I'm very fond of Series 1-6, but yeah 7 really killed it, with Duct Soup in particular standing out. Didn't mind some of the later series after the hiatus, but by that point I the energy had been lost.
Will say though, I really like the novel versions they did, which felt like they added some extra lore and background beyond the sit com.

The novels Rob Grant had a hand in were great. In general it dips for series 6 then falls apart with 7 and 8. They still have odd moments but nothing really touches series 5 or 3.

I feel like, series 8 in particular, they just lost a lot of what made it great. There'll always be episodes better or worse, fair enough, but bringing back the crew and sticking the gang in prison makes it a different show. Plus it basically wasn't as funny.
Prior to that there was always a creeping shift in the balance between comedy and sci-fi, where the comedy became less wordplay and more antics related to whatever fantastical danger they were in. And I think this was at its worst in 7.
But you know what? I love Red Dwarf, so I'm gonna forget the shit bits and remember all the great stuff.

I’ve never seen one, no-one has but I’m guessing it’s a hwhite hole.

Also the books were great. If you’d told me Douglas Adams had written them I would have probably believed you.

I think the first two books are great - the ones they wrote together. Last Human was a decent enough sci-fi story but lacked a lot of the warmth and humour of the show; and Backwards I felt was really disappointing, drawing on the episodes but not really doing anything new or exciting with them.
I wonder what things would have been like if the film had come together as planned twenty years ago. I think the plot was more or less recycled for the most recent special, dealing with the Cats? Regardless, I had a friend at uni who'd auditioned for a role. I found it very exciting just to know it was in the works, but then obviously it never came to be.

I’d second that on the books. The first in particular is incredible but they fall away fairly quickly because they’re just not as quick or funny as the show and the characters aren’t captured as well as they were in that first again.

I’m going to be honest - I didn’t know there were more than two books. Duly warned, I’ll avoid.

The first two were written by Grant and Naylor collaboratively, whereas The Last Human was just Naylor, and Backwards just Grant. Hence The Last Human is humourless and dull, as it reflects the dramatic direction in which Naylor wanted to take the show (why?). Backwards is funny, but uninspired, likely reflecting Grant's boredom with the whole thing.

Slightly off topic, but Rob Grant has also done some other books. Incompetence being one particular highlight. Worth a read.

The extended scene of Lister humping a vending machine was the end of the show for me. I can't even watch the early seasons without thinking about it.

I ended up grabbing Better Than Life on Audible. I'm literally nearly 30 years late on this but it's amazing. Also reminded how much a talented impressionist Chris Barrie is as he almost completely nails Lister, Kryten, Cat and Holly at times to the extent they sound like the other actors. Nearly at the end now, gutted.
It's also made me very nostalgic for the classic Dwarf days.

Yeah it's cool isn't it. Chris barrie has a lot of talent. In the outtakes of the regular series, the smegups, there's a bit where they're pissing about and he does an amazing Kenneth Williams impression

Obligatory show of love for series 1 to 6 with the recent Cat film, Cassandra and Tikka to Ride as decent enough, but not Red Dwarf proper.
One of the DVDs I have had the American pilot for the show on it, with her from Frasier. Apparently the actor playing Lister nearly getting the part of Joey in Friends (or did he give up the chance to be Joey for Red Dwarf, can't remember).

I can't believe so many people are down on series 6.
Series 7 ain't great (although "Stoke Me a Clipper" is a great episode) but some of my favourite episodes are in series 6, such as Legion and Gunmen of the Apocalypse.
Overall series 6 isn't as good at series 5, but still, it's nothing like the more recent stuff, which is pretty awful.

Wikipedia says American Lister turned down being Chandler. Either way, those are some big cheques he didn’t receive.

I didn't realise that there was a dispute, well not over Dwarf anyway. Supposedly they did fall out, but I thought that Grant was bored with Dwarf, wanted to move on and just left it to Naylor.

It could be like when there’s about three versions of the same classic rock band touring where one line-up has the original singer, another the original guitarist and second drummer and another where its the third guitarist and second singer with the original keyboard player and his son on drums
