Aaaand that’s all the downstairs plasterwork done and looking pretty swish. We’ve handled all the concerns about rising damp by I’m sorry what was that you’re breaking up dreadful line remember to ask me tomorrow.
Next, the floors.

This morning I had two old pallets. Now I (almost) have a mud kitchen. Missing a few bits, but had fun doing it. The kids will love it even if it's a bit big for them at the moment. (I might have to cut those legs down a bit)

Nice. I made a BBQ stand out of pallets the other year. Way better than the compatible stand with the bbq itself.

(I might have to cut those legs down a bit) Love this! I did something similar during lockdown (with a backboard painted with chalkboard paint), had to upgrade it a little last year as it was weather beaten and needed a bit more love). Great use of pallets!

Looking at potential places to rent, saw this place. That plastering near the door frame would drive me insane. Why have they left it like that. Why.

Haha, what a half arsed job. That's like something I'd do...
"Fuck it, I'll finish that wall later." 2 years later... "Hmmm, I should really get around to finishing that wall."
I can imagine it'd be a pain in the arse due to the wiring and probably having to take the rad off, so it's absolutely something I'd put off doing.

I think that's a "feature"

What if you blended the edges then claimed the uneven wall was due to it being a period property?

My guess is they wanted to expose all the walls and have found a multitude of pipes and wires behind that plasterboard and gave up?

Looks like drop down main cable in trunking, probably drop down rad pipes in the plaster and they’ve covered those with a feature wall

Thought I'd better show willing and do something helpful DIY related so started the annual pressure wash, at least this year I've actually had a massive sweep up/de-weed beforehand so that should hopefully lessen the whole crap storm that ends up covering everything. Just picked up (or had delivered) a free carpet for the eldest's room but the room needs painting beforehand so that all needs doing pretty soon as it's taking up a load of space in the garage.
One of these days I'm gonna have to face my nemesis .... my IKEA shelves hack.

I pressure washed the back over Easter but am putting off doing the block paving drive. It makes such a mess. The eldest wants to do it but I know he'd get bored and I'd have to take over and I just can't be arsed. Think I'll just de-moss it and leave it.

I really need to clean my drive, we had some work done when we first moved in and it's left the tarmac in a bit of a state. Thing is it's shared with our elderly neighbour, and while she's pretty cool about the state of it, I'm still pretty ashamed of how it's been left. Will pressure washing it clean it up? I often think about using that tarmac refresher on it, where you kinda paint it on, but some bad reviews put me off as I don't want to make it worse than it already is. Something like this one for reference www.diy.com/departments/sika-black-tarmac-restorer-5l-jerry-can/5055492703019_BQ.prd?storeId=1027

Depends what has marked it really. If it's just muck and grime from builders etc, a jet wash might sort it. It's not going to hurt anyway...

So did the whole front of the house, driveway, gate fronts, pathway, steps and big area in front of the house. Will do the side and rear next weekend weather permitting. I do wonder if there is some product I can put down that will stop it getting so shit every year so perhaps I can do it every other year instead of every year?

Wet and forget seems to be the product of choice instead of pressure washing. But dunno about prevention.

because I'm smart and good at economy i figured investing 3 hours, some scrap, couple of welding rods, half a thimbleful of blood, and a peppa pig plaster, was a better plan i might have made a knife crime, albeit one limited to shivving people round corners handle is salvage from an old garden furniture set - i think sapele - mild steel blade is hardened with a blow torch and a bucket of water, ie barely so far it's proven Tougher Than A Dandelion, coincidentally also my wrestling name

Another fuck around/find out. Noticed that I had a small leak under the downstairs shower. Wasn't massive but enough that when the plumber serviced the boiler, I asked him to take a look. He couldn't see anything immediate with the waste trap but sealed it up and hoped for the best. Unfortunately that made it worse and puddles were definitely forming.
He had suggested knocking the front of the tiles off at ground level to see if we could see the problem. Have just done that, and OMG. The entire frame that the shower is sat on is basically rotten so now we're in new shower tray and door territory at least. Dread to think how long it's been like that or how much damage it's done to the floor. Gah!

Shower tray out, smashed to pieces with a sledgehammer. Issue was a perished fitting to the waste pipe. But no way of fixing that without ripping it all out. Was minging.

That's grim Dougs. Some of our kitchen electric sockets have packed up, seems a bit weird that some are still working that I would have expected to be on the same circuit, anyway electrician booked for sometime in the future. Could be plenty worse, just have a few extension leads dotted around now to keep things up and running (air fryer included ).

I helped my dad replace a shower unit in my parents house about two years ago, the biggest issue we had was having to carefully chip away at the tiles either side of it to make it fit as the new one was slightly larger.

Biggest issue is the upstairs shower is fucked too! Waiting for a quote for that. Will let it all dry out, rip out the rest of the rotten frame and then get the man in to fit it all. Assuming we can find a shower tray the same size...

Anyone have any experience in dealing with mice? We’ve got some in the loft and they getting down into the boiler cupboard and kitchen cabinets. Had a guy round yesterday who said there isn’t too many of them, which is good, but we need to deal with it.
We did catch one the other day in one of those ‘humane’ traps. Cute little bugger he was. Released him into a field a couple of miles away. The guy was horrified by this. Said that’s not humane at all. The mouse will be scared, have no food, shelter etc. The humane way is to kill them instantly in the traps.
My thought process was releasing a wild animal back into the wild at least gives it a chance, but I guess I can see his point. I just dont like the idea of seeing and disposing of dead mice. Apparently there is no real way to stop them getting in as the holes they get through are so small and could be anywhere.

Yeah, house mice are are dependent on living close to humans, they aren’t really wild animals that can survive in a forest or whatever. Poison doesn’t really work, traps are the best way to get rid of them. The spring traps can sometimes work if you’ve got dumb mice, they’re usually too clever. If that’s the case then glue traps are by far the best bet but you need to be prepared to get out of bed at 2am and put the poor fucker out of its misery with a hammer. It’s either that or let them settle in, shit behind the furniture and piss all over your kitchen counter

only the ones the cats bring back on play dates and always went the humane trap + back out in the garden
not sure i entirely trust the logic of the pest control guy re humanity of humane traps, but if they're nesting in your loft then it's beyond setting a trap or two down at a time i guess
