong point for me, just the staggering intellect to come up with it all. Amazing ideas, but less than scintillating writing.
Anyway Villeneuve + Rama = a squee from me, as much as anything does these days.

Clarke has written things that are a bit more lyrical. Normally he's stoic doctor and sexy lady assistant guy (he's not alone in that oeuvre of SF writing) but Childhood's End has some flowery prose, especially at the end, that is unusual for Clarke.

Despite being a big sf fan, I've never actually read any Clarke. Not really sure why. I think it sounded a bit intimidating when I was young, and I assumed it'd be a bit redundant now.

The syfy adaptation was surprisingly good. They do (very infrequently) sneak out the odd decent thing
EDIT: Childhoods End, that is. The Dune adaptations are also pretty good.

I quite liked the SyFy dune adaptions, but you have to be able to overlook the weird costume choices and the obviously insufficient budget. The second one in particular was pretty good.
The new movie kinda makes them redundant though. They aren't even in the same league as that.

I've been listening to an audiobook of The Hammer of God, one I haven't read. I think it's about an asteroid heading for earth but 90 minutes in and were still setting up the stoic doctor, who is taking part in the moon olympics or something. I think. It's not an easy listen

The new movie kinda makes them redundant though. They aren't even in the same league as that. I think there is plenty of room for both. The budgets may differ but the TV series has a largely great (if occasionally uneven) cast, and a lot of great sequences. And tons of very beautiful people.

Silly question but I want to read the book as I can't wait for part two. Do I just need to first novel dune that would encompass the two movies?

Yes, you'll only 'need' to have read the original Dune if you're primarily thinking about the second part to the recent movie.

Also the ms Xbox movie app is shit. I bought uhd dune from there and any panning camera or high motion stuff is juddery. I don't get that on Disney, netflix etc in 4k. Might ask for a refund. I assume it's just the shit Xbox app or something.

Wowsers indeed. Going by that stock photo of him, Villeneuve doesn't have eyes- must make his job incredibly difficult.

Yes, you'll only 'need' to have read the original Dune if you're primarily thinking about the second part to the recent movie. And for the rest, you only need to read Messiah and Children Of. It all gets a bit silly after that.

Finally had some time to watch this last night. It is as good as I had hoped it would be but I don't think it's a good for the average viewer.
I'm glad that I didn't have my wife watching this with me, she would've been bored senseless after the first 10 mins.
I loved the history and lore that the film showed within the Dune universe and the harkonians weren't comic bad guys this time.
Can't wait for Part 2!
