Maybe it's the same dirty pervert developer from Nier Automata? That was obscene.

I never thought that Nier: Automata was any more or less egregious than many other Japanese games when it comes to hyper-sexualised female characters, personally.

I'm not suggesting it was accidental
I just don't think it's any worse than, say, Bayonetta fellating a lollipop, or Quiet frolicking in the rain, or any one of two dozen other examples in which female characters are treated in similar fashion, is all.

Thought that was good overall. Stellar Blade is not for me in terms of style and, fuck me, the tit’s n sticky out arse stuff is old now- games really look like the immature basement dwelling nephew of film and I wish we’d get past it. Although I agree that stuff like that comes across as immature, I would also say that it isn't exclusive to games. I would also expect to see that sort of thing (and worse) in animé, so I would put it more down to Japanese culture than video game culture.

JonFEYoko Taro owning it, I guess? As much as I love Kojima, I found his indignant attempt at justifying Quiet's wardrobe choices to be pretty lame. May as well go the whole hog if you're going to sexualise your female characters to that sort of extent

Ulythium Agreed! I really don't have any problem with sexualised characters (that is unless the missus walks into the room unexpectedly), especially in a medium where you are interactively killing hordes of enemies in sometimes very grotesque ways; to be prude when it comes to digital nudity but be OK with digital violence is kind of hypocritical to me
That said, I *do* wish age restrictions were actually been followed for both nudity and violence, as they serve a purpose, but reality says otherwise...

I think Capcom did the right thing in toning down the sexualisation of their characters. Although Lady Dimitrescu gives me death by snu snu vibes.

But that’s the thing- characters can still have sex appeal, it can just be more nuanced that a Super Elite Soldier In Heels And Tit Tape. I agree, the misogyny is a Japanese culture issue and I’m sure it sells, it just makes games look so juvenile to the outside.

Because I'm a pedantic twat I will point out the over the top fanservice nonsense in Stellar Blade is actually Korean, not Japanese. Not that it makes any real difference, both countries have a similar problem.

Nier Automata is a decent bit more sexualised than your average "Let's put our fighters in skimpy outfits" game (that one achievement, being able to blow the androids' clothes off when self-destructing, A2 technically being almost naked - most of what looks like clothes is actually her android frame being exposed, and it's not really played up for fanservice either) but it's far from the most egregious (even less so if we don't limit it to games). Heck, I'd argue it's not even the most sexualised in its own series. I'd give that title to Kainé wearing what amounts to lingerie and bandages all the time (she has her backstory reasons, but still...)

I'm not for a nanosecond denying that Nier is a hyper-sexualised series - I just don't get why Automata comes up (fnaar!) first every time the subject is raised. Team Ninja has an entire section on its Wikipedia page devoted to its depiction of female characters, under the heading 'Controversies', but nowadays we gaming nerds prefer to berate them for their last-gen graphics

Well, if those skimpy-ass outfits were rendered in perfect cutting edge high-res HD, maybe we would be too... ahem, distracted to complain about them

We did get remasters of PS360era remasters sold back to us though. And some PS4 remasters too!

What a complete nothing generation. I'm not sure that is entirely fair. We at least are getting more stable 60fps and good looking games at the same time. Covid though really did put a damper on the generation in the first 2 years of launch. I also don't think there is going to be huge generational leaps between consoles ever again. Most of that is just the amount of time to create super, highly detailed characters, worlds and gameplay.

It's more that there's barely been any amazing games that are for this gen only.
Look at the PS4 - Bloodborne, Last of Us 2, Persona 5, God of War, RDR2, Witcher 3 etc.
Where are the equivalents for this gen? The only ones on my list are Street Fighter 6, Forza Horizon 5 and Baldur's Gate 3.

Shame as there was a lot of promise early on but COVID seemingly fucked things quite a bit.
The most disappointing part of this gen on the PS side is the almost complete non-use of the really creative Dualsense features. The potential of Astro's Playroom never really got matched again. A few games had the odd cool gimmick section but nothing anywhere as near transformative as Astro was.

That was always going to happen sadly. And Astro set the bar too high.
