I think PS London were working on GaaS stuff, so it might be the semi covid related knock on of "we saw that GaaS games were popular a while back so we assumed that gamers have infinite amounts of time to spend on any number of games that have to be treated like a second job, and further assumed that all GaaS games would be big hits and massive money spinners, and only just realised it's actually a brutal space with near guaranteed failure so even though we've spent millions on that already we're cutting our losses"

A lot of these studio execs that made these ridiculous projections were really really hoping the pandemic would last longer than it has. Now it's biting them. Sorry, not them, the people working for them. They can't possibly go without that new car.

I did sound like my dad the other day. My daughter does her GCSEs this year and she mentioned she might like to do the game design course at the local college. ‘You must be crazy’ left my lips before I even had chance to think.

We've made a huge mistake.

If she does want to be loosely connected with the industry consider HW IP design. It pays very well with few skilled people being in high demand from competing companies. Yeah my place had redundancies recently but anyone half decent walked straight into Arm, AMD etc. but with fat redundancy cheques as a bonus.

So I've just seen that the Twisted Metal reboot has been one of those cancelled games after all these layoffs.

Obviously this is not the case anymore.

Buying Bungie looked like a mistake at the time and it's got worse since.
London Studio being closed down completely is very sad news, they produced some great stuff over the years (plus a fuckton of SingStar titles). I've been wanting a modern Getaway for ages as I really enjoyed the originals and that's certainly never going to happen. It sort of being resurrected for VR was fun in Blood & Truth and that was crying out for a PSVR2 remake/sequel that could handle some decent controllers!
Good luck to everyone in finding alternative employment.

After the positive comments in here I ordered a PS Portal. Tried the Remote Play app for the first time to see what the results might look like and it actually seems pretty decent to me so hopefully be a worthwhile purchase.
Also I never get the TV anyway so should get some use out of it!
Seems expensive for what it is though but I'm paying for it by flogging off the old Switch.

I disagree, buying jungle was a great move but they need to make something that isn't destiny 2. The game has done well to last as long as it has but the model is tired.
The gameplay in destiny is still brilliant.

@frog well they're making Marathon which is looking like it'll be a bit of a flop. (I'd momentarily forgotten it even existed) I'm sure D2 will have a big spike in player numbers with the expansion as usual, but doubt it'll hit the previous highs. I might dip in to D3 if it arrives as F2P, but my days of being a mega ultimate edition expansion preorder fanboi are long gone.

I’ve loved both Destiny games but they really need to solve the problem of inaccessibility to both new players and returning ones. Every time I try and get back into it I’m overwhelmed by systems and currencies and it puts me off.
I know it’s by nature a slightly more complex beast than things like Fall Guys or Fornight, but the strength of those is how easy they are to jump back into. Every now and then I fancy a blast on Destiny but I always end up uninstalling again because it’s just too much.

They just need to port destiny's gunplay into a FPS game which isn't a life replacement. There is a market waiting for it but they need to come in with anti cheat as good as valorant from the get go.
In one of skillups expansion reviews he said destiny feels good to play and he is right. Few shooters feel as good as destiny to play but it's need to try and keep people constantly on it works to it's detriment.

I'm trying to think of the games the London studio have released. Quite niche titles, no big hitters for a while? Still shit though to close an entire studio.

Haven't played Destiny 2 since it came out. Certainly one of the best feeling shooters around but yeh everything around levelling up and all the different currencies etc makes it a tough sell to come back too. Even with the sunsetting guns and gear and even content. Isn't it the case that all the campaign stuff that came with the original Destiny 2 is now no longer available to play? How's a new player meant to keep up with the story?

While things like Apex Legends and Destiny are revenue drivers, if you look at the revenues from last year things like Baldurs Gate, Zelda, RE4, Elden Ring, Cyberpunk etc all did extremely well also. I think the idea that big single player narrative based games aren’t as profitable is being dispelled. And actually the amount of GaaS titles that are failing might mean everyone stops trying to make them as much.

If they did a Halo style single player with multiplayer as good as the early trilogy it would sell loads.

I had my time with destiny and it was great but I can't commit that time anymore. Would love it if they did this.

I did try to get back into Destiny 2 as it is a very accomplished shooter but it just seemed a bit of a incoherent mess and not clear as to the story or progression. I get annoyed when you feel completely left out of a game because you are not playing it consistently every single week.

Yeah, I mentioned this to my colleagues as well as we always take notice of other redundancies. I said it was particularly galling to see people sharing photos of him a few days ago where he's all smirking when he knows he's about to put them all out of a fucking job. Yeah really sticks the knife in that does. My mate said he'd know more by about half 4 apparently. He's not on the game dev department. So seems his job is safe. Looks like it's the US that has been hit the most.

Circle World starring Maestro Boss.

Circle World starring Maestro Boss. I'd buy it. There's a balance between cranking out content for a title to keep an established player base engaged, and creating an accessible title for newcomers. Europa Universlis IV, which is playable as a single player stategy, now exists as a subscription model because so many DLCs have been released over the years that it would just be prohibitively expensive to buy the full package. Also imho the Civ series has got increasingly complicated and granular with it's rules over multiple releases you really have to be a die hard fan to be bothered to learn how to play the recent version. So it's not just multiplayer games thisncan affect. I'd love there to be an accessible Density that I can jump back in to cos I loved those games on release. I'm guessing though that I'm just not the target audience, because filthy caduals like me are notexploitable for an ongoing income stream, and am more likely to just wander off for the next shiny shiny. There must be a point where attrition in the player bases and a steep barrier to entry establishes a decline for a title. I have no idea where that would be, but just because I don't like it doesn't mean it's not making money.

I always drift back to Destiny purely because the moment to moment gameplay is some of the best I've ever experienced in an FPS. The combat is simply phenomenal. it's all the other shit that drives me away after time.

There is a golden period of destiny between installing it again and trying to work out what the fuck is going on and it eventually starting to feel like a job that is almost unmatched.
It is quite amazing how quickly I fall off it, though. The minute I start rubbing up against its tendency to come at me with a begging bowl I'm pretty much done.

Agree about Destiny, I’ve installed it a number of times and really enjoy the gameplay but uninstall as It always feels like starting a box set at series 5 with no access to what went on before .

Not only that but you bought "season 3" and they've decided they won't let you "watch" it.
Once they started vaulting stuff is when I gave up giving them any money.

I can't find stock anywhere (except StockX and that's £60 over the odds).

Similar situation here when I tried to buy one and no stock available - it came back in stock on the PlayStation store before disappearing so worth checking there. I created a stock alert (stockchecker.co.uk) and it popped up on Amazon a day later so I ordered from there. Unsure if I was lucky or if there is intermittent stock rolling out as I see it's not available again now. I didn't even realise these things were even that popular enough to create a shortage.
