Maybe the Met will take a leaf from "Police Academy" and allow people that really shouldn't be cops join the force? Considering who they have let join up maybe having some weirdos in would be better than the some of the dodgy people they've already got.

I know what I want Nigel to get, he probably wouldn't like it though. I know what he should get - a top position on a current affairs TV channel that noone watches, where he can spout his views to his hearts content.

I expect a number of patriotic investors will snap up those dipped shares in a flash to help shore things up for us all and make a packet of money in the long term

I remember reading an article a few months back that a large proportion of police officers are going to have a year or less experience, even if they hit the target. I assume the cost of living crisis is going to boost crime, as I imagine it goes up when the number of people who are struggling for cash goes up. So not a good combination. www.bbc.com/news/business-66323140It does seem that the number of offences for which police don't even attend has skyrocketed. I don't know if that's due to lack of numbers, population growth, policy shift, etc.. I agree that Starmer needs to get out ahead on some of these issues, otherwise he's going to be stuck with the blame when it all gets worse while he's holding the can. (Didn't some statisticians do an analysis of the whole 'broken windows hard on petty crime' thing in the US and show that the *actual* impact was usually caused by the previous administration cutting/raising police numbers?) OT Side note: They have these things in Japan called 'Police Boxes' which are tiny little police offices that basically consist of a front room with a desk+phone, and a back room with a bed. They are almost everywhere in Tokyo, there's one near almost every station, on street corners, etc.. They are usually staffed by 1-2 officers, who then go out on neighborhood bike patrols a couple of times a day/night. I imagine their effectiveness in catching criminals is almost zero, but they do give a lot of reassurance and a feeling of police presence and safety. I often see people in their talking to the police (probably either asking for directions or reporting a lost phone) They seem to be staffed by a combination of new young officers, and older close-to-retirement (bit overweight) officers. I always wonder if the UK couldn't do something similar, maybe as a lower paid semi-retirement thing.

Well the issue is
A - what you make illegal B - what you expect police to do C - population demographics
We've got a mix of underpaid staff, a variety of things being illegal (drugs) and the expectation of police to attend everything.
I kind of get police stating they won't attend mental health calls. That's not what they're there for. Unless there's someone shouting and raving with a gun, the case could be made that attending a robbery/ break in would be better.
I do feel that, as things get worse, you'll see a split in society where the richer will separate themselves and the poorer will get lumped in together.
On a tangent but, also, climate change will massively impact crime. If cars are banned for all but a few people, how would that impact criminals?

And I'm sure they will still be talking about it in 2 weeks time!
The BBC of course was the least important of those in the list. They will just follow along with the others like the yappy puppy that they are.

Glol. If whatever he actually does now doesn't work out for him, he could always do the bingo hall/working man's club comedy circuit.

This shitty government's culture wars are rather expensive. Millions pissed away when 96% of people who responded to the consultation said no to privatisation.

Yeah, but when Nadine says she is going to do something she sticks with it and won't be deterred by the naysayers. Like when she said she was resigning...

Over the last 13 years the Conservatives have caused loads of comedians to give up as there’s absolutely no way that they can come up with funnier, absurder or more bizarre material than the stuff that they’ve been churning out.

Yeah but now they can do Peter Kay's entire fucking awful shtick, like it was 15 years ago. Which for Tories is quite modern.

I dunno.. something about this makes it seem like a backwards thinking knee jerk reaction by a weak leader trying desperately to pander to the right.. BBC News - Sunak orders review of low traffic neighbourhoods in pro-motorist message www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-66351785

It is but I don't think it'll actually get that much support. Health and climate is going to be a big issue next election, now and I think they've been caught completely off guard.

Ffs. That really pisses me off. There's already loonies who dismantle LTN stuff. I'll be so annoyed if this catches on and it gets worse, councils start removing them, etc etc.
They are such a small minor inconvenience in the grand scheme of everything going on and this is just another example of the Tories not doing any actual governing and just going for the populist vote. Desperate is right.

Yep, but it allows the Mail to do Victory For The Poor Put Upon Motorist type headlines, job done.
