Hmm - interesting!
Happy-ish with the cheapo Behringer I got last week, at least I can turn things up to non-tolerable levels now, but still seems to lack a bit of "punch".
That said, going back to my old Sony MDR-1Rs as a test, was a revelation - DT770s wipe the floor with them.

Did I tell you the DT770s are my most hated headphone of all time? They're not bad, not at all. But it stems back to an experience I had when I was just starting as a sound eng for TV. In like my second or third week my mentor couldn't make it for one location production, supposed to be simple enough gig with just a piano and singer, no biggie there.
But once I got on location I could not figure out the routing on the desk and ended up monitoring the whole thing with headphones. With the fully closed DT770s that were in the production rack. I figured it went alright, as the singer was very happy with her monitoring and everything a-ok.
Next day the editor gives me a tap on the shoulder "Mate, your audio's fucked." I had cut out almost all of the bottom end because the cans were so much more bass heavy than the DT880s I was used to. I was able to rescue it mostly in post but damn, I swore to never use DT770s again, and I haven't. Mind these were the 80 ohm DT770s with fully isolating ear cushions which gave them just heaps of bass.

The mrs has stolen my MDR-7506 for the same reason. When she is 'on site' they have some b-boy studio monitors in her edit suite and everything is set up plush.
When started WFH the most neutral thing on the rack are the sonys.

Re: 770s, weird, as the "punch" I'm lacking is perhaps a bit more bass with my 250ohm ones.
Seems slightly less guttural than my previous Sony headphones but at the same time can pick it out more in the mix as it's own thing, everything seems a whole lot more balanced.
Now I'm getting curious if my ageing ears would appreciate the difference of a 24-bit USB DAC for Apple Music lossless streams.
(Annoying I ripped my rather large CD collection in the early 2000s in MP3 128k format, wish I'd gone higher and/or kept the bloody discs...).

Might not be the thread for it, but does anyone have any suggestions for a reasonable set of headphones for a 9 year old? He had some wireless £30 Mario ones for a year (broken headpiece, because the younger one sat on them) he’s been happy with, so doesn’t need to be super great quality.
Ideally wireless, and if possible this time have a mic as I can see he’ll be into talking with mates and the iPad/switch/Xbox soon. Budget flexible (again, hopefully not too much. £60 quid or less possible?)

The kids were certainly happy with them, though they have broken a pair standing on them, they aren't the most solidly constructed pair of headphones. I don't know if they pair with consoles, but at the time my boy got into Fortnite the Switch didn't support wireless headphones so I got a pair of these Turtle Beach Recon 70N which I haven't tried myself, but he is certainly happy with. For £25 they seem perfect for a bit of online play.

Earbuds 😱
What should I get? Looking at the Bose QuietComfort - £139 from Amazon, down from £249, part of their early access black Friday deals.
Or, GalaxyBuds 2, £99, again part of the early access deal, 30% off RRP.
Or, great give mind, what else should I be looking at? Budget £100 - £150. I'm no great audiophile, mainly used for radio, podcasts and video calls. So microphone clarity is a must. But my cheap Chinese shitty earbuds are just that. So would like better quality for music.
Does that make sense?
Any ideas, as always, will be gratefully accepted.
Cheers.

The linkbuds s are supposed to be good, too (and can speak for the quality of sony buds in general)

Amazon are selling the Sony WF Xm3s for £99 refurbished (seller is a different company but fulfilled by Amazon, so easy returns if not as expected). Or the 4s are £137 from Amazon Warehouse. Or for the cheaper option, £70 for the echo buds v2 is excellent value by all accounts.

Enough of this earbud chat- I need help with over ears ones. I have earbuds, but they are becoming a bit iffier as time goes on, so I am wondering about trying some over the ear ones instead.
Does anyone have any over the ear headphones that they use for gym/indoor cycling/sport that they'd recommend?
Basically, I want a decent sounding set that can also cope with a) staying put on my head while working out and b) cope with rain if out & about or with sweat pishing aff my heid if I'm using them when indoor cycling.
Thanks!

Thank you guys. The Link Buds S are a good shout. £99. Done deal for my needs.
Over the ear headphones. I got a pair of Lindy BNX-60. Half price, 50 quid at the time - a few years ago now. But Rock solid build, and great clear sound. Never any problems with Bluetooth connection. They must do an updated set by now. Would recommend.

I've had 2 sets of BNX60s fails on me (both under warranty luckily). I'm not sure what caused the first set to break, but I'm pretty sure the second were damaged by listening to them in the rain for 20-30 minutes.

But saying that I'm not sure how often I've got them wet. If at all

Let alone sweat soaking into the ear-pads and goodness knows what else and your head bobbing about when exercising?

I have the latest Sony WF XM4s – don't get those, they sound great, but are fucking uncomfortable. I've been using them for best part of year, but really do hate them a lot. I used to have some Jabra 75T buds and they were super comfy and sounded great tbf, for the price. My GF has nicked them...

Tomo have you tried different tips? Can thoroughly recommend Comply or SonicFoam.

Tomo have you tried different tips? Can thoroughly recommend Comply or SonicFoam. I've not. Was put off by the price tag tbh and I partly feel like the buds themselves are just poorly designed/bit sharp edged. Have you tried them with WF XM4s?

No, I've got the 3s but couldn't get on with the tips provided. Used a set of Comply for a year and now SonicFoam (which are cheaper and you get more pairs). No problems now at all (other than the sonics are a little snug in the case so charging is sometimes an issue). Fully recommend though.

Another recommend for SonicFoam. Using them on my shit, cheap, earbuds. And it does make a difference, sound and fit.

Got some Sonicfoam buds. Stuck em on my XM4s. Instantly feel less intrusive. Jabra buds definitely a nicer shape still but this is a lot better than supplied tips. Real test will be going for a run, but promising signs. Thanks chaps.

Bought the Pixel Buds Pro when they released. Love the size and how they look in your ear. I mostly bought them because I really wanted a nice pair of earbuds with multipoint connection and while that has worked great on the connection side, I've been massively letdown by the lag when using them on my laptop. I hadn't realised that they didn't support the types of codec necessary to get a lag free as possible so if I'm watching any kind of video now they're pretty much useless. Shame as well because as I mentioned, I do really like them.

My sennheiser struggle with two connections. It’s generally alright but two way comms absolutely cripple it, so I have to disconnect a device if I get a call on the other one.
