The controller thing is basically a WII U gamepad. It's an odd thing to put out in 2023 particularly when using your phone is already a thing.

I’ve been trying to say something wry and pithy about it in comparison to the last mini-console they released but I can’t even remember its name

The Vita TV? I'm still not sure who that thing was aimed at.
The Wii U gamepad was at least a bit versatile, as it acted as a second screen in some games. This thing is just a small tablet with a couple of controllers attached. It's just a more expensive version of the controllers you can already get for your phone, with an extra screen thrown in which will probably be pretty low quality in comparison to my phone.

Ordered that WD-Black SSD. Going to pick up a PS5 from Game tomorrow. Just need to decide which bundle to get. I think the God of War Ragnarok bundle is still the main “official” one from Sony (until Final Fantasy XVI) - and certainly a very good choice. It is a digital copy though, so you can’t trade it in later. I realise GAME will probably do their own bundles so you might get some decent savings if they have old stock to shift! Happy shopping!

Thats the one. Everyone was excited then it came gimped. But, speaking of phones, surely a razer kishi type implementation would have made more sense? Youre already pretty much there with remote play, just clip some joypads on.

The Backbone-One exists, so you can do that. This is them just making a dedicated unit to do the job.

Well, yes, and so does the razer as I literally just said. My point, really, is that they probably dont need to, surely? Just release something official that looks like a PS5 pad and try to improve the remote play experience.

Sorry, I was referring to the Backbone-one Playstation edition, which is officially licensed. But yeah, they could have just dropped a proper Dual Sense-shaped version.
Project Q is a 8 inch screen, bigger than the OLED Switch, so seems to be positioning itself as more premium but I guess we'll find out more later in terms of how well it works.

I think Im slightly fixating on it because e-waste has become a bit of a pet peeve of mine and this seems completely pointless when everyone has a phone in their pockets and remote play exists.

I got that vita tv thing and it was proper wank, the lag made games unplayable and set it up was a faff. They don't have the best track record with these things either, they basically pretended that TV thing didn't exist and never gave it any software updates to improve it.

Going for the God of War, Resident Evil 4 remake with free Forespoken & Saint’s Row.
Packed up my PS4 Pro years ago. Getting excited now. Main reason I’m going for it is GT7 in VR (which I’ll get on a few months time). Also Street Fighter 6. Yeah, I could get it on Series X but I’ve got my Street Fighter 5 Mad Catz fight stick ready to go.
If you’ve got PS4 games on digital and they have been given a PS5 makeover. is there some indication of this?

Yeah, will give you an option of what version you'd like to download.
Play Returnal and Astroboy.

I think push square maintain a list. It also says ps4/ps5 in the store and will ask you which version you want to download when you reinstall it.

Thinking about the Showcase I was surprised by the absolute lack of anything PSVR2 wise. Essentially no first party stuff being shown off in that area, that's not really a great look for your audience who want to know Sony are committed to this thing I've spent over half a grand on.

Yeah, but also I've spent all morning playing Beat Saber. I still have enough to play, and a few things from last night are on my wishlist, but certainly from autumn onwards I'll be looking for new stuff to be announced.

I was saying that to the boy as we watched it. There was no "system seller" there for PSVR2 as far as I was concerned. I still don't feel as though there is one and until then I'm happy that I don't have it. Sure, there's stuff out that would be cool on it, if I had one already, but there's nothing there that screams BUY A PSVR2.

I was holding out for something Bloodborne related anyway. I should stop getting my hopes up. Every fucking time.
Although I was amused by MS acknowledging that most of the stuff shown will also be out for Xbox. Thought they would lean into the exclusives a bit more. Death Stranding 2, Silent Hill 2, other shit.
Spiderman did look nice however. The boy absolutely loved that and he said it's a day one for him. Not something I'm interested in really though.

I wonder if the new announced handheld was why Sony was making such a big fuss over Microsoft's stranglehold on game streaming? Like anyone else really gave a shit.

I wasn't really blown away by most of the stuff they had to show. Sorry Sony, but this gets a big shrug from me.
Not really sure who's going to buy that streaming portable either, especially as anyone with a laptop, Razor Kishi/Backbone One, Steamdeck or other portables like the Ayn Odin have been able to stream PS games (poorly) for bloody ages already. If it's 300-odd quid like that Logitech G streaming handheld it'll be utterly dead on arrival.
Save yer money and buy an ASUS ROG Ally/Steamdeck 2 instead.

Ok, that's great and all but it's not a first party game, I didn't see any first party stuff being announced to convince people that Sony will be fully supporting this device. This was supposed to be a showcase for the second phase of PS5's release schedule, people shouldn't have to be waiting until autumn for stuff to be announced. If they can show a CGI trailer god knows how many times then it's logical that they can they do the same for the VR stuff.

There will be stuff announced in summer and TGS, or whatever comes toward the end of year. Maybe not "big" first party VR releases though. I'm not really expecting much in that vein tbh (maybe I bought into it with different expectations?), it's going to be largely supported by 3rd party. There are very few notable big VR titles, from anyone. They need an Alyx, for sure, but Valve has only dropped the one of those too and I don't think it's entirely realistic to expect them to be coming thick and fast. It's not an easy platform to build things for, and it's not setting the world on fire which creates a catch 22 for investment.
I've seen the whole show being picked apart and shit on pretty hard (no lie, I've seen commentary that Sony have now "lost" this year), but I saw about 10 titles of 20(?) that I have interest in so I thought it was decent. Obviously if the games don't tickle you it's a different outcome.
And the new earbuds will be nice for online VR stuff, providing they aren't priced stupidly.

I did actually genuinely get quite hyped for a fair few of the games that were shown so I was quite happy overall. Doesn't really bother me that they weren't all exclusives. I'm just happy they are coming out. There's always stuff on my wishlist that I would have hoped to be shown but it is what it is. Alan Wake 2, Dragon's Dogma 2, the Samurai thing, Immortals, Helldivers, Marathon (although I'm hesitant as still don't really know what it is bar the fact I loved the original games, next Destiny expansion (only because my boy actually shouted with joy at the return of Cayde), Assassin's Creed Mirage (old school AC really appeals right now) and a few other bits and bobs, including Teardown which looks like just the type of thing me and the boy will lose ourselves in and have a great time.

Curious about the technical aspects of the handheld. It could be alright if it had a really good OLED screen, a massive battery, and if it uses wifi direct for low latency.
And I still think they need to drive up to Gaben with wheelbarrow full of money and knives to get HL:Alyx on there. I love that game and it saddens me that so few people got to play it.

I think there was plenty of good games in the Showcase but the lack of first party stuff (other than Spidey being awesome and a couple of other fairly pointless trailers*) made it just feel like a long State of Play than something people have been hoping would reveal just what internal studios have been up to, for example Bend and London Studio haven't released anything since 2019 and even with COVID something must have been showable even if it was for 2024.
*Haven doing PvPvE Watch Dogs and Firewalk showed us more of a hamburger in a spaceship than anything we could really get our teeth into.
Happy to see Helldivers 2 though, it's been a long time since I've defended Super Earth from the alien menace, hopefully the chaotic call in system is just as dangerous and friendly fire is already known to be fully on again so that'll be fun when the shit hits the fan and someone's respawn pod splats another team member mid fight.
