Now... Given a friend got his bathroom done (similar size) through Wickes a few years ago and that was 6k all-in, that seems like a pretty reasonable quote (based on bathroom at least).

Bite their hand off IMO, assuming they're good/trustworthy. All fittings on top presumably?

Yeah very trustworthy. Done two friends' houses. Seen one of those kitchens. Looks good. Also got him on WhatsApp. He's been sending me WhatsApp photoshops of my kitchen with lines representing where doors will go etc lol

Shed progress over the weekend. Should've took more photos really but these are all the ones I've got. So have now insulated the walls, roof and door with 30mm Celotex and covered with 12mm OSB. Getting it done FAR cheaper than I thought it would be. The OSB from Wickes was going to be about £240, my friend was able to get it from the place they get wood from for their company and all in all, it cost me £80. Just put the TV up to work out the height when I had my bike in there and pretty happy with how much space I'll have left over. Still need to do a few more coats of paint, the electrician needs to come back to install the sockets and light. Need to put some blinds over the windows, or use some tinted sheets, undecided on that part. Then I can put the extra thick gym tiles on the floor, a shelf bellow the TV for my laptop/docking station and a picture frame shelf along the wall so I can have my phone and water bottles whilst I'm on the bike. Enough space to the left of the TV to hang my partners bike and put the fan. Not the fanciest set up, but it'll serve it's purpose for a couple of years

With a low ceiling like that for zwift, you may be needing multiple fans or it'll be doubling up as a sauna too!

Currently having our bathroom done by Wickes. Costing about £8k all in. It's a pain in the arse having to pay wickes tax on absolutely everything, but as there are apparently no reliable tradesmen west of the Tamar it has to be done.

8k is not bad. We were 10 a few years ago to get bath & shower ripped out and all facilities moved around plus a load of kingspan shoved into the walls too. That was with 'spensive stuff to keep the missus happy too though!

Put the trainer outside and watch the screen through the window 😀 Nice idea! Tbh, I would really like the opportunity to do that with our concept 2. We can kind of turn it around and lug it through to be by the patio doors, but it's a bit in the way there. Would love space for decking so we could roll it outside on a nice day, but there's a wall too close by for that.

Put the trainer outside and watch the screen through the window I'll probably scare the neighbours with how sweaty I get and my choice of words

Just had a quote to get my loft boarded. Not cheap.
Have a horrible feeling Mrs Shark’s dad will insist on doing it for cheap, but I really think it needs a pro. Anyone had any experience doing it DIY?

Just boarding the floors to use it as a storage space? It’s not complicated, you’re just laying plywood down on the ceiling joists

Except it will probably have to be raised to ensure the insulation isn't compressed, which makes it a little more complicated.
I'd get more quotes. It requires some skill but not anything particularly technical and there are so many people doing it.

Honestly don’t want Mrs Shark’s Dad to do one of his “I can do that” moments and then shit myself every time I need to go up there. Would be yet another reason to dread Christmas.

In the realms of DIY land I'd say the skill level required is fairly low, it's money for old rope for the outfits doing this kind of thing. It's merely fitting some joists on top of your existing ones and fitting some boards on top, it needs a saw, rechargeable drill, some screws and some boards.

Really easy. Just run some new joists perpendicular to the existing ones and screw in the sheeting. No need to even tie the new joists.

And mark the location of cables and pipes on the top of the board to make life easier at some point in the future.

You don't even need to run new joists, you can get loft legs from wickes, just screw to the joist and then screw your board to the top of them. The only thing to be careful of is making sure they're in the right place when joining boards etc.
Depending on the size of your loft & access, they're a lot easier to get up there than joists!

As henroben says, there are loads of systems available for just such a job. Don't go cheapest as you need something fairly sturdy, but it wouldn't be beyond the realms to DIY. If you are at all competent.
I would imagine getting all the shit out the loft (if it's anything like mine) is the bigger job. Again, with the little peg feet system, you can do it in stages.
Post pics of your arse hanging through the bedroom ceiling when you inevitably miss your footing on a joist!

The feet option is not as good as it won't spread the loads as well as new cross members.

It also requires a bit more precision. The joist solution has got shit loads of tolerance for bad workmanship.

Personally, I'm not sure how far "bad workmanship" and "the things that hold up your roof" really go together, but it's not my house, so.

The feet option is not as good as it won't spread the loads as well as new cross members. They are specifically designed to do exactly that. How can they spread any load? Is that what it says in the spiel? Each foot creates a point load, so stand on your boards in the loft above one foot and all of that load will be transferred through to the single flimsy ceiling joist immediately below, whereas with cross members you'll transfer the loads into two or three ceiling joists.

I suppose if you're going to hold ballroom dance classes up there, you might need to worry about the swl of the supports, but if it's just for storing some boxes, they will be fine.
You use the correct number for the area you're boarding, put them quite close together and can move them about until they're in the right place, that's how they balance out the weight.

i guess the point load at the leg foot is spread via tensile load on the boards fixed above? dunno, not an engineer. did the loft reboarding with legs a while back, partially documented in this thread a dozen or so pages back. Can't say we've noticed a problem, and there is *a lot* of weight stored up there, but famous last words and all
