Here’s a wee dump of comments on one of my local FB news pages:
What's the NRA got to do with it, its the ATF and Congress that makes gun laws.....not the NRA. And guns don't kill people! People with evil intent in their heart kill people with or without the use of a gun. Want gun laws to change, lobby your congressional representative like I do.
Alison Clay you mean the children that weren’t aborted? Don’t pretend to care about kids if you support killing them in the womb.
Just send the asteroid already. My god. This world is garbage. I'm ashamed to be a human being these days.
I’m heartbroken for these families..these babies, who will never be able to gown up, get married, start a family, first kisses, first dances, first love ….that never happen. I’m also completely DISGUSTED at the comments on this thread regarding pro-life/pro-choice. This is NOT about that. This is about 14 sweet babies that are GONE. Leaving behind families that love them. That will weep for them every single day. How selfish, narcissistic, ignorant and cruel can you be to use this tragedy to propagate your own agenda? Go troll somewhere else and let the grownups mourn in solidarity. You’re not wanted here.
Why is there never a gun toting patriot around to protect when this happens??? Any Mass shooting!

Enjoy, if you will, the typical to and fro facebook discussion I've had a million times.
Dirtbox How about banning lobbies? Call it what it is, bribing politicians for corporate interests. In this case, the NRA and the firearms industry. Watch Texas try to insist their under-paid teachers should also be armed bodyguards now. Reply52 m
Kevin R Grace Dirtbox that would help. Pay the gun carriers more than the other teachers. Reply50 m
Dirtbox Kevin R Grace Oh sure, add guns to the gun problem. Reply46 m
Kevin R Grace Dirtbox yeah genius, leave students with no chance? Dumb comment Reply43 m
Dirtbox Kevin R Grace The dumb comment is yours. If people are the problem, not guns, why let the problem have guns? How many more children do you want to see slaughtered? Reply41 m
Kevin R Grace Dirtbox it's your dumb comment. You're not getting the guns from the people. Time to protect students. Get metal detectors. Look for an answer that is realistic and not idiotic. You're obviously a bleeding heart liberal Reply38 m
Dirtbox Kevin R Grace The armed guard at the school shooting in Buffalo (to name one) was murdered right along with the kids. Active shooter drills and school fortresses are not how I want to raise my kids just so you can drink moonshine and shoot varmints from your back porch. Reply36 m
Unfortunately, he stop responding after that last comment.

Texas Gun Laws: Some Q & A
Q: Do I need a permit to buy handguns or long arms in Texas? A: No. However, you must be at least 18 to purchase a long arm, 21 or older to buy a handgun, and 18+ to possess a firearm in general (there are exceptions to this last rule for minors using guns under adult supervision).
Q: Does Texas require residents to register long arms or handguns? A: No.
Q: Does Texas have an “assault weapons” law? A: No.
Q: Does Texas require an owner license for firearms? A: No.
Q: Do Texas gun laws permit the concealed carry of handguns? A: Yes

Pretty sure I saw an ad even a few years ago promoting bulletproof school bags for kids. They'll do anything to try and address the problem while not fixing the problem, hell if we can profit off it so much the better. Why not arm the teachers with guns too, hell let's teach little Jimmy how to shoot a glock. Took Australia one mass shooting to say 'Nah' and just banned it all. It's of course not as simple in the US but it's so depressingly ingrained that you just have to say what a massive fucking shithole it is that these things get normalised.

Pretty sure there are more mass shootings that dont even make the news. It is normalised now in US culture. I mean the UK has a while bunch of fucking issues but I'm glad gun twattery isn't one of them.

It's not ok to have an abortion because you are killing a child, yet it's ok to kill children with a gun? A gun you can get at 18 in a place where you can't drink until you are 21.
The UK, Australia and New Zealand had mass shootings, banned firearms and they still have gun problems.

I don't think it's going to appreciably change. Americans just love their guns too much, and none of these shootings seems to have moved the needle on that.

I have friends and family in the US, who I get along with totally fine in pretty much all aspects of life, until yet another massacre happens and some of them post up sarky messages online like this (copied word for word):
"If we just stripped law-abiding citizens of their guns, deranged criminals wouldnt be able to commit atrocities like this anymore!"
This was their one and only comment on the subject, not even a "thoughts and prayers".

What doesn't help is that police suspected he was wearing body armor and thus reluctant to engage, only to find out he wasn't.
But hey, only way to stop bad guys with guns is good guys with guns right??

How many shootings have actually been prevented by these apparently vigilant citizen gun holders?
If one of the arguments is that gun holders can prevent mass shootings, well, they're doing a pretty shitty job.

I imagine a lifetime of consuming media with heroes single handedly taking down an entire battalion has fuelled this belief of a hero with a gun.

How many people die in mass shootings per year? The Wikipedia articles on US gun deaths and mass shootings are pretty comprehensive.
The figures for Mass Shooting (Not the number of people who died in them)
US Mass Shootings
1982 - 2011 = 1 every 200 days.
2011 - 2014 = 1 every 64 days.
2019 = 417
2020 = 611 2021 = 693 (10 per week)
So far 2022 = 198 (11 per week) and counting (current death toll: 290)
The definition on what constitutes a mass shooting is not fixed though.
Remember, those are mass shootings.
By comparison there were 33 gun deaths in England and Wales in 2021

Good guys with guns stopping bad guys with guns is logic that pretty much rarely exists in reality.

Quick maths says we have 1 gun death per 1.8 million people.
If we low ball that an average mass shooting kills 2 people in the US, based on those numbers, that's between 20-22 per week. That's over 1,000 people per year.
Or, simply, a 9/11 every 3 years.
