Part of me is still on the fence but I think I'll wait for a sale. My greatest concern is writing and characters because it does seem very bad and I've seen other game franchises that went from amazing to dogshit in that regard in recent years.
I asked myself if this is perhaps akin to Andromeda, which I still somewhat enjoyed for what it is despite its issues, but that game partially redeemed itself with substantial gameplay improvements. The new Saints Row on the other hand looks like the exact same game as SR3 in terms of gameplay and that's a big problem. It'd be more akin to a Mass Effect Reboot without interesting story or characters but with the same gameplay as ME1 or 2, and that would have zero reason to exist.

My favourite review comment so far is that the dialogue is like it has been written by an AI. Having heard some of it, it's hard to argue.

Looking at the reviews, there’s a lot of shit in there you just can’t patch out.
You can fix the frame rate, the sound glitches and the weird aiming but you can’t patch the game itself being fundamentally shite.

What's weird is that they were told repeatedly the aiming is really bad after they gave media and streamers access a few months ago. They chose to completely ignore it.

It almost looks like this generation's version of Mafia 3 - a long-dormant franchise returns at last, bringing with it the most generic third-person open-world gameplay imaginable.
No mission variety whatsoever; "side quests" that are indistinguishable from the main campaign; and 15-20 hours of nothing but driving and shooting.
At least Mafia 3 had a compelling protagonist, some great voice acting, and a narrative that was worth watching despite the dreary minute-to-minute gameplay - Saints Row seems to have none of the above, from what I can tell.
I'm disappointed for everyone who was looking forward to this.

Same. It’s amazing just how shit it looks actually Like Skill Up said, as we are working with the Ps5 and Series X devs will be working on those and scaling down but here it's the exact opposite and it really looks like it. But yeah that gameplay, you can't patch that. I even noticed that there's not even a cover mechanism, it really reminds me of something like that janky ass co-op game by EA, Army of Two.

I mean, if the gameplay is the same as SR3's, at least it's still better than GTA

Not surprising by their last few games and how little has been seen of the game in the lead up to release but still a huge shame. Will play the almighty Saints Row 2 instead!

Yeah, I can't speak for the writing because I try to avoid spoilers (and these have dumb stories anyway), but the gameplay just looks like Southwest Saints Row to me.

Yeah it's not good. Sold my copy on ebay and only lost a fiver on it, so not the end of the world. Decided to have a couple of hours on SR3 remastered and it's shocking how much better it is. Saying that, I've always enjoyed the first 3 saints games and the third is great fun and far less jank than you think. Plays pretty well.

It's a real shame the update to the PC version of SR2 was never completed, couldn't really be helped when the Volition community developer that was doing it sadly passed away from cancer last year, he was dedicated to get it working properly as the PC port performance was terrible. SR2 was the sweet spot for me.
In the meantime I remembered that the PS5 version of SR3 Remastered is on PS+ Extra/Premium so I downloaded that tonight and have had fun, it certainly looks and runs better than it did on the 360 all those years ago. It'll keep me going until the new one is patched and plunged in price.

Played first few story missions and a couple of sides. To be honest I am enjoying. It is already better than 4 and GOOH. The characters are however not our beloved Saints, they remind me of the crew from WD2, a game which despite never fully engaging with the cast, I love. Obviously early doors so I may well change my mind, I do fully agree that the world is way too empty of vehicles and pedestrians, it does look good however.
...I was still able to make a Stacked Brunette, with English accent...so there is that!

I'm scanning the comments and am quite disappointed that it's not being better received. I had been saving my Microsoft rewards points for it. I guess I'll wait for it to drop in price before I buy it. Guess I had better pay that the Gotham Knights game ends up being good.

So I spent a few more hours in the world and the game is actually pretty much as poor and broken as many (almost all?) reviewers would have you believe. The developers should have totally stuck to the template of 1&2. I managed to get a full refund from Amazon, so there is that

Oof. I always intended to pick up the new one, but I was waiting on a sale. It's always terrible when a publisher moves a developer into a support group for another studio though.

They also just released a big patch. Hopefully not the last but if they get make another then with a bit of luck they actually remember what made the earlier games so popular.
Was no need to change it just reset after 4 went too far.

Was no need to change it just reset after 4 went too far. I think it should have been ground up REmake of the sublime (but buggy) SR2 like RE2 and Mafia. Agree re 4 being too silly, 3 was touch and go in parts also. The 1st and 2nd games were mustard.

Arise dormant thread! The patching and enough of a plunge in price happened for me in Amazon's Black Friday sale (it dropped to 25 quid and had a £7 off voucher if I used a locker for the first time).
I've now put in about 20 or so hours and am actually having a really good time with it, it could still use some attention when it comes to the audio levels (they're very hit and miss) and I've no idea if it will get sorted but there's not the horrendous bugs and glitches that all the launch videos showed.
It's not SR2 levels of awesome (what could be?) but I'm certainly enjoying it. I've even got used to the Millennial buddies of the Boss.

I’m only a couple of hours into it, but it’s cool. Feels like the first two Saints Row, mood-wise. Not too much of the shark jumping of 3 and 4. I don’t mind the boss’s friends at all. They’re not nearly as Gen Z obnoxious as the cast of Watch Dogs 2. City’s a little boring (I’m not super into SouthWest deserts), but still a nice change of pace from every previous entry being in Stilwater.
Not bad, really. Gonna see how the story develops still.

How much of a cowboy Western is it?

It’s not Red Dead in the modern day or anything. You’re still a small gang climbing to the top. It’s set in The West™️, so there’s country bars, dudes in cowboy hats, a country music station on the radio, but overall tone is no more cowboy than something like Breaking Bad or Reservation Dogs, which have similar locations. It feels like Phoenix Arizona circa 2022, basically.
