I still think the Dualsense is the worst 1st party controller since dual sticks were standard. Really can’t understand how anyone manages to play for more than an hour on the thing. Lack of third party options is a real shame.

Really? Personally thought the DualShock 4 was pretty good and the Dualsense is much the same, but an improvement in most ways.
Playstation hasn't really mixed it's controller up drastically since the original DualShock, but, to me, it is very much a case of "if it ain't broke...".
Edit - also, "since dual sticks were standard" would include the original Xbox controller. I never used it myself, but weren't those notoriously terrible?

I agree. I really didn't get on with the xbox layout, probably because I was so used to a PS controller.

The correct controller layout is of course the Wii U Pro controller

I’ve never liked the stick position on the PS controllers but didn’t find them particularly uncomfortable before. Something has really changed on the dualsense though, it makes my hands hurt until they go tingly and then numb. It just doesn’t sit in a natural position for hands. Doesn’t make any sense to me. All I want is to be able to use my Xbox controller but that’s never gonna happen.

I'd say the Xbox controller is great as a controller can be. However the Dualsense is the best controller Sony has made for all its consoles.

I really like the DualSense, although I only have the DualShock 4 to which I can really compare it.
By contrast, I've never so much as held an Xbox controller in my life - enough people swear by them for me to believe that they're good, but I dread to think how I'd cope with the thumbsticks being in different positions!

DualSense is pretty much perfect for me, has a bit more solidity than the DS4, which was orders of magnitude better than the DS3 which was not good.

I think it’s a good pad but I’m not exactly thrilled with something that gets used and abused so much being so expensive.
The Xbox Series pad is fine day to day but the dpad is absolute shite. I can’t hit diagonals on it at all which rules it out for fighting games. Which is a shame as I still use a wired 360 pad on the PC and it is still great after all these years.

I've only used friends' Xbox controllers in the past (long time ago now) and never got on well with them. To be fair though, I only would have used them briefly, so maybe just hadn't acclimatised to them. I was also put off them by Microsoft all but forcing their use on PC. I stubbornly refused to cave and always used a Logitech controller on PC, before getting a PS4 and getting an extra controller that I could use on PC. Then the PS5 bundle I got came with an extra controller.
Only non-dualshock layout controller I've used for any extended time since two sticks became standard was the Wii U pro controller. To be fair, I got used to that. It wasn't a great controller, but it was fine. For the Switch, I use an 8bitdo, as I found the Switch pro controller had a terrible d-pad. Tried it with Tetris 99 and got a lot of ghost inputs.
I did have a quick glance to see if you can get third party PS5 controllers with an Xbox layout. There are a few, but all seems to be really expensive.
Edit - and definitely agree with Bongo about the cost. Pricing for controllers now in general is insane.

DualSense is good as long as you change the original coil springs on the triggers. It sounds like I'm being so uber teardown nerd here, but mine broke, and it was fairly easy to replace and fix. No problems since.
I like the Xbox controller but the buttons are way too clicky.
If I was going to pick one, it would be the Switch Pro.

Agree that the dpad is like cutting yourself with knife if you're using it for anything other than as a way of selecting things. Just bring in the Mega Drive or Saturn dpad to your joy pads you morons.

Now they are so expensive, they really should be obliged to make them easier to maintain. I’m sure most faults aren’t mechanical, just that the users are dirty bastards so the sticks should at least be easier to get to.
I could probably have fixed mine but I just thought ‘fuck that’ after watching a tear down video.

It felt like I was using a drill, and the triggers kept clicking like crazy. I've learnt now to turn it all the way down for any racing game. Might be able to fix it yourself? could be something has fallen in-between the gap. Get a bit of compressed air in.

I've always figured the reason the PS Controller sticks are where they are is because the pad originally didn't have any sticks. They put the dpad exactly where your thumb naturally rests when gripping the controller - so the stick had to go somewhere less natural. Made sense too, because it was a long while before analogue became the normal input. But it made sense to move that left analogue up once it became the dominant input.
Not sure what changed on the dualsense to make it less comfy for some though. The shape has changed a bit and it's a little bigger overall. The edges are a bit more rounded and less steep, and I think maybe it's more of a stretch to reach the analogue stick now?

I had to replace the sticks on my 8bitdo a little while ago and it was surprisingly straightforward for someone as inept at these sort of things as me. Hardest part was getting to the clips that holds it altogether, and it is a little more dented than it was before.
The 8bitdo feels a bit flimsier than the DualSense though and I imagine they make it much harder to repair to get people to just buy a replacement.

I could probably have fixed mine but I just thought ‘fuck that’ after watching a tear down video. It's honestly not too bad imo, just a little fiddly. One of mine had pretty bad drift recently and was able to sort it without needing to replace any parts (I did initially make it worse on the first teardown though, lol)

I don't remember drift being an issue back in the day. I'm very intrigued as to why it's becoming so prevalent. Like the Elite Xbox joypads which by all accounts seem to be made from balsa wood but they want an eye watering amount of money for them.

Stick placement on the PS controllers still gives me grief, but mostly I cannot stand the non-concave top finish.

The dualsense somehow manages to feel weighty yet also like it’s held together by tape. The battery is shit too. I charge the Xbox pad about once every couple of weeks or so and the dualsense after every couple of uses. It’s toss.

Yes the Dualsense battery is terrible. Moreso if you have headphones plugged in which I commonly do. For the 70 quid asking price it is a joke.

Yeah, the most irritating thing is that I’m running two pads because of the shitty battery life* so if the other one goes that’s another sixty quid whereas at least with the Xbox pad I just need a couple of cheap AA packs.
*yes, I do also have a power brick that can charge them

The battery on the Switch pro controller is incredible. I swear I never have to charge the thing, just runs on Nintendo magic. Shame the triggers are poor.

Like the Elite Xbox joypads which by all accounts seem to be made from balsa wood but they want an eye watering amount of money for them. N64 had stick issues to the point where original N64 controllers with a good stick are like golddust. But I don't think that was drift so much as the springs etc just dying from overuse.
I do remember my 360 pads also developing a few dud sticks over the years due to drift though.
Both N64 and PS2 actually had neat hardware level features built into their pads where they could self-recalibrate - see an example of the PS2 feature here:
I assume that feature is just gone now, and were I cynic (I am) I would suggest it's because they know that they can just charge you for a new controller instead and make more money.

I had to replace a 2 year old ps5 controller due to drift on the right stick.
Camera would just rotate in fast circles constantly. Added an extra dimension of difficulty to Elden Ring.
Never had that on any Ps3 or PS4 controllers which i used extensively and still work to this day!

For me the Dualsense is the best gamepad, followed by Switch Pro and then XB.
Ds is by some way the best in quality, comfort and features imo.

Agree here with everything other than Dualsense lacking asymmetrical sticks. Still feels wrong prioritising the D Pad placement over analogue placement now we are 5 gens into the 3D era.
