Getting my flat roof on the loft extension redone on Monday. Got a few damp stains over the winter, sent a man up yesterday and it’s properly fucked. Amazed it only started showing now

Having some pretty big work done; having my whole roof rebattoned and refelted (keeping all the same tiles) and have the whole house repointed (with quite a few bricks replaced) too. 5.5k. 😭 Out of interest, why are you having it redone?

It’s felt now and we need it fixed quick so doing felt again. Fingers crossed we’ll be moving in a year so loathe to throw too much money at it

Fair enough, otherwise I'd suggest something a bit more durable.

My felt has deteriorated about 1 to 2m both sides, and the rest has gone brittle (not to mention a massive tear) all the batons are rotten and the roof has sunk slightly. With the bricks, my corbels are breaking away from the house (front and back) quite a few have blown and alot of the mortar has come out. Tbh I knew the bricks needed doing when I bought it, about 2 years ago (it has gotten worse) I've also managed to convince them to remove an old gas flue in the attic as well. It's actually all happening tomorrow! 😅

Absolutely nothing wrong with felt if done well, GRP is very weather dependent and issues can arrise with insufficient fixings in the deck, EPDM if DIYing.

Sure it didn't just need realignment?! Good job minimatt . Only done click laminate, which was frankly a ballache. Looks very nice indeed. Stop it... He gave me the old one, corroded to hell. Anyway, that was 15 quid. The 89 for labour was the more biting part.

Sure but £89 is for him to make a living.

OK, it's sat there for a week, despite me paying extra for expedited delivery. I am going to change the element in the oven.

Kitchen is nearing completion. All units in and now it's just wiring and some tidying up to do. The missus has to choose some paint and that'll get painted over the weekend. Sweet. Sadly the extractor fan is switching on & lighting up, but not sooking like it should, so we need a Bosch engineer to look at it. Should have gone Miele... if only I was a high roller like elstoof and PES. Family room renovations are a bit of a state. The ceiling is down, so no more woodchip \o/ revealing there was only about 1cm of insulation up there previously and the remains of a big wasps nest from a few years back keeping any heat in. Sticking in 10cm of kingspan before boarding it out for the plasterer to come next week. Which should make the extension significantly warmer in winters to come! On schedule for finishing next week when all the cleaning and other shit will happen. The less said about the expense of flooring the massive area in both areas the better. That won't be ready for another 6-8 weeks yet, so better not spill too much once we get a fully operational kitchen next week. It's nice to get shit done and improved, but we're only 5 days in and I am getting a bit fed up with all the upheaval already- it better be worth it!

To be fair though, in our fully Miele home system we’ve needed, in the last 6 years:
New induction hob circuit board (known fault covered under warranty) New oven clock section circuit board (2 tech visits, about £400 quid to replace) New washing machine circuit board (almost £500 to replace)
They make good appliances but the circuit boards seem to be quite shit

Don't mention induction hobs to me just now. Missus announced last night that none of our current pans are suitable for the new induction hob.
So on top of all this building work, we now need some new fancy pans. Bah. 😱😢😂

Aren't there are a few do's and don'ts with regards to how much heat to use on induction hobs etc etc?

on the bright side you now have an excellent excuse to upgrade your pans. Induction is fantastic, I’d never use anything else now. Luckily most of our pans were steel anyway, copper is a pain in the arse and aluminium are usually shite

They were fairly old and had been decent, so I don't begrudge it. Although I am using it for teasing her at spending more money- my word kitchens have gone up in price since we moved in here 18 years back. Although it is better quality shit we're buying this time so should hopefully last better too. On the plus side, my nice coffee machine now gets a unit of it's own that also looks likes it will double up as the booze cupboard. Which is a fair bit larger than the last area we had. Might be time to invest in some more shit for making cocktails etc

Stick a vapour barrier up on the warm side of the insulation before new plasterboard

I don't miss carting Miele products around in my days in white goods.
We always used to joke that if you ran a tank into one of their washing machines, the tank would break first.

The washing machines are beasts for sure. No need for a poxy concrete slab to weigh it down

Any recommendations for where to buy windows and type even?
I’ve someone to fit smaller windows and do the brick work but said he’d leave it to me to buy what I want. I’m changing the size to accommodate an en-suite

We're getting quotes for cloakroom bathroom under stairs, new kitchen, new bathroom and bedroom en-suite atm... In London. I'll let you know how sore my anus is soon. Me too, for exactly them four things so it will be interesting to compare. The thinking is to do the En-suite first. So, got quote back from very friendly, even slightly fruity, builder that a couple of friends have used. So far labour costs only. He's provided extensive itemised list of stuff to do. Summary costs: - kitchen = £3800: rip out/install new kitchen/do everything + knock wall through where necessary - cloakroom WC = £1800: including new soil pipe to kitchen - 1st floor bathroom = £3200: rip out/put in new one - loft shower room = £1200: re-tiling and touching up - repointing at rear of house (1 wall, first floor) = £800 - install new boiler/rip out old water tanks and cylinder = £1200 Total = £12k
