Announced just in time to spoil the start of the weekend, the Johnson's are having another kid because more of that cunt's offspring is what the world needs. He’s got some powerful spunk I’ll give him that much.

As someone who does send his kids to a private school (wife got an appointment, sent the boys along and got 1 x 100% and 1 x 50% scholarship), I would still say they dont deserve a VAT break.
And no, I don’t think they are generally worth it for the tuition, as far as I know (know a teacher at the school, and my wife is a teacher in a state school), the actual quality of teaching is worse, or they at least work less It’s just that it is balanced out and more by only having 15 kids to a class and the facilities available.

The Tories are keen to birth more kids. Boris and Carrie: “we’re doing our part”

Isn't the basic VAT idea that essentials are VAT free, but luxuries aren't?
So I guess the question is whether a private school is essential. Given that there are public alternatives, I'd say not.
Or make them VAT free, but add a 20% surcharge that is ringfenced to be spent on state education.

I mean kind of, but then again cakes are VAT free, and I don’t think they’d be considered an essential…

I thought centuries of legal precedent were based on the idea that biscuits were essentials, but cakes were luxuries.
And that Jaffa Cakes were biscuits, and definitely not cakes.
Bloody tories...

Calling Jaffa Cakes biscuits on the frickin' Eurogamer exiles forum should be a capital offence.

Legally, they're biscuits though.

I don’t think that’s true. They are legally caked. Hence no VAT.

Maybe i had it backwards, so does that mean Biscuits are luxuries and are taxed??? That seems wrong.
[edit]
Oh, it's the chocolate on the biscuits that makes them a luxury.

I don’t think that’s true. They are legally caked. Hence no VAT. It’s the other way around. Edit - wait, no it isn’t. I’m going back to bed.

Cakes - harden when stale
Biscuits - soften when stale

They proved it in court by baking a massive Jaffa Cake and then cutting a slice, no one could argue that it seemed to be a cake.
Cakes not being taxed but biscuits are is stupid but then having a tax on foods is pretty stupid anyway, unless it applied to anything processed to subsidise actual food.

That was the speeding fine she asked if she could claim back on expenses as it happened while she was campaigning.

Martin Lewis concisely makes the obvious point that privatisation without competition is a disaster for consumers, Tory MP and Laura Kuensburg talk over him and hand wave the point away.
Sunday Politics in a nutshell.
