Did nobody else notice it comes with a 2tb drive though?!
It totally solves the problem of not being able to upgrade the storage on the base PS5. £700 please.

At the end of the day all the games are coming out on PS5, there will be nothing truly revolutionary as it's the same cpu, the base console will always be the set experience. Games look really fucking good already it just depends if you think 800 quid is worth it to see some cleaner looking pixels as the game will still be the same and then the ps6 will be out soon after.

I mean, why else do 4080s exist? That's like a thousand quid just for the GPU to play the same games.

£700, £800 if you want to play discs, for an 'improved' console for a generation that's barely got going four years in? Pfffft hahahahahahaha

Doesn't come with a disk drive though, which I would have to buy separately because I have quite a few games on bluray.

Pro : 2TB SSD, saves £100ish on expanding the storage yourself! Con : no disc drive so you'll have to pay £100ish if you want one!
A perfect definition of the meaning of the phrase, "what you lose on the swings, you gain on the roundabouts."

Too much to read back through, but I’m entirely unsurprised by that price. I would have put money on £700. This just confirms to me that the next generation of consoles is another 4 - 5 years away. We’re only now coming up to the halfway point.
Microsoft has no pro console. Both Sony and Microsoft raised their base hardware prices. Nintendo held their price and have pushed back their successor at least 2 years (back when they announced the Mario Kart DLC).
This console is for the richest users and little else. Until it’s sub-£300, they surely can’t afford a next gen.

They could of at least had the decency to announce Bloodbourne Remastered 60fps 4k as an exclusive for it.

It might help if they had some upcoming games in the works that they could show off. "Look at these upcoming games planned for next year and beyond on PS5 with the all new 4k 60fps update only the Pro can offer"... Had they done such a thing could probably alienate their current install base with thoughts such as "we made you the market leaders and you treat us as plebs". Thin ice to tread, IMHO.
Another thing that occurred to me: given that any new console generation is supposed to be significantly better than the last, we can assume that the PS6 -whenever it's coming out- should offer more power than this, right, but at what price? Sure, technology moves along and prices fall as more people adopt it, but did Sony just set a new premium base price for its consoles?
In the past, improved manufacturing processes would allow console prices to drop over time, with smaller forms been adopted and reduced costs passed on to the consumer. But both PS5 and Xbox Series X have not enjoyed this (one may argue the PS5 price has risen at some territories). Could it be that Sony (and MS, should they pull it out) is eyeing up the lucrative premium smartphone market audience?

A 4080 exists to make people say "fuck that, I'll just spend a bit more and get a 4090" (I'm part of the problem). They overpriced that card and it rightfully stayed sat on the shelves. A PC as good as the PS5 Pro likely could be built for £900-1000. It's more, but you also get more for that money. At the start of this gen, I wouldn't recommend anyone to build a PC if they wanted to get into gaming, as either of the PS5, or the Xbox Series X or S was a much better purchase for the price. If they were thinking of a PS5 Pro at that price though, I would suggest they just get a PC.

This is nuts pricing, they say it will give around a 45% increase and for that they're charging an 80% premium? Umm, no. I think I'll just skip the PS5 gen altogether.

Nintendo literally rubbing their hands together right now. They literally just have to drop a two-minute video next week saying "Switch 2 at so-and-so date, £350" and they're probably getting sales on that alone "Switch 2 : Half the cost, Twice the fun"

PS4 Pro was mint, launched at a fairly reasonable £399, offered a big boost to your PS4 games and played your 4K blu rays on your new 4K TV. The standard PS4 received a big price drop at the same time, too.
This, however, is massively shit.

PS4 Pro was at the same price of a launch PS4, £349.99 or if you're as lucky as I was £299.99 which was the price of the regular PS4 at the time but Tesco Direct put the wrong price on it very briefly! Tesco Direct doesn't exist any more so no chance of that happening again unfortunately.
There was no UHD drive though, it was still a regular BR one, it could stream 4K movies but not play the discs.

I don't understand why everyone is stuck on the price. £700 is fine, considering plenty of people are more than willing to spend around £1k on a phone every few years, or a graphics card. The market is there.
The real problem is software support. If the Pro had been the standard PS5 hardware config day 1, developers would've been able to develop optimised software to match over the last 4 years, and we wouldn't already be regressing to 30fps for more taxing games for yet another console generation.
Only a handful of games have been announced to be taking advantage of the Pro hardware. It's simply too late.

Ign have a poll on one of their articles.
It's way too expensive 74.2% It's a little too expensive 18.4% Sounds about right 4.9% I thought it would cost a bit more 0.3% I thought it would be way more 0.4%
Thank you 35,217 voters
If almost 93 percent of people think it's overpriced then you have a problem.

For this big price increase it should be a big spec bump over a standard PS5. For this slight spec bump it should be priced slightly more than a standard PS5.
They've got this badly wrong IMO.

I'd add that it's idiots who spend a grand on their phone.

People paying a grand for a phone are most probably doing it via a contract anyway so they don't feel like they're spending a grand on it as they'll be paying it off over at least a year or two.

If you want gaming PC levels of performance you have to expect gaming PC levels of pricing... not that the Pro comes close on either front.
Regardless, my main point was there are bigger issues than price. If we're ever to have a console generation that comes close to PC levels of performance, and with decent longevity, it must be underpinned by more capable hardware from the get go.

Sat here looking at my PS5, wondering how I could have it horizontally and still fit in with my setup - and thinking how fucking cheeky it is for Sony to not be bundling the vertical stand.
a) Your console is huge and unsightly mate. b) This is your "Pro" machine at £700, yet you do bundle one with your peon SKU. c) It's literally just a 8cm moulded plastic disk, with a screw. 89p on Temu. d) You'd want me to pay you £25 to buy back said bit of plastic?
Premium edition, (too) high price, it is what it is...but shit like scrimping on a plastic fucking stand feels like such a straight piss take to me.

The ps5 and series x are underpinned by great hardware in an acceptable size form factor at an acceptable price that didn't take the piss. What are you talking about? If the Pro specs would have been day one for the ps5 them you would have been looking at a more expensive system which would have been death for Sony.

Although, on the other hand, nobody is putting a gun to your head to buy a top of the line galaxy fold when a huawei will do just fine so I suppose it does kind of track.
