Blimey, Rosie Duffield quits Labour. And since folks were discussing Owen Jones earlier, his take is bang on. Basically she’s that “worst person you know made a great point” meme guy Edit- removed the Twitter embed because it’s too much of a wall of text when it’s someone replying to their own quote-tweet Hang on... you think Duffield "made a great point"?

I think I would genuinely get punched (and rightly so) by some of the mums I know if I started going on about maternity pay having gone too far.

If all women married investment bankers they could just resign from their jobs instead of taking maternity pay when they get pregnant like a certain Tory leadership candidate.

I feel like if we created a fake news story along the lines of "Starmer's Plan To Boost Economy By Imposing Ban On All Childbirth For Three Years", we could probably get The Sun to just run with it on the front page without bothering to fact check it.

She really is going for the lowest common denominator. Even talks about the fact that she didn't take maternity leave when at The Spectator and quit instead. Just forgot to add the little fact that her husband is an investment banker though... It’s phrased in a way that suggests she thinks maternity pay is a reason people have fewer children now. Not just lowest common denominator but stupid too.

Let's look at that the developed country that basically doesn't have maternity pay or even leave, (unless you are at a good job), the USA.
Means people often basically just take just 2 weeks leave before going back to work!!! Nuts.

There is absolutely nothing about US labour rights/laws (that I know of) which would be in the interests for the general populace to emulated.

Unfortunately they'll pick the almost sane but also horrible and corrupt Jenrick instead. I don't know about the "almost sane" bit. He is basically just the white and male version of Badenoch isn't he? Hence why he is the only one that would actually beat Badenoch when it comes to the membership votes. When we are dealing with this lot, the best of them is likely Tugendhat, although he is desperately trying to win over the membership by pretending to be part of the crazy crew (and he is never going to win). After that, it would have to be Cleverly, as he is mostly just a bit stupid rather than insane like the others. Shows how much they have fallen when James "I give my wife a bit rohibnol Lolz" Cleverly is one of there best picks.

Hence why he is the only one that would actually beat Badenoch when it comes to the membership votes. except badenoch is quite far ahead in the membership polls* i do think we need to be wary of dismissing tories as racist cunts - I mean they are - but they're cunts first, racist cunts second. The first two female prime ministers the country has had were tory. The first lettuce prime minister was a tory. The first non-white prime minister was a tory. yep they're cunts, yep they're racist cunts. but we do have to be alive to the fact they're pragmatic racist cunts and if the opportunity to be a cunt is best served by putting aside their racism they'll do that
(badenoch 36% jenrick 25% all others 13%)

She is ahead when you poll against all of them and has been for a long time, regularly being voted the favourite cabinet member. When you break it down to head to heads though, Jenrick is the only one that will beat her. Think I saw that polling back when the first potential was knocked out, so may have changed now. And I didn't see all the membership are racist... some are misogynists too

At least someone is forcing us to have these difficult conversations. So, child marriage, yay or nay? My nephew has been married to his girlfriend since they were five. He is now eight. I think they have a great and stable relationship.

Bonkers from Kemi. It's like she saw the Starmer headlines about freezing old people to death and went, hold my beer, what other vulnerable sector of society can I jump on to cause even more outrage...

all that said, i believe the bookies are right on jenrick being the likely winner, just not necessarily for reasons of racism

Weirdly enough I think it was Kemi who called for the Winter Fuel Allowance to be scrapped at her ... one of the many leadership contests over the last few years.

Funny how she conveniently waited until just after she'd be reelected as a Labour MP, with guaranteed party support and finances and assuring her 5 years of MP's salary before she amazingly found her principles. Should trigger an immediate by-election. If she wants to stand as an independent, let her. Edit: and not just in this instance, for everyone who does this.

it is interesting, and some small measure of karma, that - outside the handful who'll land at gbeebies or editing the spectator - they leaned so far into toxic culture wars and "fuck business" that the raft of non-exec director or consultancy roles that'd normally open up to former tories are thin on the ground
i can't think of a place i've worked lately that wouldn't kick off if management announced their new hire as the muppet who's responsible for their mortgage doubling or who spent the last five years calling single mothers scum

Jenrick and Truss both wittering on at conference about having the Star of David at every arrival point in the UK, the Tories are unhinged.

She looks like that bit in Spinal Tap where David St.Hubbins says he'd feel much worse if he weren't under such heavy sedation, except for the actual saying of words out loud bit.

Sorry, it was more obvious what I thought of her before I removed the Owen Jones tweet ffrom the post.

It's funny. But it's also the kind of political 'journalism' that was funnier when Ali-G was doing it. It's not really surprising she ignores him when his first question is basically 'Why are you so useless?' Still, anything that keeps her away from the wheels of power can only be good for the rest of us.
