I've never played Dragon's Dogma 1. Worth picking up?
YES!
Oh damn. Looks like another two games to add to my ever increasing backlog. I'm also tempted by Ronin. Mainly because ninja garden 1 and 2 are absolutly ingrained in my fond gaming memory.

Dark Arison is currently 5 euro on PSN. That's the one to get, right?

LegendaryApe That's correct - it's the base game plus the DLC.

One thing that I noticed from the Ronin video that pleasantly surprised me was that it actually seems to be running alright. I suspect that'll change later on but Team Ninja must have spent a lot of time manhandling that dreadful graphics engine into doing open world stuff smoothly.

An unpopular opinion, I know, but I never liked the original theme song! Much prefer the remaster in that regard.

Thing is, I still think Ronin will be getting down the line at some point as despite everything, I think the combat will feel great.
I hope you're right, Wunts. Still, this is another area in which I've been put off somewhat by Cowboy's video - it seems Team Ninja have gone down the Final Fantasy XVI route here, with all your melee attacks being mapped to a single button (Square).
Even Stellar Boobs has light attacks (Square) and heavy attacks (Triangle), so you can mix up your approach to combat; if I remember correctly, Ronin uses the Triangle button for parries (which is a whole other can of tuna - why?!).

I've never played Dragon's Dogma 1. Worth picking up? Yeah. Totally. Considering it's always in sales for peanuts as well. It's showing it's age but with the new one around the corner it's the perfect time to see if it clicks. I never finished it but had a hell of a lot of fun in the meantime. The encounters with huge creatures scattering you and your pawns around like a toddler playing with action figures is totally nuts and as I said above, really captures fighting huge beasts in a way that a lot of other video games fail to (ie. I imagine it WOULD be an absoulte clusterfuck of bodies being launched all over the place and all of you taking turns to try and climb the thing and ram a sword into it's brain).

Bear in mind I didn't say how far down the line...
Basically I think it will be one to buy when it's super cheap

I'm a bit gutted with the trajectory Team Ninja seem to be taking. Nioh 2 was a fucking masterpiece imo. Then one step down to Wo Long, and now another step down to this. Sad times.

I'm with you there - I loved the combat in Wo Long (more so than the Niohs, to be honest), but everything else about it was a step backwards.
The mission-based structure of those games was a big plus for me, so I was always somewhat put off by Ronin's move to an open-world format; combined with everything we learned yesterday, I reckon it's gonna be 'deep sale' territory for me.

There was Stranger of Paradise inbetween as well, which at least for me felt like a much better 'introduction' to Nioh's style of game than Wo Long.

No reason to not play I guess.

I really wish Team Ninja had a better engine. Yeah. It lets them down. They got away with it in previous games because of the tight level design and superb art direction. Harder to do in an open world unless your engine is up to snuff and theirs is most certainly not. Even then (and I do like it so not just slagging it off), Wo Long had a few levels that looked really shonky.

It was most egregious in Wild Hearts. Surely they must have made some money to sort their shit out in that regard.

Call me Barry "Glass Half-empty" Sadface, but I don't think it will even take too long before it goes on sale. Anyone that is remotely interested in this style of game I imagine will be going for Dragon's Dogma over this. As a PS5 exclusive, I don't think it's doing the console any favours.
Anyway. It's like I'm piling on it. I'm not. Just disappointed given my recent gaming experiences with the same dev.

The 4 player co-op design probably doesn’t help with making a graphically stunning open world either.

I think something changed with the Tecmo Koei engine when they updated it for Dynasty Warriors 9, which still doesn't run acceptably on anything. It was never great but Nioh 1 for example was pretty easy to run, as was DOA5. Then they changed the engine and you get stuff like DOA6 which runs much worse on the same hardware while not looking much better, Stranger of Paradise in its incredibly low resolution glory on consoles and Wo Long which has never run well on PC. And don't get me started on how badly Atelier games run now!
When so many different teams within the company struggle so much with the engine, it's clear what's at fault, especially when that includes Team Ninja who historically have been pretty good at pushing technical limits.

Have you seen the Ronin footage Jambo? Not kidding, it looks horrendous in places. I've only seen the trailers and think the last State of Play, it looked a bit ropey as the character was on a glider and things were popping in. The Yakuza Devs could definitely teach them a thing or two.

He's updated his opinion slightly in the comments:
Graphically it looks quite poor. As a PS5 exclusive that's not good. I'll definitely getting it in a sale though. It looks quite fun.

I'm still baffled as to how this is a PS5 exclusive.

Because Sony paid for it and they tend to provide a lot of ancillary benefits as publisher. If it’s like Nioh 2 then they’re also paying for a lot of localisation and QA as well, they support way more languages.
If you look at the credits for Nioh 2 there’s a load of Sony employees handling stuff like that. In their case it really does seem like it’s beneficial for the game overall.

It's just a reminder how underwhelming this generation has been so far tbh. I'm still looking for something that gives me the Demon's Souls remake "wow" factor.

Ok, but I don't mean that. I mean that it doesn't have the prestige of what I would imagine a console exclusive to be. Moreso a Playstation one.

That was such a strong start too, along with Returnal a few months later. Ratchet and Clank looks great but the game does nothing for me. Spiderman, Kena (greatest game of all time) and Final Fantasy 7 are impressive too, but that's a short list. I love my PS5, and I've probably never had access to so many great games overall, but I do miss the more regular bangers.
