My launch disc model is whisper quiet. Only peep I get is when a disc is spinning up once in a while but that's it.

Mine have all been constant regardless of load. Doesn’t get any louder when playing fancy things. It is what it is, and I’m mainly on headphones, but if I can get a silent one I will.

I’m mainly asking the new owners, as they’ll be on the new revisions possibly after the summer batch. I’m crossing my fingers that they sorted it again.

Not helpful I know but my OG one is only ever noisy when it decides to spin up the disc drive. None of that with the Series X.

I'm happily playing through the last game at the moment. I've never been one to play a game and then move straight on to a sequel, so I'll just sit this one out and let you Sony Ponies pay £70 for it. Same, £70 seems to be a psychological barrier for me I will buy it down the line sometime. Football Manager 23 release day today, and its on PC gamepass day 1. Sorry Sony, for the payers

Super stealthy OG model here too, aside from the disc drive. Surprising that they dropped the ball so badly with the newer revisions.

I got mine last year and there's a slight hint of a fan but it's generally quiet. A mate of mine has a new one and he's told me he can barely hear it.

One good thing about my day 1 digital model is silence. Less enamored by Sony and there vice like grip on all digital content. especially with the £ to the $ exchange rate tanking.

Am I the only idiot that think £70 isn't the heinous crime against humanity it's made out to be? I'm far from being a Tony Tonsofcash, but £70 for a game made by a lot of talented people over a long time - considering the hours you get from most games these days - doesn't seem disproportionate to me. Granted I normally only buy one or two releases a year at full price, so perhaps I'm not the best person to judge, but paying a little bit more (considering everything else is fucking well going up anyway) for a luxury hobby related item that I'm going to get a lot of enjoyment from, doesn't stick in my craw the way it seems to with others. As for comparing it to gamepass, well, I suppose that just depends on how you view your hobby. I've subscribed myself for a few years and can't really get over the "I'm renting not owning" thing that constantly goes around in my head. I'm possibly (probably) an outdated traditionalist that likes to buy the games outright mind you.
That's it for my two cents worth. Don't forget to smash that subscribe button etc. Seriously. Break it.

I’ve never heard my ps5 make a noise, but I’ve not really played a ps5 game on it either. Some games with ps5 PATCHES, but no “built for ps5” games.

I’ll gladly report back on the PS5 noise issue - tracking info from PlayStation Direct says my new GOW Ragnarok bundle should be arriving tomorrow!
My sadly departed launch model PS5 was very quiet - just the disk drive made a noise; you had to get pretty close to hear anything else from it. While I’m not expecting PS4 level decibels, I reckon I’ll notice if it’s significantly different.
The new models are meant to be more energy efficient aren’t they? Considering it’s £30 more expensive now, I’d have hoped they’re not cheaping out on cooling parts.

wuntyYou’re not alone - I don’t begrudge £70 for a game as long as it’s genuinely great. The high price just makes me much more selective with what I buy on release. I have a huge backlog of games and I sub to Gamepass Ultimate (and PS+ Essential) so I will never be lacking something to play. This year I’ve bought Horizon Forbidden West and Elden Ring. God of War is on its way. 3 games and that will likely be all I buy in 2022. If GOW lives up to the reviews, I’m pretty confident all three of those games will have been worth their day one asking prices.

Super stealthy OG model here too, aside from the disc drive. Surprising that they dropped the ball so badly with the newer revisions. Does make you wonder if it's because there were lots of complaints/returns for higher temps or something so they upped the fan speed.

My bet would be they went big on the first batch then when they had a good idea of tolerances implemented a cost saving on cooling hardware and whatnot. Maybe they run a bit hotter out of the box, use a shitter fan etc.

Well, for comparison, my boy has a new disc PS5 (I say new, it was bought in May this year) and that too is super quiet.
We do have a fucking freezing house though (old stone building + me being a stingy prick with the heating), which may help.

Day one digital here and it's completely silent on everything I've thrown at it. It's on its side in a glass media shelf. I don't use headphones but have chunky 5.1 speakers so maybe they're drowning out the noise 🤷🏻♂️

Wherever he is I hope Ecosse is finally at peace with his coil whine.

Did user [REDACTED] die of covid after removing his FFP3 mask for the first time in 2 years then? I must have missed that piece of forum history.

My (launch) PS5 does a little grinding noise when I first turn it on. Even without a disc in the drive, so it's not that. But that's it, once it's loaded into the actual dashboard, it's pretty much silent no matter what I'm playing.
There is a chance Phattso just got bad luck each time he's bought one though. I remember having similar luck last gen with my PS4. My original PS4 and the first Pro I had were not only jet engine loud, but had tendencies to overheat. The Pro in particular crashed every time I reached the sewer section at the start of Dragon Quest XI, and Resident Evil 2 was so loud that I had to raise the volume on my TV up to 75 just to hear the dialogue. I normally played at 20. Year or two before the PS5 launched though, I traded it in towards a revised Pro and I never heard a peep from it. Luck of the draw with Sony consoles, really.

Mine has very noticeable coil whine. It‘s not the end of the world, but it‘s not pleasant. I am currently playing Mount & Blade, and it hums, squeaks and buzzes in a different frequency on every loading screen , battle, dialogue or menu. The Series X is truly dead silent.

Once again I must remind anyone with a disc PS5 that sounds noisier than they think it should; there's a small hack you can do where you eject a disc via a screw in the top of the drive that could potentially quiet it down massively.
Loads of YouTube videos out there showing you how to do it. Mine has been bang on since I did it going back way over a year.

Also if you have it lying flat make sure the stand thing is properly clicked in and there is no wobble. Mine started whirring a bit refitting it sorted it.
