My brother in law did the same last year. With double doors to the garden and an office in one part, it cost them £18k. cheers. A bit more than I was expecting to be honest but then that includes new double doors and an office in part. I might try and do part, such as panelling the walls and pay for someone to do ceiling and doors. Need to keep some money for the actual av side!

Missed other posts! Cheers all. Yeah, clearly need to put some more thought into this and start saving for an expert. It is just stone floors with I suspect poor damp control etc.

So the new kitchen is under way, everything ripped out, new doorway put up. They also took out the outside tap as they're going to move it slightly.
Then this morning the plasterer turns up and asks if we have an outside tap. Hmmm. So he's going to have to fill his buckets in the bathroom sink upstairs somehow.

Stick a hose on the sink tap and put it out the window!

Has anyone bought double glazing recently? How much did that cost you?
Ditto Solar panels.
Stupid internet won't actually return anything useful on the subjects without creating an account/inviting someone round for a quote. It's like there's a scheme to avoid pricing transparency or something.

It's like there's a scheme to avoid pricing transparency or something. About to get 8 times 375w panels and a 4.6kw battery, £7,145 all in including scaffolding etc. South London. Windows, well that depends what type. Wooden sash window will start at like £1100 for total cost, but heavily dependent on size and usually doing more will get some scale economies. Also changing frames might be good idea, add some more and need for scaffolding.

OMFG, after 30 odd years of faffing about/struggling with a B&Q mains drill I've finally got an SDS, this is life changing. I really don't know why I didn't get one about 15 years ago. The expression 'knife through butter' could not be more apt.

Oh yes. I used to skimp on tools because “I’d only use them once a year” and crap like that. No more. Just the other day I was doing some light fixing and used three. An SDS is one of man’s greatest inventions.

Had to google what that is. A hammer drill. They are fun!
Something I’ve really noticed on trips back home from the states, is the utterly pathetic state of tools available to consumers at big box stores. It’s chronic. I’m not sure how anyone in the UK does DIY beyond IKEA.

I’ve had the same little Bosch powered screwdriver that doesn’t have a replaceable battery for about ten years, and a cheap Bosch cordless drill alongside it, on its second battery.
Replaced them last month with a DeWalt 790 combi and matching impact driver and a pair of decent batteries. Everything in the world is better now. The driver in particular is ridiculous. The Bosch had reached the point where even on a fresh charge it was barely quicker than using a regular screwdriver. The new one sinks a 12cm long screw quicker than I can blink.

After you get an impact driver and discover it’s possible to sink screws into wood without pre drilling, life changes
It’s a bit like getting a power washer. Once you finish the job you bought it for you feverishly look around you for other things to use it on

Stop getting so windy. Bloody double gate managed get the bolt undone whilst still being locked.. and the only way I could fix it was by taking off the bolt/lock as the previous owner lost the key. We never use it as it's a back alley that potentially a car could fit down. I don't think they have put this gate in concrete as it's a wobbly as fuck... I wish people would stop cutting corners and just get a proper job done because it saves them a few quid. Cunt.

There's always something in a house. Now the radiators are getting hot when there's hot water on. Combi was installed in 2020 so had to phone Baxi to get someone out under warranty. I assume there's no reason not to use it until then..

Ultra Frequency High device surely.
So we have a guy who is plastering our front perimeter walls at the moment, looks good and all but he is out there today plugging away and we have the mother of all storms bearing down on us tonight. My worry is, and to be fair I know little about outdoor plasters, wouldn't 100ml of rain being dumped in an hour possibly wash it off?

It seems unlikely that it will be completely dry before the rain comes. It usually takes a few days (3?) before plaster is fully dry.
It won't be washed away necessary, but it'll probably get moisture into it and won't last very long.

Yeah that is my worry. I often wonder if it's because people are either oblivious to the weather forecast or they just generally don't give much of a shit. Probably both but at the same time knowing they'll get repeat business with the repair work.

Well one way or another he is, a patch of rain is about to hit so maybe that'll send him home and it'll get a chance to dry a bit before the storm tonight. Only has to hold up for a year or two.

Maybe (being as he's being paid to do it) he knows better than me - lord alone knows, I'm not a plasterer by any means) he knows what he's doing.. I do know that my fuckwit of a former neighbour tried to redo the plaster on his house before he had viewings, in the rain. Painted it and everything. By the time they had people round to look, it'd all slid off. But like I say, I'm not an expert and he was a fuckwit.

He seems to know what he's doing, bit of an all rounder. Climbs 20 metre palm trees on his own to prune them and not killed himself yet and for the most part reliable. It looks great so not too bothered but yeah, I'm no plasterer so can't say either.
I at the very least would of used it as the perfect excuse to take the day off.
