I'd have thought it more likely to be water running down the chimney? Go into the garden / street and see if you can spot any obvious damage to the chimney stack - missing mortar etc. etc.
Could well be the flashing where the stack meets the roof, but I doubt you'll be able to spot that easily from the ground. Probably worth getting a roofer up there to have a look?

It’s the internal wall between us and next door. It’s pretty thin (certainly sounds it anyway) so I can’t imagine there’s much in the way of piping running through it.
Do I need to find a small boy to stuff down the chimney and take a look?

Cheers, I did wonder if a roofer was the right person, but wasn’t 100% sure they did chimneys or not. I know a guy who knows a roofer guy, so will see if he can take a gander.

So glad I forked out for a level 3 survey for this place. Worth every penny…

To be fair you might be better off calling a chimney sweep - they usually have much more specialist knowledge. With a roofer they may, or may not know what they're looking for with chimneys, although I'd certainly expect them to be able to repair the flashing where the stack joins the roof if that is actually the problem.

I'm not sure this "fits" here but I feel suitably happy with myself after succesfully undertaking my first soldering project.
I fixed the rb/lb switches on my elite series 2 controller and it worked. I did it yesterday which was possibly the worst day of the year to be holding a 400'c soldering iron in my hand and struggling to desolder tiny pieces on a tiny board but I got there in the end (after the kids went to bed).
Appears to be flawlessly working.
Edit: Sorry flawless isn't fully correct, I must not have aligned the controller profile switcher button correctly before reassembly which is enough of a ball ache that there is no way I'm opening it up again to fix. The button technically works and I use it almost never so I'll live with it.
It is gnawing at my brain though...

Just spent a few days doing up the eldest's bedroom, really little more than a lick of paint but looks much better, got a carpet cleaner bloke coming in tomorrow then we can put his room back together. We've left the hideous woodchip on his walls (he doesn't care), think it will be the bathroom or ground+first floor hallways next. I fucking hate DIY, think I'm realising we bit off more than we should have moving here, there's just so much to do and I just haven't got the inclination. Come end of July Mrs Mercury and the sprogs are off to some hideous holiday park for a week so I get a whole week to myself to finish the Ikea shelf carbuncle and live like a bachelor for a week. I can't wait.

A couple of panels on my shed/summerhouse have rotted through and I've covered up the hole over the winter. Finally got around to ordering some shiplap to replace it. Arrived yesterday and my famous DIY skills came to the fore again. Firstly, I ordered from B&Q in a rush and didn't realise they came in packs of 5. I now have at least 10 boards too many. There's a bit more patching up to do but not that much!
And then realised that they're slightly narrower than those I'm replacing. It'll be fine as it's by a cm or two but fairly typical of my approach to this sort of thing.
Now just need to find a way to attach them - they are below a small patio that the previous owner put in after building the shed but a small gap between the edge of the patio and the shed. Can't get a hammer in between. I suspect it'll need to be no more nails initially and then fudge something.

Loft insulation question:
Got a quote to:
Raise the floor in the loft to fit either 200 or 270mm insulation. Raising will be done with new wooden joists rather than those plastic risers.
Whole floor (roughly 30m2) will be boarded. 25 odd vents added to the liner in the ceiling to improve airflow and c. 20mm insulating sheeting between or over ceiling joists.
Quote was £3500 for 200mm and £3660 for 270mm and another c. £500 for the ceiling vents plus insulation.
Sound about right? This is Brighton, so includes the Smug Tax.

DougsFunnily enough, my Dad bought too much shed stuff a few years ago, and that's why his shed now has a small wheelie bin storage enclosure bolted to the side of it.

I don't know the cost of anything anymore. Everything seems extortionate for what it is. Had to have a new shower unit, screen, splash panel, taps and bath panel. £1600 for a day and a half's work.

That's a good shout, might be able to craft something. Will need some battens but otherwise have enough to construct something of a reasonable size.

The guy seems a decent sort and has good reviews so I figure I’m going to go with it. At the moment we have about half an inch of patchy, old insulation so I figure it’ll pay itself back soon enough.
And we’ll finally be able to organise all the shit up there so we can actually access stuff rather than staring at a looming pile of detritus we can’t bring ourselves to throw away.
I must be old because I’m genuinely quite excited by the prospect of doing this and finally adding shelves to the under stairs cupboard of doom.

Welp. That is insane. But yeah, agree, does feel particularly difficult to get a sense of any prices these days. I'm going to get quotes for someone to install a new fence in our terraced garden soon. Fully expecting it to be at least a couple of grand. Sigh.

If you are in any way fit and capable fencing is a good satisfying job to take on yourself. It needs few specialist tools, relying more on sweat than anything else. Digging the holes is the hardest part, getting the thing level the second hardest. Once you're in a run of panels it's a piece of piss

Got to replace the fencing at the bottom of my garden. Posts are fine, just need the battens and featherboards. Problem is it's so overgrown on the neighbours side (no mans land behind a garage - with bind weed, absolutely hate it) and i can't get down there to clear it properly because she's having building work done and has blocked access.

What an absolute nightmare that turned into trying to reproduce matching skirting boards with a router without a router table. I had to 'improvise' to do some of the cuts, now I understand why a router table is an essential bit of kit for these kinds of jobs. Anyway nothing a bit of filler wont fix, the skirting will be out of sight behind the sofa anyway so no one will see but I will always know.

Yeah, I fitted skirting boards recently and the walls weren't even that wonky. Tricky job. Leftover bag of my dad's plaster and plenty of Easifill was the order of the day. Came out looking nice in the end.

Really struggling to get decent quotes for a new front door. It's made more complicated by that the previous owner had the genius idea of ripping the entire frame/door out, and all we have is a front porch.. open plan gone mad. I suspect some of these locals can't be arsed with the hassle.

Continuing the slog on the shelves, finished the skirting yesterday and started on the surrounds today which I may finish tomorrow in between the usual Saturday dad crap, shopping and dads taxi etc. Then I can get the filler/caulk out and fill the all the screw heads and (ahem) the skirting and then prime and paint the lot. The end is in sight!

bits of wood joined at right angles isn't exactly the most technical bit of construction on this thread...
grab rails for wobbly parents who don't want the house to look like the house of a wobbly parent festooned with those white steel tube grab rails
staircase handrails just ran horizontally throughout hallways etc rather than up the stairs. the favourite son pays attention to part K building regs* and returns the rail into the wall rather than leaving it poking out primed to catch cardigan pockets sending elderly parents tumbling and incurring scowls from siblings at the coroners court
* "Finish the end of the handrail in a way that reduces the risk of clothing being caught." - technically this only applies to public spaces and not private dwellings but that distinction may not be appreciated after eight hours in accident & emergency
