The tory scum have lost control
then you have the usual reddit tankie dickheads defending it saying "well its actually single mum trying to feed her baby rite" I wonder if they will say when some thugs steals their expensive bike by punching them as they know the police will do fuck all?
I don't think security guards can do much at this scale, even if stories had any. Sure Rishi and hunt the cunt has plans for private police force, OCP style

Surely this is the social cost of austerity?
You cut all the social programmes people rely on because of the upfront cost, you get a bill at the end of it. Whether through increased crime, increased mental health problems , ad infinitum.
In the long run, it costs more and makes society a worse place.
At this point, you have to say it's ideological, which is dangerous. The government are applying 1980's, or Thatcherite solutions to an economy that is 40 years down the line and needs new solutions and they don't have the talent to think of anything new.

BBC had a few interviews with shoplifters too. I'd imagine that even if you only start because you need to put food on the table for your baby, once you've started it'd be difficult to stop if it's really that easy and consequence free. www.bbc.com/news/uk-66974506

It’s austerity, inflation and stagnating wages. If people don’t have the money to feed themselves then many will turn to crime.
Seems kinda obvious but difficult for the conservatives to understand. Next step is for them to bang on about all the new police they’ve employed.

It's worked quite well for them in the past. Complain about benefit scroungers and cut benefits. Complain about crime and claim to be tough on crime. Repeat.

with your BBC news link it really does show its not people struggling to survive to get enough food, its a lot of thieving scum who to steal things so they can have glitter body butter and know the police will not do anything as the tories have underfunded the police
In some part of the UK, the police don't even turn to people's house being broken into as the police don't have the staff

Yeah people know that the increase in shoplifting is due to things caused by Tories. Cost of living crisis (which they know isn't just Ukraine), cuts to police and social services.
Also they've raised taxes and still shit services, as well as the PPE scandal.
I kind of want them to get a popularity bump off Racist Dave the Plumber, following the conference, so they just call a GE.

If youre talking about shoplifting, dont accept the right wing rebuttal of 'if you see someone shoplifting, you didnt'. They will tell you that its actually organised criminal gangs doing the majority of it, not poor starving people.
Which is, apparently true.
The problem with turning that stone over is; why do organised criminal gangs now feel shoplifting has been decriminalised and can be done without fear of consequence? How has policing been allowed to collapse to the point that the high street is effectively lawless?

And who are the people joining the organised criminal gangs? I assume they aren't the well off. I'd imagine quite a lot of it is to fund drug habits as well. --- Maybe we should have gotten China to build HS2? 1/10th the cost and it'd be open already. www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-66979810

Ive seen people raise that comparison before and, to be fair, the advantage china has is that they can dissappear anyone who objects to it and build it from cardboard, which tends to shorten the lifespan of most building projects..

Even if it is mostly gangs (which I'm not sure if we know or not - I've not actually seen stats on it, only anecdotal evidence presented in reports likes this), that still is a link to people struggling. The black market will see a boost, as more people will go to them when they can't buy from the shops. The gangs are going to increase their supply to meet that demand.
Edit - I believe France's high speed railway cost about a 10th of HS2 as well. In fact, pretty much everywhere is a lot cheaper, with the exception of the USA.

Similar for Singapore. Relative lives out there and have a friend from the area. The summary seems to be "they're building a utopia, whether you like it or not".

I worked in a supermarket aged 16-18. We regularly intervened with shop lifters, including physically stopping them. We kind of saw it as our jobs as well. I ran 400m after a couple dudes that stole cans of red bull to get them back.
The only reason we got a security guard was for when we had a literal armed robbery, and they tried to stab me after a member of the public whacked them on the head with a bottle of juice and they thought it was me (I still helped open the till for a fairly shocked/frozen old cashier). They came back and robbed the shop again two days later. Fat lot of good the guard did (they brought guns this time instead of just knives).
This was also a slightly rougher shop as it was in centre of Amsterdam so there were a fair amount of down and outers and on eg Sunday was one of the only shops in area that sold booze.

So the Great British Growth Rally seems to be where all the insane politicians are today.
Liz thinking we should build 500,000 houses a year enabled by tax cuts. Rees Mogg wanting tax at 20% flat rate for all. Harpers thinking councils want to monitor people and only allow people to drive when the give them permission.
Look forward to the rest of the crazies who seem to want to ban WFH because reasons.

technoishHa, I used to work for Safeways in the uk from 16 and through uni. A Code 100 wss a shoplifter amd all the male employees had to drop everything to chase them down. Used to love it as it was excuse to bunk off for half an hour. I did once point out that having a big chunk of the employees leaving the store might make shoplifting easier but to no avail...

I would assume it's more that there are more cunts visible out there so you don't have to hide being a cunt. Case in point many people really owning their racism and misogyny in the public eye these days.
