I think I'm one of the few football fans I know who is actively refusing to watch it. Would have expected more people to be against it but that sportswashing does its job. I'm the same but whether I have the self discipline to say no to social invites for the odd match is a different matter. Looking forward to being told to get off my high horse.

As soon as Ingerlund put 10 past Guam in the opening group game and the papers scream about it coming home, all will be forgotten as per usual.

That link doesn't work, but if you go to the site homepage it's one of the top stories.

It's really weird, like they don't want direct linking to stories so that's strange, yeah go to SBNation.com and it's on the front page.

Aussies did a good thing. It's nice, but would have been even better if it had ended with "...and until these measures supporting workers are implemented, we're not going to play in your stupid World Cup", or "...until homosexuality is decriminalised, we're going to play under our official flag, which is now the Pride flag". It's better than nothing! I just don't know how much the important people are actually going to start caring about it, not until words come with action.

Yeah. Unless a team actively spends their time out their talking about gay/ women/ minority rights or mentioning the treatment of migrants, it's hard to really feel like they give a shit.
Was hoping the likes of Germany or France would fuck it off, tbh

I'm sure they care! But there's only so much you can care about addressing a wrong without having to actually sacrifice something. It's like the people who wanted to boycott the Winter Olympics in China over Uyghurs and such. The rejoinder to that was "well, think about all the athletes who trained so hard for this, what about them?" And yeah, it sucks for them! It's not easy to say "actually you know what, we don't want money and sporting glory if it benefits a dictatorship and comes at the cost of human lives". I don't really know that there's a good solution to it, mind. But all this "this is monstrous but we're still going to play, we're helping them to improve!" stuff feels a bit

The solution is not to let FIFA be controlled by money grabbing cunts but football is run by money grabbing cunts so no hope of that.

For the first time in years, I have zero interest in this world cup. I would normally watch as many games as possible. But will stick to just the home nations, possibly highlights.
England will probably go and win it, and the football world will collectivity say, 'So what?'

Maybe if they didn't want people to focus on human rights abuses and deaths and corruption in Qatar, they should not have taken the bribes to hold the World Cup in Qatar

I'd say I really hope this World Cup is going to be a massive disaster but it looks like it's practically a certainty at the moment.

I think I’ve decided not to watch it. It feels like an absolutely futile drop in the bucket but football deserves better than this and has for a while.

Didn't watch much of Russia either but buckled sometimes. It's a pity as I've mostly gone off club football since a long time back but I'd watch as much of the the big Championships as I could. Oh well.
