Is it basically like the books? As when I were a kid the books went: Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers - Grant Naylor Better Than Life - Grant Naylor
Then there were 2 third books: Backwards - Rob Grant Last Human - Dough Naylor
Both of which are sequels to Better Than Life.

I didn't realise that there was a dispute, well not over Dwarf anyway. Supposedly they did fall out, but I thought that Grant was bored with Dwarf, wanted to move on and just left it to Naylor. That's what I understood as well. But subsequently RD continued to have a degree of ongoing success, while everything the one that got bored of RD did died in obscurity from what I could see. Maybe he wanted back on the gravy train? There's not a hell of a lot of reporting on what actually happened out there, so who knows. It could have been very acrimonious

It sounds like they’re going to do separate projects rather than work together again , so probably not too amicable.

I always thought that as soon as Rob left, that's immediately when it lost the humour. I.e. post series 6.
Not sure on why he left though

Interesting news. I absolutely loved Red Dwarf back in the day (well, the 1980s-90s!) but confess I’ve not kept up with the more recent stuff on Dave.
I’d actually quite happily take a new novel from Grant or Naylor - there was a bit of a tendency to stray into just rehashing scenes from the TV series - which was fine when they had some good sci-fi ideas to underpin the comedy, but series VI onwards tended to fall into the “monster of the week” mould and were less interesting.
Anyway, hopefully we can now enjoy some of whatever unfinished business there was!

I remember reading a couple of the books many times when I was teenager (probably when I should have been reading better books). No idea if they still hold up though.
As there is mention of both working with cast separately, perhaps Grant will do an animated series and Naylor will continue with live action. Two live action shows, even if set in parallel universes, would be weird. Or it could be a spin off show that has a different cast, with them occasionally making cameos, but no real other crossover.

Rob Grant was the funny guy, Doug Naylor was the sci-fi guy. This is really apparent in the split of the books, where Backwards is basically a big comedy with a threadbare plot and Last Human is some weird cyberpunk space opera where the only funnies are mostly stuff lifted from old episodes.

Yup, absolutely this. And it's reflected the same way in series 7 onwards just after Rob left

Series 7 to 9 were absolutely fairly devoid of actual good humour, but I must admit having a few good laughs in the Dave series 10-12. They are not quite as good as the original 6 on balance, but are certainly better than the nadir (series 8 in all its awfulness).

It seems quite strange what they tried to do to Doug Naylor, accepting that we don't know everything that went on behind the scenes.
"You've kept the series going by yourself for 20 years, written and produced what was UKTV Plays' highest rated, most watched ever content and they are interested in at least two more specials... There's the door."

Was that a one off? I think it was.

Every time I read something about Grant vs Naylor I feel like I know less about the situation.

I do remember, aged 13, being genuinely gutted when Chris Barrie left and wasn't in much of 7. Comedy has long of been my music and it was like my favourite band breaking up. Was desperate to like 8 as well, I really tried but it was just so shit.
Didn't like any of the Dave output until the most recent series which was... Ok. I do think an ageing dwarf crew that leans into the fact they're all in their 60s could work. It's more likely not to, but it could work. Even the most recent series didn't really acknowledge the fact that they are really quite old now.

The early seasons were very conscious of Lister being the last human being left so it would be fun to see how he would cope with getting old and facing his mortality.
I haven’t seen all the UKPlay/Dave era ones but it does feel like its coasting on the goodwill of those original 6 Grant Naylor collaborative series more than doing anything new.

The project features a young Rimmer and Lister? Well, so did the original series of Red Dwarf.
So we must be talking teenage Rimmer and Lister, or younger. Oh dear god.
Red Dwarf's premise was interesting and funny because of the ludicrous situation the last human alive finds himself in. Anything before that isn't relevant or of interest.

Yeah, I'm very sceptical. I've also not kept up with Grant since he wrote the novel Backwards (which I didn't think was very good), so not sure how excited to be regardless.

The idea of them giving Rimmer and Lister origin stories is a bit weird considering we already know their origin stories - both individually and how they were together - so I’m in the skeptic camp too.
What are they going to show? More boarding school misery and how Smeg & The Heads wrote the Om song?

With it being called "Titan" I assume it's supposed to be the story of how Lister got on Red Dwarf - which, IIRC, was on Titan in the books; he thought it'd be a relatively quick jaunt back to Earth but hadn't realised it was a five-year mission around the solar system first (or something like that).
But I'm still sceptical.

I was never a huge Red Dwarf fan (only saw them in bits as a kid) but I decided to give them a proper go when the dropped on iPlayer.
Safe to say I absolutely love it now. Well, before Rimmer leaves anyway. S2 - S6 is an incredible run.
Seeing the original Kryten for the first time was a bit strange, though!
Also, I'm gutted they dropped the original, slowed down theme tune - absolutely majestic.

I grew up watching it, I even remember watching the first episode, although I don't think I really got into it properly till series 3. But from about 1993 till the end of series 6, I was obsessed; it was my favourite show (maybe getting knocked down a peg by X-Files eventually). I had a friend at school and we'd constantly quote it to each other in what I imagine was very annoying for anyone around us.
I do think it holds up, those first six series at least. The recent Dave stuff was pretty good, all things considered.

I really loved the Odd Couple-vibe in S2 - I'd never seen any episodes when I was younger without Kryten so this was quite surprising.
There's one where Rimmer is mulling over his childhood in a dome outside the ship with some gorgeous music playing in the background. Very touching and some great character work - took me by surprise.

Its probably fairly telling that the two weakest regular series are 7 and 8 where they used writers other than Grant or Naylor to help carry the load.
Back to Earth is kind of its own thing and feels very separate from the rest but X onwards are solid sequels to the characterisation of the crew in 6 and how they’d evolve from the early odd couple stuff to disgraceful middle age.

I've got and read titan and I'm trying to think what actually happens in it. I remember lister trying to scavenge some dollarpounds together and there was some kind of jumping (?) Type of weird taxi thing on titan, but isn't it all effectively just a build up to get him on red dwarf and that's it? Then again, the book is pretty big so I'm obviously missing something else

There’s absolutely a world with a horrible abortive BBC3 Jack Whitehall as Rimmer reboot out there, isn’t there?
