I hope so. Although anti immigration sentiment in communities that are struggling is very powerful.

The problem is, it involves a *lot* of people admitting they were wrong and, as a species, we dont like doing that.
The best you are going to get is 'we were right but everyone involved fucked it up'.

A lot of anti Brexit advocates on Twitter claim the mood is turning, but I still see people as polarised. I guess it's difficult to gauge. Just like the "quiet Conservative" is a thing at general elections, I think Brexit is now in a "Quiet leaver" phase. People who realise it was a mistake, have changed their minds, but don't want to shout about it. Possibly this, but I think a lot of it is just bad polling (or bad interpretations of polling). Many of the polls that get a lot of attention aren't actually asking if people would vote differently. They just ask if it is going well or not. When you actually ask if people want to be out of the EU there are still huge numbers that say they want to be out. Likely less than 50%, but still a large proportion.

That's exactly where Leave advocates are. It's a missed opportunity and the government fucked it up. People talk about plans, but you look at the sheer number of contexts that would and have been affected by leaving, the idea of a plan isn't feasible.

Another day and more sobering reality of the impact of Brexit - interesting read about the impact on an independent press and the UK book industry: threadreaderapp.com/thread/1679441618221387776.htmlSo many things impacted by a decision left to uninformed people, I can't see us getting out of this mess fora very long time, the UK is getting left behind. Read that earlier, frightening. Although it did reveal the Estonian e-residency, which is a genius idea.

It's almost as if all that standardized brussels red tape was designed to make things smoother and easier than each country having their own different red tape.

They’ve found the passcode for Boris’ old phone!
So much for security, it must have been written down somewhere then.

On one hand, it's nice to see the government being challenged on putting migrants into former military bases/ camps/ stations.
On the other, it's entirely because people don't want immigrants near them.

Amazing really, inherited wealth is one of the greatest drivers of wealth inequality in the country. This is going to be pitched as 'Labour wants to steal your kids futures!' (despite affecting the disproportionately wealthy). Same as private schools (killing aspiration). They need to get in the fucking bin and stay there for a long time.

I also love one of the other stories is '49 of the best places to eat this Summer,' while the use of food banks goes through the roof.

It's a futile tax really as there are so many ways around it, and most people are below the threshold.
Abolish trusts. Then we'd have fun. Get a job, trustafarian!

Yeah, most of the rich people it was aimed at can find ways around it so it just ends up impacting a very narrow wedge of society that falls in to the prime southern middle class Tory voting demographic. It’s the kind of policy you would have expected from them before they became obsessed with culture wars and the red wall.

Agreed. Most people are below the threshold for Inheritance tax and the very wealthy avoid it through trusts. Close the loophole.
I find it slightly strange but kind of natural that government is essentially set up to preserve and protect wealth.
Interest rate rises have fuck all to do with inflation.
The federal reserve is the de facto central bank of the world. So any interest rate rises the Fed imposes are matched by 97% of the central banks in the world. So what's going on is wealth preservation. If the pound significantly devalued against the dollar, the capital flight out of this country would be huge.

Theres no way it will be axed before an election, or soon after. The finances will not bear it.

The most feared tax that you won’t actually have to pay.
Only 3.75% on deaths in 2022 were subject to it.

I believe Ireland has a good system, from what I remember. Can't actually find the article. There's basically a capital transfers/acquisitions tax with some sort of multi-year window. So anyone receiving that money gets a progressively higher rate to pay, whether the money comes out of a trust, is a gift before death or it's actual inheritance. It'd presumably apply to whatever weird fucking system Sunak uses for his income at the same time.

If it affected me I wouldn’t care about paying a little bit of tax. If be dead and my kids would, by default of the tax being applicable, have loads of money.
It’s amazing that something like this could be considered to win votes instead of doing something that would cost a similar amount but help a lot of people that are struggling.

Until I dealt with my mum's estate, I had no idea it was so high. You just see the headline £375k and think that's it. It's basically a million for one parent left, if the other has left everything to the spouse.

Reminds me the same confusion when Labour started talking about "taxing the rich" when referring to your lifetime pension allowance (£1,000,000)
The average wage is what, £32k a year? If you're alive today you've got a 30% chance to live past 90. If you want to continue your quality of life in retirement, you'll need £1,000,000

My main problem with inheritance tax is that the royals are exempt. Make those fuckers pay and then we can talk about changes for the rest of us.

I’ve a bigger issue that it’s politicians doing it for their own benefit as so many of this government are millionaires.
