Any chance this will bring down the price of a standard PS5? Seeing as they increased the price of the ps5 last year, recently increased the controller price and massively increased the Japanese pricing I'm going to go crazy and say...no. |

Yeah I agree. Also with Pro being so vastly more expensive it creates clearly tiered products. It's not like maintaining a price point like consoles used to do which reduced the costs of older models.
Unless there is bonkers uptake with Pro and the OG model doesn't shift. But I can't see that happening immediately.

It’s a very bold strategy to double the price of your console pretty much entirely on the premise that it will make old games look a bit nicer.

I remember buying my 3080 to coincide with the release of Cyberpunk. That really looked way beyond anything else at the time. But I can't remember the game previous to that which felt like a graphical leap forward? And equally I'm not sure what the next graphical leap forward will be... Can't imagine it'll be GTA6 and beyond that I'm not sure what quadruple-A games are coming out soon.

They really needed to have at least a ‘here’s bloodborne remastered running at 4K120 with ray tracing on full tilt’ to go along with it because completely in isolation this is genuinely one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen.

That price has overshadowed everything they had to say but yeah, if you're going to show off an insanely expensive console with some ps4 games, launch ps5 games and a reflection of a car on another car then I can totally see why people weren't all cheering for it.

I'm amazed Sony's marketing department signed off on targeted selling points such as a few pixels extra on something in the background in Ratchet & Clank, and the straight-faced cut of Mark Cerny talking about improved hair rendering.

But think of the more detailed crowd in Ratchet & Clank!
The only really noticeable difference was the raytraced reflections in GT7 and if you're looking at them during a race please let me drive against you so you can see your reflection in my car's boot as I pass you.
It was a very poor way of selling a fucking expensive console, Mark Cerny is great technically but as a sales pitch with that price tag drop, good fucking luck.

The thing is I'm really interested in the tech behind it and am looking forward to seeing what improvements dev can make especially in something like Alan Wake 2 but 800 quid it's just academic to me. |

I think at a similar price you'd get those people as well as push a fair few people myself included into a possibility especially as the PS4Pro was an 80/20 split but here you're turning off the enthusiasts. It's bizarre that it has a 2TB SSD wasn't thrown in as a bit of a sweetener but it wasn't.

You guys are weird. If I was a PS man I'd buy this. And the equivalent PC is still going to be lot more and come with the shit PC experience. If this is ending you get fidelity modes with current performance mode performance, I guess you wouldn't see that in a demo, really.
But this price is also why MS said they wouldn't do a series x pro version, as they weren't expecting the same price / performance increase as they could achieve for the Xbox one x.
But anyways the inevitable digital foundry assessment is still one to watch!

I’m totally weird for not gushing about spending £800 on a console that will give me two extra pixels on the horizon in Ghost of Tsushima that came out a billion years ago and I’ve already played on two consoles. Weird. I mean. It’s a no brainer.

I think the main issue is... it's a console. Consoles come with certain preconceived ideas (based largely on past experience) and the price tag is one of them. Even for a 'Pro' model we have experience of them being launched at sensible prices compared to the base machine. This is clearly not the case with the PS5 Pro, which adds on some nice bits, but takes out fundamentals such as a stand and a disc drive. The worry also is that it might set a precedent for future consoles.

It might help if they had some upcoming games in the works that they could show off. "Look at these upcoming games planned for next year and beyond on PS5 with the all new 4k 60fps update only the Pro can offer". But other than say Death Stranding 2 or Wolverine, we don't really know what else is coming. Instead they showed off a game I beat 4 years ago and never want to play again even if the foliage hanging on the side of a building does look more crisper than before.
