Innit. I happily paid the premium for what will almost certainly be a special, special game and will be smashing Thor's stupid fat face in tonight when it drops. A special, special PS4 game, tho

I played GoW on my PS4 Pro in quality mode to completion then went back in performance mode to mop up trophies and get platinum. I've pre-ordered Ragnarok on PS5 now and it'll run way way better than original and look the business to boot. Add in the controller improvements and gubbins and that makes the game much more than a "PS4" game to me.
This will be the third game I've bought this year. Others being Elden Ring on day one which was tremendous, and with birthday psn vouchers I got Lego Star Wars which was average and a piss poor ps5 port smeared in vaseline during performance mode.
I'm an adult with not much time for gaming so I no longer hammer through every game under sun like I used to. I pick and choose. Ragnarok is definitely one of the "must have" ps5 games for me.

I'm driving around in a bus today with Kratos and son slapped on the side.
Too right I'm gonna pay the zeitgeist premium tax.

It does stick in my craw a bit that the PS4 is clinging on like a winnet and affecting next gen stuff. The GoW PS5 update was pretty significant tho so I'm sure they e done alright with this one for current consoles.

I was led to believe that having to make it run on a significantly less powerful machine didn't make any difference to the final game.
Anyway it was the Ben Stiller advert that sealed it for me.

My mistake was to inavertently do consumer research and watch the DF analysis and, honestly, I can see no justification for the higher price.

I was led to believe that having to make it run on a significantly less powerful machine didn't make any difference to the final game. Its not how it runs so much as how it is. To get parity, you can only have 10 zombies on screen rather than 100, your levels are smaller, there isnt as much in them. It restricts the scope. 30/60fps is kind of academic, the issue, for me, is that it restricts the actual game. And in this instance, it looks basically the same as the first one.

Seems to be about £62.99 most places and £54.99 on PS4. If you're not bothered about the better framerate and higher resolution you could always save the 7 quid and get the PS4 version, I guess.

Im Bobby Digital, so it would be shopto credit to get the price down to about that. Ignore me, Im sure it will be great and everything. I was just really looking forward to it but was actually super disappointed with the footage ive seen so im just down on it in general.

I do get it. I was hoping stupid stuff like crawlspace loading sections would be dead by now and it does make some of the PS5's function redundant.
Fortunately my enjoyment of the first game pretty much overwrites any of the technical misgivings it may have. Frankly if it had launched as a PS4 only game tomorrow I'd still be looking forward to it just as much.

There’s a certain irony in accusing the GoW games of being limited in scale and scope. This gen isn’t about going bigger. The big leaps are over. You’ll get some of that through via loading magic, but it’s more about making everything better. That’s increased performance, which is what we’re seeing across the board, including here. It’d certainly be nice to have even more focus on next gen content but it won’t change game design in the way that some folk seem to think (ed: the crawl space/shimmy through design is one of those things - it’s been addressed by other Sony devs that it’s more about keeping players moving forward, not being able to backtrack than actually needing to create small areas).

Yeah I'm disappointed its being held back a bit by being last gen as well but pretty much every review I've skimmed has said its looks amazing and the scale is a big step up so I'm not too worried. Plus more of the same of one of my favourite games ever is fine by me.

I had a blast on the remastered GoW 3 last night. Apart from the hack and slashiness, it played well and looked decent.
A remastered PS3 game 😲

There’s a certain irony in accusing the GoW games of being limited in scale and scope. Not really. I replayed it recently and the campaign is ten hours of being funnelled into small rooms punctuated by shuffling through tunnels to mask loading times. Im not really seeing whats changed in the last nearly five years. I suppose I was hoping for the kind of leap between dark souls and elden ring.

Yeah it's a rare case of counting on more of the same really. My biggest concern was it being a departure for departures' sake.

I fully expect to be absolutely exasperated by elves, tbh.

Those buzzy little dark elf bastards are what put me off my second attempted playthrough. Little shits!

Spam them with stun arrows and then smash their faces in.

The loading time masking and stuff is annoying but would you really want it to go more openworld? I'd much prefer it to remain a focused combat room kind of thing, I'm absolutely sick of openworld stuff.

I don’t think it has to go full open world to increase the scope from where it is today. And where it is today is 100% a reflection of technical limitations. Whatever the team does next, presumably, will show that - albeit not as a GoW game.
I think the game itself will be excellent. I really enjoyed the first one. But given that it is basically an up-rezzed PS4 game I’m simply in no rush to play it. The sixty odd quid price tag helps reinforce that for me.
I’ll look forward to picking it up in the Easter Sales.

I would, really, yeah. Theres open world and theres open world and I think it would make the story feel a bit more natural to not have to have a man who can punch a boulder into orbit have his progress restricted by a shoulder high ledge.
Im not saying get rid of the combat rooms, thats core GoW, just the bits in between them could be massively improved.

Also if the squeeze-through thing was *just* about preventing backtracking, they'd make it instantaneous.

Aaaaaaaall that said, apparently this is the final part of a two part trilogy, so for consistency and whatnot I can kind of forgive it because it is closing the book.

I still haven't decided if I'll get it. I got £70 worth of PSN credit from Shopto in preparation, but I guess I could just hold on to that. But then as a digital-only peasant I know that I'll probably have to wait a year or so for it to drop no further than £55, based on Ratchet and Clank and other first party games, so it's only a £15 premium to play it when everyone else is.

Reviews mention the level design being improved and the scale of everything being bigger so I'm guessing there have been improvements. I'll let you know how it is. I'll give you until the end of the week before you crack.

For an ageing miserable fuck with far less free time than he used to have, the semi-open world was perfect in structure for me. Just enough secrets, nooks and crannies off the beaten path to keep it interesting, but funnelled you along the main path nicely if that's all you wanted to do.
I'm sure they will do something different with the next chapter like, this is the end of these ones now. Hasn't been a good kart racer in a while.

Should have saved your money on that 7/10 Call of Duty game. That was £55 and I had, and continue to have, a fucking blast with it. It fit the time I had and the fancy I had. GoW just isn't something I feel like playing right now. And without the whizbang of it being a proper next gen game I’m content to wait.

Oooh - question for the folks getting new PS5s for Ragnarok: I'd love to know if your units are silent, like the original batches were? I'm now on the third unit, over several months, each from a different retailer, and all with very audible fan noise from across the room. It's not impossible that I've had bad luck three times, but it doesn't seem likely. A friend was kind enough to bring their OG PS5 over, and it is indeed effectively silent. They were surprised that mine was so loud, so it's not just me being oversensitive.

My OG Digital is pretty quiet. The loudest noise it makes is when its really giving it some, its sat on a wooden surface and the vibrations of the fan resonate through the plinth, other than that, nothing of note, really. Ive never heard it over demanding stuff like Returnal or whatever, for sure.
