This one is about the TV show and nothing to do with the books, so if you haven't seen Ep4, don't click it... Was Carene (sp?) - the green ajah Aes Sedai who healed Moiraine - dead at the end or did she breathe, healed by Nynaeve's burst of power like Moiraine? I thought she breathed but her warder still looked distraught. Maybe he was supposed to be shocked. WAFO, I guess but it left me wondering...

Just judging by the way her Warder went crazy.

MolarAm🔵 Agreed - she definitely was during the battle because of the warder. But I thought she stirred at the end Another difference I liked. The warders were cool, with different weapons and stuff. They’re a bit identikit in the books.

well it’s Rand isn’t it? I deduced this because A) He was the first character we saw and B) He is a twat C) Nothing interesting has happened to him except he’s had a few bad dreams. Everybody else is having something cool happen with them. I’ll be pleasantly surprised if I am proved wrong though. I was going to respond with a spoilery thing (which I quickly deleted), but I think I'll just let the story play out. Yeah, can we keep any of that “nudge nudge wink wink this might be what happens in the books …or is it”stuff out of here please.

Ok cool, more than happy to use the other thread for it. I guess it just depends on how many other people are!

For what it's worth, this series is far lower on the "OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT HAPPENED" scale than something like GoT.

Anyway, to go back to my earlier question
Does anyone else think that Liandrin looks eerily similar to Lucy Lawless?

I missed the (apparent) Game of Thrones furore, but then, I didn't watch more than a few episodes anyway.
I'll only spoiler TV stuff from now on.

Anyway, to go back to my earlier question Does anyone else think that Liandrin looks eerily similar to Lucy Lawless? Not to my eye. Both have unusually broad faces with prominent cheekbones, and there's some similarity around the eyes/top of the nose, but most of the nose, the mouth, the chin, jaw and so are significantly different, and they also have totally different builds - Kate Fleetwood (Liandrin) is kind of compact and of average height and has a head that looks large relatively (she has my sympathy, I'm 6'2" and I have a head so big it looks large relatively), whereas Lawless is rangy and tall and her head fits that. I used to be pretty great at portraits so I may be excessively sensitive to this kind of thing though. I can definitely see how Fleetwood would put you in mind of Lawless, but I don't find them to be very similar myself - it's like when people say Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neeson look similar - they do have some similar features for sure, but also some really different ones. Now Jaime Pressly and Margot Robbie, then we're talking re: similar (luckily Robbie has a very distinctive acting style).

Someone described the books as fairly generic fantasy and so far that's probably a fairly accurate summary of the episodes to date but I'm really enjoying it.
Do I like any of the main characters? Not so much. Do I think the Trolloc creature design was a bit naff? Yes.
However I'm looking forward to seeing where the story goes and there's plenty there which has potential for some interesting storylines.

They're very generic (if that's not a book wanker spoiler) and I think that whether the story ends up going anywhere particularly unique, or doing so in a particularly surprising way, is going to mainly boil down to how the tv writers decide to handle things. The main strengths of the books are very Tolkien-esque, in that he's very good at making a detailed fantasy world.

It really doesn't feel like a 'world' yet. Lots of individual locations but there's no sense of a connected kingdom/empire or whatever is meant to be. Maybe that will come.

Well, I haven't watched it yet, but it sounds like they've cut out most of that. Which is probably a good thing, as it did contribute to the snail's pace of the books.

I think it would be relatively easy to fix, just have a map or something that shows where people are. That's one thing that GoT did really well (at least until people started warping all over the place)

Jordan took a ton from three sources: 1) Lord of the Rings. 2) Dune (this often weirdly overlooked for some reason). 3) Eastern religion/mysticism, particularly Daoism and Buddhism. Depending on which of these you emphasize, the WoT show could look a lot more or less "generic". It's always going to look pretty generic though. I really liked the fourth episode and I felt like it was a bit less generic in terms of vibe and events, we'll see if they can keep that up.

Just seen the fourth episode and I loved it. There were differences to the book, but it made it much more dramatic and I didn't see a single braid being tugged. I see what people mean about some of the actors being pretty good.
The stuff Mat did was good and caught me out at one point. I also liked the Logain stuff, which I thought was well done. I was pretty unsure about it for the first couple of episodes, but it can keep this up.

Hey watching this, is the one power just some genetic ability to mind control nanites left over from some past futuristic age? The graphical representation seems to point to it. Or ya know, it's just fantasy.

Are we even allowed to answer on this thread any more? 😁
I think it's kinda mentioned by Moiraine in one of the first episodes what it actually is. But basically "magic".

It's drawing on the source which is a well of magic that they connect to and channel through themselves.

The only sci-fi thing about this is the Dr Who-esque costume and casting budget.

Watched the first couple of episodes and not sure if can be bothered with more. Feels very generic without any real hook.
Everything so far is ok, which is all fine and dandy if it was BBC Sunday evening stuff 10 years ago. But when their is simply so many streaming series not sure be all that bothered. Does it get less generic, more clever/different ?
