The Athletic, being American, refers to sports teams as singular. "Peru beats Paraguay to seal World Cup playoff. Canada has booked its place in the World Cup." It's not right. And it annoys me. I don't understand any of this, but, thankfully, I fucking hate sport, so it probably doesn't matter. It's more a grammar thing than sport. US English refers to collective nouns like a team as a singular (Canada has booked its place in the World Cup), British English refers to them as plural (Canada have booked their place in the World Cup). The US version seems wrong to my head. It's a single team, which is a collection of players, so either could be argued to be correct. But theirs is wrong.

All sport? To each their own. Pretty much. I hate the concept, the values, the ugliness it brings out in people. I find it a waste of time in almost all respects. You could say that I hate it on principle, although that does seem a little silly, I admit. I make exceptions for just a few things: I don’t mind watching golf, darts and snooker. Hey ho.

Whilst I generally share your opinion of a hatred of sport and you say you find it a waste of time you then ironically mention you don't mind golf, darts and snooker, possibly three of the most mind numbing sports that exist.

I'd love not to follow sport as closely as I do. It's a massive time sink and influences my mood way more than it should. Whole weekends ruined by a poxy football game. Struggle to not give a shit though.

I just don't see it. I'm all for excelling in personal endeavour and all that, but sport seems to be completely ruined by money and hooliganism these days, even at the most amateur/younger level. When a regular event at a children's football match is dads rolling around on the floor fighting each other, and, at the top level, organisations such as FIFA being blatantly corrupt, I really don't see much of a positive anywhere. As you say, though, "to each their own". I'm glad you enjoy it.

For sure the whole of professional sport is corrupt and money driven but about 99% of sport is played by regular non professionals who just enjoy going for a bike ride or running to keep fit.

Albeit to condemn football because of the actions of a few is confusing enough. To damn sport as a whole is just bewildering. Especially when you clearly have no interest in the aforementioned yet feel able to say how something is "completely" ruined. Whatever works for you though, genuinely!

Syrette It is all rather silly of me, and I completely understand that everyone would think that. I just seem to have an allergic reaction to sport! Maybe I should have tried that as an excuse with my PE teacher all those years ago... Heh. Thanks for the chat - to you and others involved. Erm, no harm no foul, am I saying that right?

Posting links in text, especially without context. Just post the link and say what it is if it's not clear. Otherwise I'm not clicking on your link. I'm not

When you download programmes on Sky but they still have adverts on them.
Fast forward and it's a short one so you have to rewind the bits you skipped. Think it's a short one again but it's not, so you leave it longer than you should. Then it's finished as soon as you press fast forward so you need to rewind again.
Fuck you Sky.

Also if you ever purchase a movie from Sky Store it begins with a 10 second “SKY STORE - HERE IS YOUR MOVIE” thing at the front of it. Just fuck off!

PVC-free cling film. It's no longer a film, more a blanket, and the only thing it clings to is itself in a great big useless ball. Congratulations on saving the planet from PVC poisoning by making me throw 2/3rds of the roll straight in the bin.

People who promenade around town 4 or 5 abreast like they're in an episode of Sex in the City, blocking pavements and expecting others to move out of their way can burn in a nuclear fire.

Damn straight. When they look up, see you, and then make no effort to give you room, that's when you get the itchy trigger finger

Easy peelers that are medium-hard peelers.

Even worse, when you've gone to the effort of peeling one for it to not taste like anything

Ah yeah, those ones that taste like diluted orange squash are the true taste of disappointment.

I hate it when you finally finish peeling and you realise it was actually an armadillo.

Something about peeling an orange always makes me cringe, even though I like oranges and the smell. I don't think it's the texture or anything tactile. Maybe the spray

I haven't really bothered with satsumas/tangerines etc for years as they're never 'easy peelers', probably because they're all forced now rather than left to ripen at their natural rate, I just buy oranges if we want something along those lines and I just cut that rancid skin off.

That's the orange's defence mechanism kicking in.
