I think a big reason book wankers like myself thought people in the book were white is because the original book covers depict everyone as white.
Oh and not at all convinced Tolkien was a racist. It's the modern day reinterpretation of lotr that made me drop it at A Level. Sauron wasn't Hitler, Tolkien said so, yet people still say it was.

It's the modern day reinterpretation of lotr that made me drop it at A Level. Sauron wasn't Hitler, Tolkien said so, yet people still say it was. Agree re: the book covers. First time I read it I went from them and assumed the same. Second time, more recently, I was just listening and had fewer assumptions so it stuck out that really only a couple of characters are definitely what we'd call white, and it seems like most Two Rivers people are probably kind of dark. Of course it's kind of immaterial, as one of the articles points out, because very little of the books is about race (the article said none, but that's not true but we're getting into book spoilers there). Re: Tolkien I think it depends what you mean by racist, doesn't it? If it's "hates people because of their race" and/or "thinks some races are genuinely inferior", then I totally agree. No sign I can find of that in Tolkien (the scholarly stuff I've read tends to concur, too, including by non-white scholars). If it's "assigns people specific characteristics because of their race in a kind of creepy manner" or "reliably makes darker-skinned people baddies, and associates baddies with the appearances of non-white human races", then he definitely does do that, there's no getting around it. So like, BNP/Nigel Farage racist? No. BoJo racist? Sure. There's a similar vibe to the whole "letterbox" comment and the "half-orcs look like ugly mongols" bit in LotR. Doesn't make me hate the books or anything, personally. The funniest thing about Tolkien is that conservatives love him but the dude was a utopian anarchist who literally advocated for blowing up factories (terrorist-style). I'm not talking about the Scouring of the Shire, he was extremely clear about it in his letters. He had more in common with Ted Kaczinsky than Enoch Powell politically. (I can 100% back this up with specific links btw lol)

So, Grima and Boromir, the nazgul who were easily tempted and weak willed humans, the human armies of Harad and the Easterlings and the Dunlendings showed white humans as good? I think you're looking for something that isn't there. I'm sure you could show me various websites from various people that back you up, but that's the internet for you.
He wrote a fantasy tale based on old myths and legends that he loved and he intertwined that with his love of language and having a smoke. I don't agree he said "these lot are dark skinned therefore they are evil and everyone else is good". I mean look at the Numenorians, they were as white human as it's possible to be and they fell massively.
Anyway, back on topic, I watched this week's episode. I liked the new character. Not so keen on the new scenes, but I can see why they're there. This week seemed a bit info heavy and action light to me compared to the previous week. I'm still very much looking forward to next week, but would have liked more.., stuff happening.

I thought it was the best episode yet - in fact, I thought it was excellent, and surprisingly hard-hitting.
Premature, maybe, but I'm starting to think this series could become something special. Definitely more entertaining than the books.
(Disclosure: I'm not really a book wanker, but I read most of them...the story was good, but the prose and pacing were so leaden I wonder now why I persisted for as long as I did)

Agree with the series being an improvement on elements of the books. When they got where they got today, I thought "that didn't happen... but it's better". It's keeping me guessing. My wife's convinced she knows who the dragon is and can no longer see the point of the rest of them. 🙂
I've not seen anyone tug a braid or be concerned about creases in their clothing, so that's good. Really, really disliking a certain child (though how were they East when they headed South?) and Hamster Cheeks is increasingly creepy.

I'm still very much looking forward to next week, but would have liked more.., stuff happening. The Dunlendings, Harad, and Easterlings are all described as darker-skinned or "sallow" (i.e. East Asian skin tones) - that's exactly the point - it's discussed in the link in one of the articles posted earlier. But if you seriously want to discuss it we can make another thread. It's not "people from various websites", I'm talking actual Tolkien scholars, note. Just as a general point, if some white/pale are bad, but all non-white/darker characters are bad, you probably have an issue (vice-versa too of course). There's some more nuance to it of course, but that'd be a thread derail. On-topic, I liked the episode this week, I think it's necessary for them to have a bit of time to breath, and it's really impressed me how much they've covered in how little time, and also how efficient they are at conveying certain things. It definitely feels to me, based on my knowledge of the first book at least, that the writers/showrunner "get it", and indeed are able to convey stuff a bit better than I think Jordan himself managed (always a man desperately in need of an editor - not something I'd know anything about of course...). Agree with Flexible that it does look like it could be something special, definitely can see why they already renewed it for a second season.

Am I supposed to know who these white-robed religious psychopaths are yet? I don’t quite get why they are able to go about catching the ay…witches without anyone batting an eyelid just outside their massive city.
Who the hell’s actually in charge around here?

Ok, so this thread now allows for book wankery, and the original post has been updated to reflect this brave new world
I'm not a mod or anything so can't enforce this, but... - If it's a blatant plot spoiler, put it in spoiler tags, with a "book discussion" warning, or something similar
- Things that are just general "hey where the white people at" (ie. not related to plot) probably don't need tags (this is subject to change if enough people complain about it)
- Try not to get cute with hinting at future developments (ie. don't do it, if you're at all unsure just don't do it)
- Don't be a dick (this is the most important one)
And if this isn't sufficient, then go make your own thread ;p

I've given up on sleep and gone on my computer. I might as well get some work done if my brain won't shut the fuck up. Before I do... White Cloaks and what their powers are (spoilery book wanker stuff, though I have only read the first 4 books and I'm not an expert on them at all): In the books that questioner guy is an outlier. The majority of the Whitecloaks are "good" if misguided people looking for evil in the form of Dark Friends. Think Crusaders, well intentioned (ish) but seeing evil in anything that's a bit different. The questioner in the first couple of books is very much like a member of the Inquisition and sees evil in everyone. In the books, when they catch Perrin and Egwene, they are hiding suspiciously and when caught, Perrin kills a couple of them. Despite that, the lead White Cloak treats them pretty well and tells the questioner to back off. In the books, they are not captured while in the shadow of the White Tower and the Questioner is not going around with a colection of Aes Sedai rings. If he did, that would have brought war (which some White Cloaks think is needed as they think the Aes Sedai are evil witche). In the books, Moraine and Nynaeve are approached by cocky Whitecloaks wihin sight of the White Tower, but the WhiteCloaks back down for that reason and according to Moraine would not have done anything and were just trying it on.

I don’t quite get why they are able to go about catching the ay…witches without anyone batting an eyelid just outside their massive city. Who the hell’s actually in charge around here? They are basically a self appointed army of the righteous. Most countries and rulers do not allow them to practise their "justice of the light" in their cities but it's impossible to stop an army out in the wilds or small villages. They are, without fail, self important arseholes and almost always antagonists. And yes, in a series full of self-important arseholes. And yes, including Galad. Good episode, 5. I'm enjoying it. My question wax roundly answered. More changes but none of them particularly upsetting. Interesting focus on the warders and I like the way they talked about Stepin's miniature models of the Forsaken. They'd better get a wriggle on and get themselves where they're going, only 3 episodes left in the series.

One thing I like is that they are addressing the game of thrones travel thing where it would take people 2 days to cross a continent. Here at least they have characters say "Golly that 20 days of walking was hard."
Not perfect but at least they note it.

I thought the Whitecloak scene in this episode was a bit much. I get that the guy is meant to be a villain, but he never really seemed like the "I think you're a witch, but if you're not I'll just torture your friend to death lol" kind of villain. It felt like it was trying to be grimdark for the sake of it, I guess to draw the GoT people in.
And besides, it's not really explained just how he's managed to kill so many people who can shoot massive fucking fireballs from their hands. Does the white armor give him bonuses to sneaking or something? How does he get the jump on them?
Anyway, it was a bit of a step down from last week, but there were still things to like. Rand's little conversation with Loial was cool, and the Ogier makeup didn't look as bad as I thought it would. And I loved the bits about Aes Sedai and their Warders, even though I didn't feel that sad for the one that died. Maybe if we'd met him more than one episode ago lol.

White cloak moustache twirler always seemed evil to me, he was burning people alive the first time he was introduced so torture seems standard behaviour.
Vandelay mentioned it has a cheapness to it which I agree with. No doubt the budget is obscene but there's something slightly off about it. This carries through to the deaths in ep 4. They didn't really have any impact. So would have preferred they didn't spend so much time on funerals of 2 episode characters.
The good definitely outweighs the bad, I'm enjoying it and hoping for a few seasons.

The cheapness is because the budget is smaller than some shows, relatively speaking. We don't know exactly how much, $10m per episode was claimed, which is the same as The Witcher, but has to be spread over a lot more characters and locations, and it might be lower than that, given the showrunner has grudgingly alluded to budget constraints a bit.
That's one of those things Amazon can fix if it wants though, thankfully.
Be interested to see how the Lord of the Rings show ends up looking, given the sheer amount being spent on that. Still kind of annoyed they replaced the lead (Will Poulter, who has been pretty great in everything I've seen him in, with Robert Aramayo, who has been close to unwatchable in some stuff and "meh" in the rest, no idea what happened there).
I fixed the weird-ass pink/green colour stuff by turning off HDR btw if anyone is still having that issue.

I watched the first 5 minutes before getting interrupted by life. (actually before realizing my kids would wake me up at 5:30 the next day so I should probably go to bed.) That first 5 minutes did look cheap. I'm sure it's entirely fair to judge it on that. Amazon calling their show Lord of the Rings, when it *isn't* lord of the rings is confusing the hell out of me. Every time it's mentioned I have to go look up whether they're remaking the movies, and remember again that it's actually set 1000s of years before. Sigh.

I guess when you pay $250m for the rights alone, you're going to damn well use that branding even if it's not quite right!

Was it Sauron? He rises to power in the SA doesn't he? So I suppose it could still technically be called that as he is the Lord of the Rings, even if he hasn't made all the rings yet. Mind you he makes the rings in the SA doesn't he. Maybe the series will end with him holding all the rings and turning to the camera and announcing "Now I am the LORD OF THE RINGS!".
If it's not him I don't know who the Lord of the Rings is. Pippin? Gloryfinger the elf? Or whatever he's called. The one who isn't in the films but is quite important.
I don't know it's been a long day.
I liked Ep5 of the Wheel of Time. Thanks.

It's Sauron (aka the Bringer of Gifts). He was Morgoth's chief underling. He made rings of power that he gave to Elves, Men and Dwarves and forged a ring in secret. "One Ring To Rule Them All, One Ring to Bind Them". The 9 men he gives the rings to become the Nazgul. The ones he gives the dwarves are lost (but may have contributed to their greed). The remaining ones the Elves are given are held my Galadriel and Elrond. That's why Galadriel thinks much that they made may become undone as it was done with the power of her ring. Gandalf has a ring too. I think Celebrimbor taught Sauron initially. The most powerful creature on Earth was Tom Bombadil (within his lands). After that it was probably Galadriel....or anyone with the one ring.

Incidentally, that's made me remember that there's new LotR audiobooks out narrated by Andy Serkis. Quite fancied giving them a listen. His reading of The Hobbit was pretty good. I did try to read the books a few months back. Read Fellowship and then just couldn't be fucked. I could do the audio books though.

Yeah he did. I think Sauron only forged his own and instructed Celebrimbor and other smiths to make the other rings. If he could make his own why didn't he just bother to make the rest as well? Lazy fucker or master delegator?
Possibly. Or maybe Pippin and Gloryfinger made them.

No doubt the budget is obscene but there's something slightly off about it. Bad costume design, mainly, which can be changed. I think its also why they changed the armourer for the witcher. All of the costumes, armour and weapons look like the first time anyone has put them on which makes everything look incredibly artificial.

There were three elven rings made lastly by Celbrimbor and Sauron never touched those. However, they were forged using some of the knowledge that Sauron gave the Elves so that's why Galadriel wasn't sure if the things made would last or not. 6 he gave to the Dwarves and most of these were thought to be consumed by dragons. The last known one was in Thrain's possession but lost when The Necromancer caught him. Apparently as soon as Suaron put on the one ring, the elves became aware of him and took off their rings which prevented him controlling them. Even though he hadn't touched them or forged them, the one ring was still powerful enough to control the 3 elven rings... apparently.

Don't see why they can't just get the cast dressed and shove them into a puddle prior to filming. The whitecloaks are a perfect example. You're going to fanny about on horseback and torture cunts all day and still have whiter than whites?
