Finally the bastard is finished, just need to get a carpet fitter in to re-lay the carpet properly, I might do a write up of what I did, costs etc.

One for the enterprising folks here: makeityourself.org/--- Had a new integrated fridge-freezer delivered and installed this week. Wish we hadn't paid, because the fitting of the cupboard doors to the appliance is shite: when closed, the bottom corner of the freezer cupboard is flush with the plaster.

That's frustrating. I get so annoyed when I pay for something I would have done better myself. I mean what's the point?

Get them back. You've paid for a job and it's not been done properly.

Been doing a bit of a makeover in the bathroom yesterday and today, spent yesterday doing a massive cleanup and clear out in preparation for painting (more like lipstick on a pig than a proper makeover as I'm not sure we'll be staying here long term and we have no cash), anyway the existing walls have like an artex random swirly pattern coating, it's so darn ugly and so uneven, it must differ in height from about 1-6mm, anyway that will go from shitty baby blue to white, the ceiling has been re-coated with some Zinsser Perma anti mould paint, at least that went on well and looks the Biz - it should do at the price, I've done one coat on the walls too today, will need at least another two I think tomorrow hopefully, then the doors/skirtings then a new cabinet & storage unit and a new window blind and see what it all looks like after that. Ideally we'd like to change the floor too but that means lifting the awful fake laminate and underlay, taking off the shitty skirting trims, then adding some plywood + vinyl. Then there's the bath panel ....
And had a £220+ bill last week for dodgy taps/leaky overflows etc.
Fuck houses.

Yeah it's such a hassle. Don't be tempted to sand that artex to try and smooth it out, sometimes the older stuff had asbestos in it.

Anyone had Solar panels installed? Any recommendations? Yeah, 4 or 5 weeks ago, and a big battery. Best thing we've done in ages. Fill the battery and heat the water and the floor with cheap night-rate energy (€0.075/kWh from 2am to 6am), use that all day with solar top-ups on cloudy days and feed-in money (€0.24/kWh) when sunny enough to fill battery again and push to grid. For example, we're pushing 3.5kW to the grid right now in the middle of November, although it's been very mild so the heat hasn't been on much. If your house is in a good position for it, it's great. Edit: as far as specific panels, batteries, installers etc go, it's too early. But the following are working well so far: Jingko 440W panels Sigenergy batteries/inverter

What's your max W? Latitude? 3.5kw is a lot for November!!
I got like 700w at peak from the panels this month from 3kw.

Latitude is around 52⁰N Max installed is 9.6kW. - West: 2.62kW - East: 1.76kW - South: 5.28kW Battery 16kWh (and a gateway switch to run on batteries during power cuts which affected us pretty badly in the past) So a big installation really. House is oriented due south so in the high summer the inverter probably won't harvest everything but it's Ireland so full sun days won't be the norm.

...and especially fuck electrics. 100% this. i've yet to meet a consumer unit i've not made go pop or an earth lead i've not accidentally wired to live. and ring mains! who the fuck understands those! i was once, a gazillion years ago, IT manager for a startup whose employees kept losing laptop power bricks and i had to start making up bricks from old spares - wiring up two in parallel (or was it series, meh 50/50 chance, the smoke lets you know) to form a brick capable of supplying the required current/voltage it was only a small fire. thankfully, i am so legendarily shit at electrics that after many years and many shocks i've learned, in most instances, to call a spark for most things more complicated than changing a light bulb

How many panels in total? 22 x 440W. It pays itself off at some point, but having a long narrow building with the rear facing nearly due south really helps with that. And cheap night rate power obviously, all the equations change if that goes away but it's looking good for now.

Also have a good night rate for the car to charge. Out of interest how much did that system cost?

The extra bits and pieces bumped it up past that and there was a grant involved along the way too.

The extra bits and pieces bumped it up past that and there was a grant involved along the way too. England at 52⁰N has about 10%-15% more sun than here so it's like an extra panel I guess. Dunno how things change with the Southeast orientation. Our heating system is electric too so we went for a beefier option, especially battery-wise. Feels like we'll build up a bit of credit in the summer to cover the winter costs but we'll only know after a full cycle.

Sounds pretty awesome tbf, and exactly the right call as part of a full renovation (?). Payback will take a while but if you're not planning on moving any time soon, you'll be reaping the benefits soon enough.

Yep, that's it exactly, a major renovation that still isn't complete, but the house is. There was lots of misery before getting to this point of ludicrous privilege but that was before and this is nice. Unfortunately it's like I'm in an evangelical sun-worshipping cult now though. I tend to keep rabbiting on about it long past the time I should have stopped. Like now!

I don’t suppose anyone has had any experience of installing a whole house humidifier?
Condensation, esp in the upstairs rooms, is getting stupid so looking to alternatives. Any advice appreciated.

I've heard lots of good things about PIVs. Also suffer a bit but recently discovered the German method - throw open all windows for 10-15 mins twice a day. Theory is warmer damp air is replaced by colder, drier air but not enough time with windows open to cool down the fabric of the buildings and furnishings. Have definitely seen an improvement but also keen on a PIV at some point (which does the same but continuously)
