Do you mean like a Saniflow pump, or a kitchen grinder waste disposal unit? Just how gnarly are your baths?

I'm building some rudimentary shelves and coat rail in the under-stairs cupboard this weekend, why do women needs so many bloody shoes? And why is it only my fat man newish wetsuit and a really nice summer coat of mine have been moth eaten and all the others are OK?

Lukus A lot depends on the access I would say. Are you replacing the plughole too?

Moths go for the lovely nutrients and essential oils from your skin.

Yeah access is the kicker on baths, it's a pain and fiddly with very limited space. Getting things to align and watertight will have you swearing š

you must be getting sick of it simple remain glad you're not at risk of being exploded The BG engineer today even agreed that the smell could be a damaged seal or problem with backdraft on the exhaust flue but because it was reported as āsmell of gasā he had to do the full line check. Anyone who ever wants to buy a doer upper should have to consult a medical professional first.

Access isn't great but it's not terrible. Like you say, I think getting a good seal will be the tricky thing. Pretty sure I'm going to wimp out and get a pro in.

Silicone is your best mate when fucking around with drainage. Curious to know why you want to change it though

I know the stresses you talk about and you've said about the Mrs's mental health so do take a breath when you can (as long as it's not full of natural gas) Whenever I'm talking to a client doing a big renovation or similar I ask them 'how do you eat an elephant?' The answer of course is 'one bite at a time'

Also if either outlet has been siliconed in it will be an awful job. Normally they're not but the odd time I've redone stuff or fit new wastes I've always siliconed them in.

The answer of course is 'one bite at a time' Given the age of the boiler, the fact that weāre going to need the floorboards up to repair or re-pipe back to the boiler and that the boiler has already started to break down weāre thinking maybe its time to just take the nuclear option and have a new boiler and piping done as a single job that (should) see us through for a good few years into the future. It does feel unending this year though: - leaking roof and dispute with original contractor - boiler breaking then post-repair gassing the house out - damp proofing and insulating the kitchen. Went well but still a hassle to live around. (kitchen is a converted garage so this had been in the diary for awhile) - replacing all the internal doors downstairs. Purely for decorations sake but we did need to sand and plane all of them go fit ourselves. - wooden panelling on kitchen walls. Again purely decorative but some minor carpentry required to get it all fitting right. This is still ongoing. - moving allotment plot, digging out raised beds, taking down, moving then reassembling the shed, getting as much burning done as possible before the Good Friday cut off date. It really feels like weāre still waiting to start 2024 once all this shit is out the way.

Under our bed, on the backs of doors in those organiser things, on shoe racks in the porch, in units under the stairs, in wardrobes, etc, etc. We even have entire bookcases full of shoes, not books, shoes If I ever commit murder it'll be because of shoes.

Well done now, in an effort to literally spend no money on the shelves (not because I'm tight but because I have accumulated the various shelves/timber for free to do such projects) apart from consumables (ie screws, wear on tools etc) it was a bit of a bloody headache frankly, fitting bloody great shelves into an L shape not on brackets but on their own timber ladder supports, in between all the crappy domestic dad shit and kids who cannot play together, an Easter egg hunt in the forest (this will definitely be the last one) and other crap. Still got the coat rail to install but that's for tomorrow. At least all of Mrs Mercury's unused shoes can now be seen clearly and more easily dusted.

We came home last night to water all over the (thankfully tiled) downstairs loo floor. Damp patch on the wall, the whole caboodle. We know thereās a problem with the toilet flush that basically turns the cistern into a fountain but I thought I had jury-rigged a fix for that.
However this morning the water had vanished, even the damp patch was dry and normal. I have decided I hallucinated the entire thing, for cost-efficiency reasons š

The roof repairs have started this morning. Shouldāve been last week but weather got in the way.
Replacement boiler being delivered tomorrow for a Monday installation.
No more soggy hypoxia for the simple family.

They did one end of the house yesterday and the bucket we have on the loft stairs has stayed dry despite rain all night. We might finally have someone competent on the job.

They'll still leave all their mess for you to pickup though I talked myself out of doing the skirting boards, until we decide to do the living room floor.

Sooo, smoke alarms went off (on?) at 4am today, no actual smoke/fire. Stopped for a couple minutes, went back to ringing. Couldn't find which one was initiating! Happened a few more times. Now nothing and all is quiet again... wtf!

bit scary techno guessing they're all mains linked so you can't take batteries out of one at a time to narrow down the culprit?

Smoke or heat alarms?

Post by technoish on Apr 6, 2024 7:45:31 GMT
Yes mains linked, all optical except kitchen which is heat.
I wondered if it was kitchen one so took it down and there was loads of muck inside including cobwebs! The manual does say spiders can cause false alarms... so I'll need to give them all a clean out.
