Might be worth printing out and, should they come knocking, asking your local Conservative candidate in the local elections if they agree with everything written in it

They really are going to go full tilt culture war at the next election. I can't see it winning it for them, but I imagine it is all about trying to not lose votes to whatever those new UKIP-like parties are. If they can't even get people to vote for them based on cultural conservatism than they will be slaughtered at the election.
They will make everything a lot worse for minorities in the process of doing this, but they won't care about that.

It's the only ammunition they've got left, appeal to the idiots in the same way they did with Brexit with lies and non-existent threats and hope for the best.
Fuck the lot of them.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-65448709Gaudy tat outfit for coronation confirmed. But actual lol at this sentence: "But in a move aimed at making the event more sustainable, the King has decided to reuse the belt and glove worn by his grandfather George VI - the last male monarch." Yes, sustainable. Fucking leech let's the taxpayer pay for his overblown coronation but let's have a fucking meaningless gesture towards sustainability. I'll tell you what's sustainable, abolishment.

I'm more positive about the monarchy than a lot here (mainly for tourism reasons), but there's no way I'm swearing fealty. I can't imagine anyone I know doing it either. The grandparents might have, but they've all passed away yonks ago.

I'm more positive about the monarchy than a lot here (mainly for tourism reasons), I suppose you could interpret these figures on tourism/monarchy as "it would be £500 million less generated if they weren't around" although you could just as easily say "it would be £500 million that tourists spent elsewhere instead", given that there would be a certain amount of clairvoyance involved in such a claim, not to mention that figure itself being of dubious provenance to begin with as they point out.

The argument now is that, if it were remotely true, we have already voted to make ourselves poorer to rid ourselves of unelected leaders, so what difference would it make to do it again?
Also, I went to Blenheim Palace yesterday and they had a display of a load of regalia through the ages. There was the gear Churchill wore to lords and the coronation, loads of old ermine through the ages, princess dresses and whatnot and when you get close it really shows you how all of our fine 'traditions' basically stem from these disgusting robber barrons literally parading their wealth around.
Bejazzling any fabric they can get their hands on, having trains so big they need four poor people to carry them. Absolutely grotesque.

I sit somewhere in the middle. I do think they're a handy thing to pull out for state visits etc. The rest of the world respects them more than we do and, although they're allegedly not political, they can be useful in times of diplomacy.
I also, in my vague brushes with them, have found them to be more human and capable of engaging with lowly serfs than MPs. Certainly in the "important ones" - couldn't tell you about the likes of Andrew or the hanger ons.
There is also the tourism argument and the employment it brings.
I think what I want is much more clarity about the role and for them to not be in the media as much. If they want to leave, they can.

Strangely enough France doesn't have any difficulty getting people to visit their palaces and similar tourist attractions and they executed their royals. It's not like Chuck welcomes everyone with a cuppa when foreigners turn up at Buckingham Palace.
The things people want to see won't be demolished if we got rid of the royal family, they'll continue as relics of the past, just like the Windsors are now.

If we bin off the sovereign grant and make them at least liable and subject to inheritance, income and capital gains tax they can hang around. And the coronations and jubilees and state funerals need to be funded by them, not the tax payer.
Then I might consider letting them hang around.

And, of course, America famously has little to no tourists visit there.

The whole thing viscerally disgusts me but I dont think a terrible compromise would be to let them carry on cosplaying as gods chosen people and keep the proceeds of their pillaging while reducing their status to 'citizen' and have them put their hands in their very deep pockets to fund it. Of course, we should be seizing all of their assets and redistributing their land but whatever.

Then I might consider letting them hang around. Nah, hanging's too good for them, doc... unless we are adding a sprinkling of drawing and quartering, which is far more to the taste of the British royal family (or at least when applied to their subjects...)

How do the Spanish and Dutch fare? They've kept theirs, but seemingly with less pomp and circumstance.

At this point they can’t make much difference to tourism. If they were gone and the properties were fully open to tourism then sure that would make more money than they bring in now.

There is that much quoted graphic that shows royal stuff makes up like 10 of the top 100 tourist attractions and even then there arent many in the top ten.
