Boris Johnson : I was surprised by cake! Rishi Sunak : I was surprised by a bet!
You can always say no to something, it's quite easy, you're not Danny Wallace doing a sequel to "Yes Man".
Kwasi Kwarteng has joined the list of Tory MPs not standing at the next election, I guess he'll be working for Tufton Street more openly soon.

I'm just constantly amazed at how shit at politics he is. When he came to power I feared he would give off an air of competence in his shiny suits that would win people over for them to sneak a win at the next election. Somehow though he manages to barely reach Theresa May levels of competence.

His lack of experience in politics is on display every time he says anything, dropped into a safe seat and given responsibility far too soon by the buffoon Johnson then given the leadership when he couldn't even beat the very thick Truss in a contest.
He's really, really shit at politics.

Sad news for sure. I think whatever your position on the monarchy, Charles and the princes have shown up the politicians in power by demonstrating integrity.

Yeah that’s why I named them. I thought of him when I was typing, which I guess highlights the problem with the monarchy

Have they demonstrated integrity, really? Genuine question.

I was thinking about the Environment specifically. Charles seems prepared to make a stand based on his conviction. Elizabeth stuck rigidly to being impartial but Charles has seemed to be prepared to voice his opinions. The sons have also been very vocal on issues they feel strongly about, like mental health. Maybe integrity is the wrong word.

I guess it's easy to voice your opinions when you're born into extreme wealth and you have the sense of entitlement that makes you believe that everyone must hear your opinions regardless of how valid they are

No I know, I was joking. I don’t have a strong opinion on the monarchy, I guess if we’re stuck with them it’s a gamble that could be worse. I’m certainly not going to argue their case because, as I say, I don’t give enough of a shit. You obviously have a strong opinion, which I was joking about.

Whilst I'm far from a royalist, and agree that their privilege makes it easier to speak about things that feel strongly about, on the odd occasion that their viewpoint on something overlaps with mine I'll take it.
I do largely agree with Charles's environmentalism. On the other hand his views on homeopathy can do one.
Somehow doubt the king will be combatting cancer via homeopathic remedies though.

I guess that’s how I feel. As an unelected institution they’re indefensible in terms of a modern fair democratic society.

I like Charles's environmental stance as well. Quite happy for him to be vocal about it. Who gives a fuck if it's from a position of privilege? All privileged people should be using that to inspire.
Else we end up with Musk and Trump, etc. Both of whom have far more impact on the world.

I think it's perfectly consistent and indeed rational to be both anti-monarchy on one hand and quite pleased that Charles uses his position to advocate for environmentalism on the other. It's good when celebrities use their reach to advocate on stuff that matters. As long as I agree with what they're saying. The ones saying stuff that I don't agree with, well they can fuck off.

I think the argument that celebrities should stay in their lane changed with the proliferation of social media. Now that everyone has a platform I think it’s fair that famous people can join the conversation on issues if they feel strongly enough. If what they say is bullshit then that will get discriminated quickly.

My only issue with that takeaway is how celebrities are feted as ALL their opinions matter because of their status and that opinion holds more weight than someone with actual experience and qualifications, you know? Sure if you're preaching for a good cause go for it but it's when it goes further because they've really been huffing their own farts.

It’s also why we have found ourselves in this weird position where celebrity opinions carry a lot of weight which is why they, on the whole, never really say anything.
It’s nice that Charles says things about the environment but, y’know, he’s also in a position to stop his family taking private jets everywhere or stop mobilising a fleet of heavily armoured vehicles when one of them wants to put on a different hat.

God, Liz Truss truly is thick as mince isn't she? That PopCon speech was some of the most disingenuous, right wing bingo garbage that I've ever had the displeasure of reading in quite a while.

Still, being a celeb and using that platform to voice opinions isn't a free pass. Matt LeTissier and JK Rowling to name a couple. When LeTissier starting trying to argue about the scientific efficacy of vaccines he just looked stupid and there were plenty of doctors to discredit him. Joey Barton is another.

I suppose it also gives them the disinfectant of sunlight. She is the least popular politician in the country by some margin so anyone buying into this is going to look like even more of a halfwit than they already do.
It’s just a bunch of out of touch headbangers howling at the moon.

Call me a cynic but I’ve always suspected Charles’s environmentalism was a bit of a PR thing as part of his rebrand a few years back, as a way of making him somewhat relatable to younger audiences.
Whether that’s the case or not, it’s certainly true that his reputation has been dramatically shifted since the late 90s when he was absolutely despised. Feels like that’s long forgotten now but he was one of the most hated men in the country at one point.
