I had another chap around to quote for a wood burner. When I asked about the cost of the fake chimney breast, he said that I should do it myself. He has clearly not seen my handiwork.

I just bought some Ring bits and bobs on sale this week. We are moving house, so it's a blank slate. They've got a traditional alarm system, but it's also Year Zero on smart stuff, so I can put some thought into it, and not have the hodge podge of stuff we have at the moment. Not sure whether our buyers will want stuff left. I was looking at Simplisafe, but they got a tanking on its sub-reddit. Other than that it looked OK, so maybe just moaners! What were the reddit complaints?

I also plumped for Ring too. Think what twisted my arm was combination of price, really good Which review and knowledge that the software will be pretty good. Minus for sending all my data to Amazon, but they probably know everything about me already as a Prime customer

I've managed to scrounge a load of free wood from work, got a week off next week and I'm going to build myself a kitchen. This could all go horribly wrong. My Dad did this in the 80s. We still have a laugh about it. I'm happy to continue the tradition of half baked dad projects

I think a "reclaimed pallets" theme could be good for a kitchen.

You need good WiFi for the cameras, but really that is a problem for the other wireless systems also. My ring doorbell cam has had the same issues. On the subscription / app limitations thing, that's fully clear going in, so was only ever a consideration as part of comparisons between systems. Basically, don't get the system if you don't want the ongoing service. There are other DIY systems that can do that. As the big brands have caught up, maybe Google nest is now a viable option for home security system. But it wasn't three years ago.

My Dad did this in the 80s. We still have a laugh about it. I'm happy to continue the tradition of half baked dad projects On this theme, the folk that not long bought the house behind us appear to have retro-fitted windows into the shed by the dividing fence. By using a jigsaw and cutting by eye. It looks *terrible*. Shoogly lines are not pleasing to the eye at all.there must be filler everywhere inside, or leaks & gaps aplenty. Not Recomededed.

Finally finished the pallet wood shoe rack, actually looks OK, only taken about a year. Now the garage is clear of that junk I can start on the Ikea Billy bookcase hack, basically 'built in' shelves across a whole wall in the living room but essentially Billy bookcases fixed together, I will post pics of the disaster that ensues ....
/probably in about a year.

Sounds less like a hack and more like using the product as it was designed to be used

No because once it's finished it will look like a seamless wall of shelves with no evidence they are Billy bookcases in a row or that's the theory. It's still quite a bit of work especially as you have to reinforce the wobbly back panels that Billy's have and fill all of the spare shelf holes and seamlessly join them all together and repaint the whole thing too of course but much easier for an unskilled muppet like me. I'm not the first.
A bit like this although we've got the extension bits on top so the shelves will go up higher than this:

Painting veneer is a bitch tho!
I've done it in a IKEA cabinet, to match the wall colours.
Good luck!

Geezer behind is still working on these shed windows. It looks slightly more weather proof. But very much an iffy DIY 'bodge' job, it's definitely not a 'hack'.

I’m expecting nothing less than a Greene & Greene-style work of art, Goban.

At the end of our house build when monies were getting tight we used OSB3 for our utility room worktop, sandwiched two 15mm boards together to give a thicker 30mm top, sanded then filled any gaps and dints before a final polish and lacquering, it did come up looking quite nice. Needed to do it with a belt sander though as the orbital was taking way too long. I think for a working kitchen worktop it may be a little soft unless a little care was taken with placing hot pots down etc.

I'm using marine ply and ceramic tiles for my work top, with a brass edging strip.
