Don't think people are going to "feel the change" in that timeframe. Budgets are all about small incremental changes, compounding over time. Nobody is going to feel, weeks or months down the line, *massively* different with £26.40 more in their pocket at the end of the month. And if they do, they're unlikely to remember it's down to the budget 4 months ago.
Immediately after the budget they will see the headlines telling them "you're better off" and suddenly start thinking the Tories are Strong on the Economy (tm) again.
People are idiots.

Aye, it takes ages for any actual changes to filter through to pay packets.

Their problem is that even if they somehow manage us a few quid better off a month, it’s not going to offset the several hundred our mortgages have gone up by this last year.
Oh, I’m slightly less skint. Thanks.

Yeah it won't work. Plus the income thresholds have been frozen repeatedly, which people won't notice exactly. But much like the mortgage thing any payrise people got won't have felt as impactful.

And it's also pennies. £200 a year just pales into insignificance when energy prices are rocketing.

Remember these people parrot the line that reducing inflation is like a tax cut, if they actually believe that then they're economically illiterate idiots, if they expect the public to believe it they think we are.
Rayner getting grief for calling Tories scum was wrong, she should have called them cunts.

Oh I completely agree, it's madness. As has been pointed out, no one will feel better off, but it's an electioneering calculation.
I find it really interesting that the USA is booming at the minute. I will say, I think the Inflation Reduction Act (unfortunate acronym) is a really good piece of legislation to encourage investment into a green transition. The growth rate of the US has been consistently around 5% for the last year or so.
But is hasn't translated into ordinary people feeling better about the economy, at least not yet.
You cannot just use GDP growth as an indicator of a country's prosperity. You have to look at the distribution of that growth.
Who is that growth going to? Who is it captured by? Is any of it being felt by the plebs (I mean us)?

Reply-swiped: "At university I wrote a satirical article entitled “should the poor pay higher taxes than the rich”. It seems I should have used it as my application to write for the Telegraph."
How do satirists find work when reality is this ludicrous, again?

Or to be a Tory MP, really

The Telegraph is having a normal day. I mean, yeah, it is. I am absolutely begging people to stop treating this shit rag seriously. Its not 'a paper of record', its a billionaire owned, ethical cesspit that will print *anything* to make its investors happy. Its just the Daily Mail with less tits.

I used to read it quite a bit in my 20s. Rarely agreed with it's politics but it was at least serious. Not so much now.

I used to read colleague's copy about 10+ years ago and it was readable, there were some columnists that were clearly fucking mental (Allison Pearson has always been shite) but on the whole, as long as you could accept the Torygraph nature it had, it was fine.
It slowly became a rancid POS once the Barclays took over and now it's a fucking parody.

I suppose its endemic of news in general, but certainly right wing news in that its not really news anymore. We don't get news as much as a parade of the most rancid fuckpigs giving us their paid for opinion on something. Nobody is a journalist, everyone is a columnist and to maintain your bankability your next piece has to be even more deplorable than the last. And since they don't really do journalism, fuck ethics.

Wouldn't normally share one of Hope's tweets but this is rather funny, not only the photos but the claim that the by-election is now likely, considering Peter Bone isn't an MP any more I'd say it's a bit more than likely.

Given the 'moral duty to send back refugees' article the other day, I would say that the Telegraph is deliberately trolling for outrage clicks. Perhaps also yanking the Overton window insanely far to the right. But mostly the former. Mate of mine was previously the Telegraph's Brussels correspondent, IRL he describes himself as a trotskyist anarchist, it would be a much easier way to explain the Telegraph's editorial policy if it were really all about discrediting the establishment and destroying bourgeois society.

Either Sunak is an idiot, or he's hubristically decided that the party's lack of loyalty to him has ruined his chance of making a success of his premiership and has decided to take them down with him. I love the thought that Sunak is playing out The Medusa Touch in his head. "I will bring the whole edifice down on their unworthy heads"
The Medusa Touch also had the line "I am the man with the power to create catastrophe."
Which seems to fit Sunak and this Govt. well

CONS: "We have to put someone on TV today to really make an absolute misogynist arsehole spectacle of themselves, preferably someone who can then be invited back later to make an apology that isn't an apology, but actually just clarifying their awfulness."
Publicist: "Shaun Bailey?"
CONS: *chefs-kiss*
